    Curt better than Pedro?

    Hey fellas,

    Check this out: http://www.foxsports.com/content/view?contentId=1909936

No wonder why Pedro may be upset if he reads this.

SCHILLING WANTS 'TO PITCH BETTER THAN' PEDRO
    BY HOWARD ULMAN
    Associated Press
    Dec 1, 2003 6:54 p.m.
BOSTON (AP) — Curt Schilling wants a good-natured rivalry with the ace of the Boston Red Sox pitching staff, Pedro Martinez.
"I want to pitch better than him, but not because he pitches bad," Schilling said Monday. "I want him to throw a gem, and me to throw a better gem."

There was no announcement about who would be managing them. Oakland bench coach Terry Francona is considered the front-runner, and a decision is expected within a few days. He did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Team president Larry Lucchino referred questions to Charles Steinberg, executive vice president for public affairs. Steinberg did not return calls seeking comment.

Anaheim bench coach Joe Maddon, who was interviewed in person and by telephone, said Monday he last spoke with the Red Sox on Nov. 21.

"They'll probably call me (Tuesday) at some point," Maddon said. "When the Schilling thing happened, that kind of put everything on hold."

Schilling has praised Francona, his manager from 1997 through 2000 with Philadelphia. But Maddon didn't think that would affect the managerial choice.

"I can't even imagine, based on the discussions I've had with those people, that they would let anything influence them from the outside," Maddon said.

Francona and Schilling have both passed physicals administered by the Red Sox.

The last ace Schilling teamed up with was Randy Johnson. That partnership ended when Boston completed a trade with Arizona last Friday that brought Schilling to the Red Sox for pitchers Casey Fossum and Brandon Lyon and two minor leaguers.

Now Schilling, who has never won a Cy Young award, is part of an outstanding rotation with Martinez, Derek Lowe and Tim Wakefield.

"My goal right now is to try to take the Cy Young away from Pedro, or Derek or Tim," Schilling said in a radio interview. Martinez "being here next year was very, very important to me."

He said he spoke Sunday with Martinez, a three-time Cy Young winner who would like an extension of his contract that has one year and $17.5 million remaining. Schilling will make at least $12 million under the last year of his contract with Arizona and agreed to a two-year extension through 2006 worth $25.5 million.

"For me it would be a pleasure to negotiate with Boston," Martinez said. "In baseball there are no guarantees, but obviously we are a better team with Schilling."

Schilling, who was sidelined much of 2003 with injuries and finished the season 8-9 with a 2.95 ERA, won 23 games in 2002 and 22 games in 2001.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and other club executives are expected to see Martinez when they visit the Dominican Republic within the next two weeks to inaugurate the team's baseball academy.

Boston also is pursuing free agent closer Keith Foulke, but there was no resolution Monday. Oakland is in the running to keep him.

Meanwhile, Red Sox owner John Henry thanked fans in an e-mail to reporters Sunday and said they were a big reason Schilling accepted the trade.

"So I want to thank all of our fans who have made the Red Sox such a viable economic and spiritual force," he said. "Despite, a very tough ending to the season, our fans are more resolute than ever to see this team succeed."

Pretty funny how the media's trying to stir up Curt & Pedros relationship or Their future relationship I mean every Pitcher competes with fellow Pitchers on the team , Don't You think Pettite competes with Mussina for the Ace spot & vice versa? Lets be realist if Pedro & Schilling compete against each other that will make each a better pitcher & it's scary to think that Pedro has never had competition on the same team to push Him . I feel that We will see a very sharp Pedro in 2004 being that it's commesense ... Oh & FYI Pedro will get His extension before Spring Training ...

If there's no story, then make one up.

Sounds like a lazy tactic, so we must be talking about sports writers.

Wow, he wants to do well. Who's have thunk it?

Primadona Pedro will be in a tiff over the fact that Schilling got to hand pick his manager so no need to stir it up.

    come on Dave

Francona is a players coach. I don't think Pedro gives a rat ass who the manager is as long as it isn't Jimy Williams.

Dave the Sox havebeen talking to francona for the past month & He's been the fav for the job for that period of time so get Your facts straight Bud .. Dave go to Espn.com & type Francona then search & You'll notice that the Francona talks Were started before Schilling before Schilling was rumored as going to the Yanks also.

So you think the Sox hiring Francona had nothing to do with Schilling?

It helped but Francona was always the fav for the job .

I think ithelped but he was already being called the favorite to get the job right after his interview.

Madden was the other guy, but they wanted someone who managed already at the Major League level.

Signing Schilling locked it in, but it was going to happen before he was signed IMO.

