He is fat and slow. Could have done better. Looks like another try at the lottery for the Knicks next year. Sorry but he isn't going to improve that team. I saw him in G-Town and thought that his hands were sloppy and was slow-N-fat. I bet the Nets get something good at the 22 pick. Rod Thorn is smart. He drafter a European kid last year at the 24 pick. He is still there and will be here for the next season. IF he went thi year he would have been a top 7 pick. That is smart drafting!

I'm not sold on Sweetney but doesn't seem like a bad pick...it does appear that my Knicks got a great pick for 30 with Lampe...he was the last player left there but he really felt the love from the Knick fans that were there and went crazy when he was picked...even got the fans to lay off Layden a little bit!

I hope these guys can make an impact quickly for my lowly Knicks...Go Knicks!

Pretty good night for Layden. I read somewhere that Sweetney is more like Clarence Weatherspoon than Elton Brand. I like Sweetney though and hope he can do well.
Seems like Lampe will not be a Knick for a couple years though. Who knows.

I do not like Layden but it did seem to be a pretty good night for him...this Lampe contract thing does seem a bit sticky...guess, we'll see what happens...

the last guy they got would be the second tallest guy in the NBA but he needs a lot of time to develop...still hard to argue with 7' 4" though...especially as a late pick...

Boyz II Men - It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday

How do I say goodbye to what we had?
The good times that made us laugh
    Outweigh the bad.

I thought we'd get to see forever
    But forever's gone away
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

I don't know where this road
    Is going to lead
All I know is where we've been
    And what we've been through.

If we get to see tomorrow
I hope it's worth all the wait
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

And I'll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

And I'll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

Me smells a little jealousness here. Sad attempt at the Kidd leaving stuff. Just aint gonna happen. Maybe we should meet at the news conference that Kidd has to announce that he will stay at the swamp for the rest of his career.

NETS KEEPING CLOSE TABS ON KIDD'S TRAVEL PLANS

    By FRED KERBER

June 28, 2003 -- Claims that Jason Kidd will visit San Antonio July 6-7 as part of his free agency experience yesterday triggered a chain of questions and denials regarding potential illegal contact before the July 1 negotiating period.

Privately, the Nets must wonder how the fixed dates were determined without contact between the Spurs and Kidd. Teams may negotiate starting Tuesday and then sign free agents July 16. Prior contact is forbidden.

"We have spoken to the Spurs and they have assured us that they have not and will not have any contact with free agents until July 1," a league spokesman said yesterday.

And Kidd's agent Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management, reiterated what he said Thursday night when the report aired on ESPN that Kidd intended to visit on those days, eventually sign on July 16 and also had interest in Dallas, Denver plus the Nets. Schwartz indicated that no dates have been set and there has been no illegal contact.

But you can't blame the Nets for being a little touchy. The Spurs were less than tickled in 2000 when there were reports, prior to the negotiating date, that both Tim Duncan and Grant Hill would visit Orlando on the same weekend.

Nets president Rod Thorn yesterday declined to comment on any potential tampering, saying only that he still believed the Nets had the best shot to retain Kidd and that "Jason has his itinerary and we'll find out what it is."

Spurs GM R.C. Buford told reporters, "We've had no contact to arrange any appointments with free agents."

The Nets knew Kidd would visit San Antonio. And now they've heard Denver and Dallas have piqued Kidd's interest. Beyond San Antonio, Denver would have the money — about $18 million — to spend on free agents while Dallas has the talent base that Kidd wants in his quest for a championship.

"That was kind of interesting," Denver GM Kiki Vandeweghe said about Kidd's notice of the Nuggets. "No problem there. That's obviously very nice to see. We can't have any contact with him [until July 1]. I'm really pleased he would consider us, obviously."

So the Nets hope first-round pick Zoran Planinic is their backup point guard next season — backing up Kidd, of course.

"I still feel we've got the best chance of anybody, to get [Kidd] back . . . because of other factors. I don't think money is the biggest issue," said coach Byron Scott. "

Zoran, what I like about him is his court awareness. I love the fact that he's a 6-7 point guard. He handles the ball extremely well, has a great feel for the game, sees the floor extremely well, can shoot. When it was all said and done, we thought he was the best player we had in."

