Rice's Cruz set to join Yankees
PITTSBURGH -- Jose Cruz, the Astros' first-base coach, was pleased to announce that son Enrique has reached an agreement with the Yankees.
Enrique, a second baseman who helped lead Rice to the College World Series title, was taken in the 14th round of the June draft by the Yankees. He reached a six-figure deal to give up his final year of eligibility with the Owls.
"He'll go to Tampa, and he'll be signing a contract on Sunday," the Astros' Cruz said. "He'll go play at (Class A) Staten Island."
Enrique Cruz led the Owls with a .352 average, tied for the team lead in home runs with 10 and was third in RBIs with 57. Jose Cruz Jr., who starts in right field for the Giants, preceded Jose Enrique at Rice.
"I'm excited too," Cruz said. " What can I say? I'll have two kids playing professional baseball. Everybody's proud of them."
Hopefully he can help that God awful offense Staten Island has this year.
