I'm not sure I understand the question. Do you mean say 3rd and how many yards to go?

Man, this is a tough one. I've been searching but to no avail. But here are some tidbits for you:

Most yards penalized, both teams, in one game was an incredible 374. Cleveland vs. Chicago in 1951. (Talk about over-officious jerks!)

Most first downs in a game, 39 Jets vs Miami 1988.

Most first downs in a game by both teams was 62 San Diego vs Seattle 1985.

Sorry, I just can't find an answer to your question.

A personal note, this is my 800th post. Congrats to me!

Back in 1984, the Baltimore Colts, led by Big Bob Irsay, were facing 4th and long when they packed up their bags in the dead of night, went around end, and drove 739 miles for a first down in Indianapolis.

How very true Bob! Man, I have some friends who are still sick about that fiasco.

Too bad Wilpon and Doubleday won't try that.