I am not a Knicks basher -- I just rooted for another team AFTER mine was out of it...unlike you rooting for the Clippers last year during the season...No excuses on this one for Sweetney -- lucky for him, he's got two strikes left! I'll have to write him a nice letter.

Tremendous player, monster in the paint with great touch and good post moves.

Great pick, but not for the Knickerbockers. Does that make 4 or 5 undersized power forwadrs on their roster now?
"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston. It is understandable, but wrong that he would try to deflect the accountability for his mistakes on to others and to a system for which he voted in favor. It is time to get on with life and forget the sour grapes."

fyi Ms. Chick and mr rock, a team coming off a 37 - 45 record following a 30 - 52 seas mired in a perennial rebuild on the fly mode, over-capped and over stocked w/ under whelming talent led by a nondescript lame duck coach and dain bread front office does not have a bandwagon to ride...

luna you more than anyone should know unlike some I never ever bailed on my team cause they sucked, which is what these new NOTS bandwagon riders formerly knicks fair-weather fans are guilty of… I temporarily quit being a knicks fan the day they reupped that already overpaid underachieving patently soft allan Houston to a max contract, and also threw wads of dough to super scrub Clarence weatherspoon… when I quit in the summer of 2001, the knicks had just come off a 48 – 34 seas and first round flameout to the van gundy exiled childs led raptors… in other words they were a playoff team when I quit and opted for the patently pathetic, perennial nba doormat clips… I had enough of van dickhead ................ing up my team from benching spree and camby in favor of lj and starks to forcing out grunfeld to benching childs in favor of ward to sending childs packing to cananda for lard ass Jackson only to watch childs torch us in the playoffs… the object of my wrath from day one of the post riley era has and always will be jeff van knicks killer… I hated him I hated what he single handedly did to my team and the van gundy endorse resigning of allan Houston to a max contract was the proverbial straw that broke my friggin back and I QUIT!!!

But unlike these fair-weather kidd lovers or ridiculously overhyped over glorified phony ass gundy, I did not quit because they started to suck… I never walked away from a sinking ship only to embrace our cross border interdivisional rivals… I did not quit mid season on guys that were giving me 150% blood sweat and tears despite the gundy inspired chronically flawed framework of our team… I simply had enough of this corny little jerk ................ing up my team and and giving my city a bad rep… and fyi, I took the knicks back in the midst of their worst season in my memory... win or lose, after that egg head quit on the team, I welcomed them back w/ open arms… and I represent my team daily win or lose… ................ the nets I’m from new york and I rep the knicks til the day I die…

Anyways just in case you doubt my words, here’s a few relevant posts:

    http://www.nypost.com/sports/knicks/29444.htm

I’m officially turning in my knicks fan card… this team sucks, the management sucks, the coach sucks, the players except for spree suck, and the longer I associate myself w/ this team the more I feel like, believe it or not, yes I too suck… and ya know what, I don’t like to suck…. I ain’t a mutt or sux fan so ‘scuse me if I ain’t exactly enamored w/ the prospect of watching the same ................ty product embarrass me for another decade or so…

the demise of our perennial championship contendin team is in full force… it all traces back to that power hungry, pass the buck, no I in team preachin’, fax it in, backstabbin, snake, riles… ever since his power play failed and he fled to south beach (ahhh), it’s been downhill…

first we get forcefed this former div 3 point guard, career assistant, never played in the nba, leg hugging, unimaginative, Patrick ewing & oakley groupie, allan houston suck up, camby trashing, spree benching, van dickhead coach…

next this van civic driving miilionaire becomes permanent and forces out the very much accomplished and capable ernie grunfeld by mismanaging the talented team ernie assembled, (funny they didn’t want riles to gm, but then once he’s gone ernie all of a sudden ain’t good enough..)

then we gotta hear from van ................head and his exboss checketts how great Charlie ward is to the tune of some $26-8mil for 4 years and van dumbass starts sorry Charlie over the much more proficient true point guard chris childs…

then we hire some free agent deterrent square from utah of all places to attract top free agents… imagine that.. yeah I can see em knocking the door down now to see layden and get the chance to not be used by van asswipe…

