Thread: Thurman Munson

    Thurman Munson

    25 years ago today.

For many, it is the Thurman Munson performance they remember most, as the gutty Yankee catcher's two-run eighth-inning homer trumped the three by George Brett and the Yanks fashioned a 6-5 win and a 2-1 lead in games over the Royals in the 1978 ALCS.

    YANKEE BASEBALL!!!

WOW! 25 years ago! Time sure does fly, but nothing compared to the way that ball flew. Even though not regarded as a power hitter, Thurman was a great hitter especially in the clutch. That was one of the most vicious line shot homers I've ever seen. I can still follow it's path in my mind's eye disappearing over that blue padded wall in left center....uh-oh here come the goose bumps. YANKEE BASEBAL! ! !

I was off the subway coming home from work when he hit that homer.

I recall that homer and another line drive homer he hit when I was in attendance at the old Met in Bloomington, Mn. against the Twins. It got out to left in half-a-heartbeat, slammed into the back of an empty seat and the seat back just exploded with wood splinters flying in all directions. Never forget that as long as I live.