Why would you want to give that guy an extension?? 17.5 mil for a guy who can't beat the Yanks and can't win in the post-season???

If you can't see thru Pedro, you're blind. Last year it was "Pick up my option or I'll go elsewhere (meaning NY)" and now its "It would be an honor to negotiate with the Red Sox." Give me a break.

Pedro knows the writing is on the wall. He's about 8 months away from being the #2 and maybe the #3 in that rotation. Schilling is about to set the market in Boston and Pedro merely wants to lock in some guaranteed money before his arm falls off.

order Yourself a fried marlin oh wait the Marlins gave it to Ya Raw.....
doesn't say too much about your Sox...2 titles in 10 years compared to ZERO in 85. Impressive.

Lmao , You Guys crack Me up , 1st of all if the Sox had a Chimp instead of Grady as a Manager They would've won that game as in Timlin would've came in & We all know he was lights out in the Playoffs. 2nd of all if the Yanks get Pedro he would be the # 1 starter in a Heart beat . 3rd of all Pedro will have less of the load on Him with Schilling around I mean look at How many Pitches he threw in the ALCS & that will lead You to know that Pedro's the best Pitcher in the Majors if that does not work look up His carrer Stats.

Yes indeed. Pedro is looking for the most he can get now because
at the rate he's been going on the DL, his seasons are probably
numbered. He's an arrogant prima donna, but he's not stupid.
Too bad he thinks no one can see through his act.

When was the last Cy Young he won?? 2000?? His days as a workhorse are over. They tried holding him back last year during the season and that didn't work. That means they'll have to target his innings to 175 or so...for 17.5 mil I think I need a little more production.

...and if oakland didn't bumble and stumble their way on the basepaths during their series with boston, the red sox would've been out in the first round. "would've's" are weak as hell.

Pedro's just one of those guys who will be unhappy no matter where he plays. He'll get a lot of money, a lot of injuries, and he'll mouth off. So what? I hope the Sox give him a gigantic contract and his arm falls off. In that order.

Schilling will do well with the Sox but the Sox overpaid. Them's the breaks. Let's not hear any more crap about the Yankee payroll and we'll see what all the teams do next season.

And with a rotation of Curt Schilling, Pedro Martinez, and Derek Lowe/Tim Wakefield (how's that for a competitive advantage?), there is no reason why the Sox shouldn't win the World Series. The onus is not just on the Yankees.

I know you would love to put the Yanks in an underdog role ACPS, but that has the same chance as Kirsten Dunst going out with me.

Yanks will have a 200 million dollar payroll, which will be 75% higher than the Sox

IT will still be the Evil Empire against MLB according to the media.

I'm not talking payroll, I'm talking talent. If you guys choke again this year with those guys anchoring your starting pitching and an offense even close to the one you had last year, well.....maybe DAN SHAUGNESSY is onto something.

I hope so... I'd love to see the Sox give a boatload of money to a guy whose arm almost fell off 2 years ago, to a guy who used to throw the ball 98 mph but was reduced to a junkballer when his tired ass couldn't cut it in the 2003 playoffs, to a guy who wasn't nearly as good as he's capable of being in ANY of his 4 postseason starts this year, to a guy who needs his teammates to apologize for his despicable embarrassing actions in the middle of bench-clearing brawls, to a guy who leaves his team early to go home before the All-Star break, to a guy that choked in the 8th inning vs. the Yankees in game 7, want me to go on?

Give him a nice, long, loaded contract... Your team's future is in jeopardy already with all the free agents you're gonna have and the money you've already given to a 37-year old pitcher and a DH whose contract is so ridiculously unmovable that no team would literally pick him up for nothing this offseason.

If Pedro's bored waiting for the contract extension he can look this diagram over in the mean time, probably won't save him from the Yanks next season anyway though

The Sox do have talent and this is all fun to talk about now.

What happens when the Yanks sign Colon, Pettite and Matsui?

who has the talent advantage then?

I want ONE Yankee fan to admit it's an advantage. I admit it helps Boston over small market teams.

Money gives the Yankess almost a 100 % chance of being in the playoffs. They get in the big show. What happens from there is a crap shoot.

Sorry, but that argument is fallacious bunk. The Yankees wouldn't have made the playoffs in 2003 with all of their injuries in the first half and a league average payroll. But added payroll provides flexibility, which provides depth, which provides a safety net. Just because your team didn't win it all doesn't mean that the payroll didn't play a very significant role in getting them to the WS in the first place.