NO ONE WANTS TO COME HERE!!!! Grant snubbed us last seas for riles, hill snubbed us for doc, cwebb would rather talk to isaiah than even visit ny… this dumbass from utah trades away the only decent point guard we got for old fat slow lard ass mark Jackson, predictably leading to our first, first round flameout in years…

then another summer rolls around and another dud gets recruited to represent new york… we coulda had Antonio davis.. we couldda had c webb… we couldda done freakin SOMETHING.. but no, we go after career scrub CLARENCE weatherspoon.. whoop dee friggin doo…

on top of that we’re stuck w/ bein extorted by mr softee himself allan punk Houston 100 freakin million dollars to not shoot in 4th quarters and second halves of seaons for another freakin 7 years… UUGGHHHH!!! I can NOT take another year of this guy… he irks the hell outta me… he’s a wuss… he is as UN NEW YORK as they come… he’s the softest most unagressive shooting guard in the nba… he’s killin spree’s career… I mean spree is a two guard playin outta position sacrificing his own numbers to the obvious detriment to the team to accommodate van losuh and humble Houston… why the hell should spree have to go up against bigger guys out of position every night… what the hell has Houston done to sacrifice for the team.. he bitched about playin point in the 3 guard alignment and then bitched about taking shots just to take em…

I’m gonna write spree and tell him to hold out… eff it demand a trade… hold out until they move him back to his natural position… why should he continue to suffer for this wuss Houston and bum coach… and if he takes my advice, I’ll be a fan of what ever team he goes to… nuthin can be worse than bein a knicks fan… eff it man, I quit… I quit, I quit, I freakin quit… no more go new york go new york go new york go for me… as far as I’m concerned they can go to freakin hell…

van jackass, Charlie antisemite, wuss Houston, weatherspoon, layden UGGHHH… this team sucks… I have already disowned all of my team shirts but spree and cambymans… I’ll keep those but I’ll cross out that ugly ass mutts colored knicks, and just leave their names… this is official, I am no longer a fan of the knicks… ahh feelin better al freakin ready… effin scrubs! Wish they’d move to joisey like dem sorry ass gang green infested jets…

    WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!

    Wallace matthews

July 18, 2001 -- TIME was when teams gave the kind of money the Knicks are about to give Allan Houston only to the most special of players. The kind who can take control of games. Carry sagging teams. Win championships, or at least die trying.

One hundred million dollars is the kind of scratch you give to franchise players, to leaders, to guys you just cannot win without.

Now, the Knicks choose to give that kind of money to a player they can't win with.

Allan Houston has the talent of a leader but the mind of a follower.
That is why he foolishly went along with Charlie Ward's anti-Semitic rantings last year.

It is also why he almost never takes a game into his own hands. Why he never demands the basketball for the last shot of a crucial game. Why he never seizes the kind of responsibility routinely shouldered by the true greats like Michael Jordan and the near-greats like his teammate, Latrell Sprewell.

Allan Houston doesn't want that kind of burden. Maybe he fears it.
For whatever reason, there are just too many nights when you don't even notice Allan Houston is out on the floor.

No amount of money can change a man's character. One hundred million dollars is not going to turn Allan Houston into Allan Iverson. It won't even turn him into another Sprewell.

All it will do is insure that the Knicks remain trapped in the corner Dave Checketts maneuvered them into - a roster overcrowded with shooting guards, a payroll that is hopelessly capped out and a team once again destined to disappoint its fans.

Turns out that was Checketts' parting gift to the Knicks and to New York: a future held hostage by Allan Houston.

There is simply too much air between Houston's big games - his last impact performance in a truly big game came on June 11, 1999, the night the Knicks beat the Pacers to go to the NBA Finals - and not enough between his disappearing acts.

On the night the Knicks were eliminated by the Raptors in the first-round of the 2001 playoffs, Houston managed just 16 quiet points.
When Sprewell, who played his heart out, said some guys didn't give it all up in that final game, you can bet one of the guys he was talking about was Allan Houston.

Sometime this afternoon, the Knicks are expected to make the Houston contract - six years at $99.25 million their Major Announcement of the Offseason.

But what they are really telling you is this: Next year will be a lot like last year. So will the year after that and the year after that and the year after that.

It will be the same unbalanced, ill-conceived lineup playing the same erratic, unsatisfying and often ugly game.

