NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Boston Red Sox made a move to strengthen their lineup Sunday when they acquired Jeremy Giambi from the Phillies in exchange for right-handed prospect Josh Hancock.
Though Giambi certainly isn't in his brother Jason's class, he is an up and coming left-handed hitter who made considerable strides in 2002. In a year split between the A's and Phillies, the 28-year-old belted 20 homers and drove in 45 runs in 313 at bats.
What the Red Sox like most is his on-base capabilities. Giambi posted a .414 on-base percentage in 2002, and is at .381 for his career. The Phillies received Giambi from Oakland in exchange for John Mabry in a May 22 trade.
The Red Sox are trying to model their entire franchise around a disciplined hitting approach, which was preached by the Athletics.
The Phillies no longer had much use for Giambi after acquiring prized slugger and first baseman Jim Thome via free agency. And the other two spots Giambi can play, left field and right field, are occupied respectively by Pat Burrell and Bobby Abreu.
Boston is set in the outfield, but has yet to firm up first base or designated hitter. Giambi could possibly roam between those two slots. The Red Sox have until Dec. 20 to tender a contract to incumbent first baseman Brian Daubach.
As for Hancock, the Red Sox liked him enough to make him a September callup, and he made his first Major League start at Comiskey Park on Sept. 26. He pitched three games for the Sox, going 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA.
The 24-year-old Hancock was 4-2 with a 3.45 ERA at Triple-A Pawtucket, after going 3-4 with a 3.61 ERA at Double-A Trenton.
He isn't a high-level prospect, but is thought to be someone who can emerge into a fourth or fifth starter with a little seasoning.
"He is a solid prospect as a starter and has three big league pitches: fastball, knuckle-curve and slider," said Phillies GM Ed Wade. "He gives us another arm to add to the quality of pitching prospects we have in our organization."
Like the Red Sox, the Phillies don't currently have any rotation slots open for 2003. So Hancock projects as either a long reliever or a Triple-A starter.
The Red Sox also made a trade the day before the meetings started, acquiring second baseman Todd Walker from the Reds.
Jason's brother is now the enemy...

I hope Jason's bro finally gets a chance to shine, he has tons of potential and needs to be allowed to play. Good move for both sides.

I didn't hear about this one. White or Red?
If Red it will take me back to the time when the brothers DiMaggio played for us and the BoSox.

Looking at this trade again, it looks like Boston got an incredibly great deal. They sent a good pitcher that doesn't project into more than a 4 or 5 and isn't even in their rotation for someone who will be in the mix next season.
Why did they make this trade when they could have just signed Todd Zeile for more money?![]()
Theo is abusing the farm system just like Duquette did.
He isn't the better of the two Giambi's, but I guess its not a bad pickup.
Actually he's putting it to good use. He essentially traded a John Burkett type for someone who can actually contribute big-time. Holding onto prospects for the sake of holding onto prospects is just plain stupid. I'm pretty sure he doesn't even rank on their top 10 lists, while Jeremy is a proven Major League player with tremendous upside. This isn't an Ed Sprague or Dante Bichette.Originally posted by deranged2005

This is a good deal from sox perspective. First, Giambi is only making about 1 million. Hancock was a starter part of the time in the minors, and was one of the few major league ready prospects, but his role appeared to be the bullpen. He definately did not have the endurance to start. Most likely he will be LF/DH normally and RF on the road. And I see Floyd being signed as the 1b man. He is actually an OBP machine, I don't mind him batting 2nd in line up despite low average. He hits both lefties and righties equally. He is a little younger than when his brother's career took off. So if he gets developes, hell even through roids since that's what it looks like big bro used, he could become a very very good major league player.
I think it is good news. Last time the Dimaggio brothers were competing like this, it was a yankees golden age.
The plan is to play him has the everyday first base w/ some LF and DH mixed in...This means Daubauch's day's could be over. The first four in the sox line up is locked down from what I read. Damon, Walker, Nomar, Manny...perhaps the 9 hole for Giambi.Originally posted by Jeter&Johnson

Line up:
Damon, CF
Walker, 2B
Nomar, SS (if he's not delt...)
Manny, DH
Cliff F., LF (hopefully he is signed)
Shea, 3B
Tek, C