Lets look at the 8 teams that made the playoffs.
    Team: Payroll:
    Oakland $56,596,691
    Minnesota $65,318,977
    Boston $104,873,607
    New York Yankees $180,322,403

    Florida $63,281,152
    Chicago Cubs $86,576,763
    San Francisco $100,061,211
    Atlanta $103,912,011

Now look at the 8 teams with high payroll that didn't make the playoffs.
    Team: Payroll:
    New York Mets $116,253,927
    Los Angeles $109,248,680
    Texas $106,277,880
    St. Louis $101,825,848
    Philadelphia $95,338,704
    Arizona $92,665,040
    Seattle $92,268,063
    Anaheim $83,235,098

It's not about how much you spend, its about the players that you get for your money and how well they perform.

Oh, and I'm not surprised this thread descended into a bitch-and-moan fest about the big bad Yankees.

The argument I am refuting here is that the Yankees should win it all every year because of their payroll. It's absurd. The Red Sox had a higher payroll than the Yankees in 2000 and didn't even make the playoffs. There are so many examples of payroll meaing diddily squat - the Dodgers, Orioles, and Red Sox being examples of the past decade, and as I mentioned the Marlins and Angels winning the WS the past 2 years.

Gave WHAT to us raw? Honey, my World Series ended at the ALCS. I didn't want it to, and I honestly tried to care about the postseason after that, but nothing could have felt as good as humiliating the Boston Red Sox and keeping the Curse alive. Not finding a paper bag full of money. Not toppling the Bush administration. Not even a threesome with Benicio Del Toro and Eric Chavez. Watching the bruised, bloody, beaten Red Sox crawl out of the Bronx with a big fat NOTHIN is unparallelled to me.

So trust me, I'm not crying about the 2003 WS. The Marlins can have that one. The sun has to shine even on a dog's ass some days...

    I was being facetious.

Payroll dosen't guarantee a World Series trophy, but it usually gets you to the ALCS.

It also usually makes the Yankees the favorite to win it all every year too. Vegas thinks so at least.

Yes, you are bitching because any time someone mentions that the Yanks have won more than the Sox, you pull that out. Guess what, since they have had that much more payroll, they haven't won much more. They are also paying guys (read Williams and Jeter) more than they should because of past titles.

i bring it up because yankee fans think they get it the playoffs because of a farm system and guts and the mystique.

they paid williams more to keep him from boston

jeter becase the market was different

the yankees are the only team that can put themselves a playoff berth every year.

any other team with new yorks lineup and payroll wouldn't be signing anyone and wouldn't be going anywhere in 2004

more power to the yankees for doing it, they have the revenue stream and they spend it.

the yanks get to add colon, pettitte, sheffield and the bullpen guys.

they haven't won in the last few years but it's still the biggest advantage in sports with that payroll

Hm. I don't think so. I could be wrong, though.

Glad to see you've backed off of that original ridiculous claim.

What did Vegas think in 2000 when the Sox had a higher payroll than the Yanks. Can't blame them if they still considered the Yanks the favorites though over a team that hasn't won in 8+ decades

Vegas odds are set by (among other things) the number of people who bet. The Yanks, The Red Sox, and the Dodgers all make for sucky bets unless you stake a LOT of cash down. The reason? Too many people bet on those three teams.

LMAO, Nice try but try again If You think that I'm going to believe that Yankee fans did not want the WS I will tell You that Us Sox fans took 86" as a WS win but that would put Me in a stage of denial something You're in which I greatly pity You for .

Actually PS, although I'm not one of them, I know a ton of Yankees fans who were happy enough beating the Sox that they didn't care about the series. Of course, we have 26 others and 4 in recent years so maybe they're just not a glutton like I am.

This has turned into quite the school yard fight...neither side backing down.

For the Red Sox fans out there:

The Yankees have done a tremendous job into turning their payroll advantage into victories. Did they overpay to keep their core here? Yes, but it kept the core intact.

That is the real payroll advantage. We get to overpay to keep all of our stars, where as other teams can't. Is it fair? No, but then again, not much in life is fair.

Believe it or not Sox fans, there are some Yankee fans that don't turn a blind eye to the advantages we have. Then again, we're also the Yankee fans that don't bring up past Red Sox failures to make a point. If a Sox fan is being obnoxious enough, we just let them talk kinda chuckle when the Yankees beat them again.

    To the Yankee fans:

I hate the fact we didn't beat the Marlins. Might as well not even made the playoffs in my view.

Not even made the playoffs? Are you serious? You're not going to remember that blast by Boone for a long time? Come on.

Of course I am, it was a great moment...

I'm going to remember Beckett tagging out Posada for longer though.

They throw as many parades for winning the American League as they do for losing in the ALCS. For fans that say winning is second to breathing, there are sure alot out there that are placated with a Yankee loss in the World Series.

I wanted to f'in destroy those Marlins.