It will be the same cruel tease of a regular season followed by the all-too-familiar postseason exposure, followed shortly thereafter by collapse.
The only thing different will be the ticket prices, which of course have gone up.

    Everything else is going down.

After they went out in the first round of last year's playoffs to the Raptors, it was generally agreed that the Knicks could not seriously challenge for an NBA championship as currently constructed, that a lineup featuring Sprewell, Houston and Glen Rice simply does not work.
Of the three, the one to move was Houston. With the $21 million they owed him coming off the cap, that would have been addition by subtraction.

Instead, the Knicks opted for subtraction by the addition of four more years to Houston's existing contract.
    And for what?

For a player whose physical skills far outstrip his mental strength. A shooting guard with a great touch for the hoop, but no grasp for the jugular. A guy who will hit the first shot of any game for you but wants no part of the last shot, especially in a tough spot.

Today, the Knicks give you six more years of Allan Houston. But what they're really giving you is six more years of business as usual.
    The business of failure.

    KNICKS JAZZING
    UP THEIR ACT

August 11, 2001 -- Just call them the New York Jazz.
It remains to be seen what kind of music the new Knicks will make, but the club acquired two players more in tune with both GM Scott Layden and Jeff Van Gundy when they traded unhappy forward Glen Rice for forward Shandon Anderson and point guard Howard Eisley.

The Knicks completed a three-team trade last night - as The Post reported yesterday - that brings them two of Layden's former Jazz favorites. Anderson, a free agent who averaged 8.7 points and 4.1 rebounds for Houston last season, came along in a sign-and-trade, while Eisley joined the Knicks from Dallas. Now, the Knicks have a logjam at small forward and a point guard glut.

Rice, who did not get along with Van Gundy, was sent to Houston while Muggsy Bogues was shipped to the Mavericks. In addition, Dallas traded Kyle Hill to the Rockets so it can land Miami's Tim Hardaway, using a $3.2 million trade exception.

The acquisition of Eisley means Charlie Ward's days are numbered. The Knicks have been talking to Golden State about sending Ward westward for center Adonal Foyle, so it's just a matter of time before the point guard is dealt far, far away.

The three-team trade also proves the three-gun offense of Rice, Latrell Sprewell and Allan Houston was a dud. It was just 11 months ago that Layden said Rice would be a tremendous success at the Garden after acquiring him for Patrick Ewing.

Times change, and so do game plans, after you're knocked out in the first round of the playoffs.

This past season Rice averaged a career-low 12.0 points and did not fit into Van Gundy's plans as a sixth man. The slashing Anderson, who will get $42 million over six years, is much more suited for that role.

"To get an opportunity to get these two guys at the same time was really something we couldn't pass up," said Layden, who drafted Anderson in the second round in 1996 and signed Eisley out of the CBA one year earlier. "It will be interesting to see how this works out."

Rice, 34, spent just one injury-plagued season with the Knicks. He went from a championship in Los Angeles with Phil Jackson's famed triangle offense to Van Gundy's triangle freak show, an offense that could not get the most out of three similar weapons. The Rockets need an outside shooter and Rice fills the bill there.

The deal makes the Knicks younger and more athletic, but it remains to be seen if they will be better. The 6-6 Anderson is 27 while the 6-2 Eisley is 28.

Van Gundy was pleased with the deal and said, "We get some versatility amongst our three guys. Shandon is a good slasher, he's younger and he's more defensive minded."

If the Knicks somehow go into the season with three point guards, it will not sit well with Ward, Mark Jackson and Eisley, who figures to start. "I'm not sure comfort should be a major thought in developing your team," Van Gundy said. "We're coming off a very, very good regular season and a very, very poor post-season. I don't think anyone should feel real comfortable, we should be more worried about being determined, instead of comfortable."

Eisley was traded to Dallas last season, but did not fit into Don Nelson's scheme as he averaged 9.0 points and 3.6 assists. The Mavs have been looking to trade him all summer. Now Eisley and Anderson, for the second time in their careers, will get the chance to reward Layden's faith in them.

Noted Layden of his old friends, "Shandon can run the floor, he can post-up very well and he's a guy who competes defensively and he's gotten better each year. With Howard, I think the point guard position is always a position that's hard to find. When you turn the ball over to a player and have them run your team, it's paramount that you have someone who is going to play hard, is smart and makes good decisions and Howard has done all those things."