Giambi, 1B
this is exactly the kind of trade the yankees should have made instead of signing zeile. jeremy hit VERY well last year and will probably only get better.Originally posted by Looie #19

the sox have significantly improved their line-up in two spots already this off season, while the yankees have been scraping the bottom of the barrel for zeile, letting half the bullpen go, and considering dumb deals with montreal.
i hate to say this but if the sox get a decent pitcher to go with pedro and lowe, re-sign floyd and have no major injuries to thier stars they might have a better team than the yankees next year.
Giambi ninth? Maybe you've been confused into thinking that first basemen can't hit in Boston after Offerman and Tony Clark. Giambi is absolutely a better hitter than Hillenbrand, Varitek and Walker. I would put him seventh or higher.Originally posted by dirtdog7

Red Sox acquire Jeremy Giambi from Philadelphia for Hancock
By JIMMY GOLEN, AP Sports Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Now the Red Sox have a Giambi -- just like the New York Yankees.
Boston acquired Jeremy Giambi, the brother of 2000 American League MVP Jason, on Sunday in a trade that sent right-handed prospect Josh Hancock to the Philadelphia Phillies.
``He's ecstatic to be a part of the Boston Red Sox,'' general manager Theo Epstein said after the deal was announced at baseball's winter meetings. ``He talked about the rivalry with the New York Yankees. Now there's an added dimension with the Jeremy and Jason rivalry as well.''
Giambi fills one hole for the Red Sox, but talks on a blockbuster that would have landed Montreal ace Bartolo Colon have stalled. According to a baseball official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, the Expos asked for pitcher Casey Fossum, third baseman Shea Hillenbrand and another player.
Epstein said the deal was never close to fruition.
``We're not that close on anybody,'' he said late Sunday night.
The Giambi brothers played together on the A's in 2000-01 before Jason left for the Yankees as a free agent. Last season, they set the major league record for homers by brothers with 61 -- 41 of them by Jason -- to surpass the total by Joe DiMaggio (46) and Vince DiMaggio (13) in 1937.
A third DiMaggio brother, Dom, joined the Red Sox in 1940 while Joe was in the midst of his Hall of Fame career with the Yankees. Once again, the civic rivalry will become a sibling rivalry as well.
``It is a huge rivalry. I think it's going to be great to have that going on,'' Jeremy Giambi said on Sunday. ``It's a World Series atmosphere every time New York plays Boston and I think this is only going to make it better.''
Jeremy Giambi will have a chance to be Boston's regular first baseman, but to do so he will have to improve defensively. If not, he will fill a hole at designated hitter; he could also help out in left field.
``He's committed to working very hard and coming to spring training early to work on his defense,'' Epstein said. ``If Jeremy's playing a majority of the games at first base, that means he's more than adequate defensively.''
Last year, Tony Clark and Brian Daubach played first for the Red Sox, but Clark was a bust. Although Epstein said the trade didn't close the door on Daubach's return, it would have to be at a salary far below the $2.3 million he earned last year.
``Brian's still on the roster,'' Epstein said. ``We obviously have a decision to make.''
Giambi, who earned $1,065,000 last year, was in the same position with the Phillies. It's possible the Red Sox could have gotten him without giving up a prospect if Philadelphia didn't offer him a contract, but Epstein didn't want to take a chance that someone else could grab him first.
``There was an active trade market for him,'' he said. ``We're confident we can get him signed up.''
Giambi, 28, started last season with Oakland and batted .274 with eight homers and 17 RBIs before he was traded to the Phillies on May 22 for John Mabry. He hit .244 with 12 homers and 28 RBIs for Philadelphia, and became expendable when the Phillies signed free agent Jim Thome.
``It's a great opportunity for me to play first every day,'' Giambi said. ``I've been working hard this year, even more than in the past, knowing I've only got a few more years to prove myself as an everyday player.''
Hancock, 24, made his major league debut in September and went 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA in one start and two relief appearances.
``We like Josh,'' Epstein said. ``The Phillies are getting a good one.''
A fifth-round selection in the 1998 draft, he had surgery about four weeks ago to repair a torn groin. Phillies general manager Ed Wade said he expects a full recovery, but also said Hancock may be behind other pitchers when spring training starts in mid-February.
``His timetable's a little bit stunted at this point,'' Wade said. ``This is the type of quality arm that adds depth to an area that we've already improved.''
Good Luck to Jeremy Giambi. This trade will definetly make the Boston/Yankees rivarly more intense. Can't wait for the 2003 season to start.