He might as well have said, "All that Jazz."

UGHHH!!!!

i'll make my decsison before the season starts... i may just have to bite the bullet and support em despite my hatred for grumpy, and the two antisemites, but it'll be tough... but one things certain, I am now a clippers fan... if i take the knicks back they can be the mistress, but the clippers, i'm married to em now...

i liked the trade... eisely's got a great perimeter game... if it falls thru it's just another case of em bein snakebitten... think the sux curse is bad...

it's embarassing to say your knicks fan when your team scores 80 one night and 60 the next due our offensively challenged coach... it's embarassing having a coach who insists on only playing 8 guys even though we got like 10 good players on this team... it's embarassing watching your coach strung around the leg of your hated rival hanging for dear life... it's embarassing seeing your caoch humiliated by jordan and phil jackson for years then suck up to them... it's embarassing to see your point guard berated by opposing point guards and he turns the other cheek... it's embarassing losing to the friggin tornot raptors... it's embarassing to when a bum like houston gets paid 100mil...these bums don't represent ny... i'm sick of it man, that's all...

i had more knicks pride when we had bernard king and strugled to make the playoffs every year.. i had more pride when we had guys like ray williams and bill cartwright... maybe not the most talented, but guys that played w/ self respect and heart.. guys that represented ny... charlie heisman, the anitsemetic preacher does not represent ny... allan houston the softest player in basketball since charles smith does not represent ny... and a civic driving multimillionaire coach of the one of the wealthiest teams in the nba, certainly does not represent ny... i hate em... but i do love the knicks... i don't want to be one of these negative fans that sits around bitchin all seas abouyt how my team sucks... so i gotta decide before the seas, either tough it out and accept charlie the scrub, van offensively challenged, and humble pie houston, or move on, and wish my favs like spree, camby and thomas well... it's a tough one... i don't wanna be a hypocrite... in truth, there've never been good times w/ the knicks... just bad and worse... i've toughed it my whole life... and i'm not giving up cause we haven't won... just that I HATE VAN GUNDY, CHARLIE WARD AND ALLAN HOUSTON... sorry had to get that point off my chest....

anyways you sound like a pretty big knicks fan too, and i appreciate the advice... but i'm gonna have to dwell on this for a while.. can i really stomach another SIX YEARS of allan houston in new york.. can i really watch basketball and not support my favorite team... life can be so hard...

i gave the jets one last chance waaaay back in the 70's and they blew it, i even gave, gasp, gulp, sigh, the mutts one last chance back in '76 and they too blew it... now i despise both teams w/ everything i got, and i'll be forced to add my knicks to that list too, if van jackass mismanages another well assembled team... i really HATE that guy... bring back hubie...

Whatever… anyways good riddance… ole van folicleless was singlehandedly responsible for the departure of grunfeld, for what you ask... for trading oakley for camby... his chronic misuse of teams assets has been ridiculous... rememebr, when spree and camby came here that SAT!!!!! we went to the finals that year because van dumbass was FORCED TO PLAY THEM DUE TO PAT AND LJ BREAKING DOWN AGAIN!!!!!

so now van leghugger decides since he’s got enough dough to fill his civics gas tank for the next 10,000 years he’s gonna quit to spend time w/ his family… bunk… look at what camby went through last seas, and he still guts it out… the only thing worse than a van loser is a van quitter… if spree or camby or one of the players would have pulled this bunk they would have been properly called a spoiled rich athlete, well here you have a spoiled rich coach… he quit on his team… hope he’s real proud of himself… he’s so burnt out… tell me who the hell in America ain’t ................in burnt out… but we don’t got no $10million dollar contract to weasel out of…

Anyways, good riddance, only he forgot to pack his bags on the way out… shouldda talked the antisemite twins into joining him on his sabbatical… none of em ever belonged in new york or on the knicks…

hmmm, when I get 12 hours to read that post, maybe I can answer it! in the meantime, I NEVER quit my team, just supported another team that was in the playoffs much the way I supported the Cardinals after the Yankees went home last year! And it didn't hurt that the team I temporarily adopted through their playoff run had a really hot pointguard -- hot in every way.
