According to WNBC Channel 4 Glavine has agreed to a deal with the Mutts. Didn't hear all the details but it is a 3 year deal with some options for a 4th. Ugh! Now all the Mutts fans will be walking around like they are the greatest team going!![]()

Although who knows what Mutt fans are thinking now that they have Glavine...
Good move for the Mets. They would have been crazy not to do what they could to get him.

Reports: Mets snag Glavine

NEW YORK -- The Mets reportedly have taken one giant step in closing the gap on the Atlanta Braves in the National League East on Thursday by signing free agent left-hander Tom Glavine to a three-year contract with a club option for the fourth year.
Several broadcast reports early Thursday evening had Glavine choosing the Mets over the Phillies and the Braves, for whom the left-hander has spent his entire career.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but speculation is that the Mets have guaranteed $29 million over three years with a $9.5 million option if Glavine pitches 210 innings in 2005 or reaches 630 innings pitched through the three years.
Signing Glavine is a coup for the Mets seeing as they managed to outbid the Phillies, who signed two of their three priority free agents in Jim Thome and David Bell, and the Braves. Glavine, 36, spent his entire 15-year Major League career in Atlanta after being drafted by the Braves in the second round in 1984. He compiled a 242-143 record.
Glavine won a World Series ring, two Cy Young awards and was selected for the All-Star team eight times during his time with the Braves. He won 20 games in five different seasons and has not had a losing year since 1990 when he went 10-12.
In 17 career starts at Shea Stadium, Glavine is 6-4 with a 3.07 ERA, allowing 37 earned runs in 108 1/3 innings. He went 16-7 in 35 career starts against the Mets with a 2.86 ERA.
The Mets (75-86) finished last in the NL East last season, 26 1/2 games behind the Braves. Once Fred Wilpon, the Mets owner, and general manager Steve Phillips hired Art Howe to replace Bobby Valentine as manager at the end of October, they turned their attention towards signing Glavine, who will be 37 on Opening Day.
Wilpon personally called Glavine to gauge his interest in the Mets. On Nov. 15, the Mets presented their first offer to Glavine's agent, Gregg Clifton. Six days later, Glavine and Clifton visited the Mets in New York. Fred and Jeff Wilpon, the Mets' chief operating officer, and Phillips showed Glavine around some New York and Connecticut suburbs and then took him to lunch in Manhattan where they also met Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Talks heated up over the last week, shortly after the Phillies signed Thome to a six-year, $85 million contract on Monday. Clifton requested a guaranteed four-year deal from all three teams, but nobody was willing to take that step.
The Braves guaranteed three years on Tuesday, but a meeting with Glavine in Atlanta on Tuesday reportedly did not go well.
The Mets improved their final offer slightly, making the fourth-year performance incentives easier to achieve.
Glavine will be the ace of the Mets staff. Al Leiter and Pedro Astacio fill the next two spots. The final two pitchers in the rotation have yet to be determined and might not be known until the end of Spring Training.

By Patrick Mulrenin / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- The Mets reportedly have taken one giant step in closing the gap on the Atlanta Braves in the National League East on Thursday by signing free agent left-hander Tom Glavine to a three-year, $34 million contract with a club option for the fourth year.
Several broadcast reports early Thursday evening had Glavine choosing the Mets over the Phillies and the Braves, for whom the left-hander has spent his entire career.
The deal has not been officially completed or confirmed. Mets general manager Steve Phillips, reached Thursday evening, declined comment on the matter. The contract is contingent upon Glavine passing physical. The Mets have scheduled a press conference for Monday.
Signing Glavine is a coup for the Mets seeing as they managed to outbid the Phillies, who signed two of their three priority free agents in Jim Thome and David Bell, and the Braves. I saw an interview with Larry Bowa yesterday and he said that the Phillies are either going to get a LH veteran pitcher (meaning Glavine) or a RH veteran pitcher. From the way he said it, it was almost like as far as LHP goes, it was either Glavine or no one.Originally posted by TinoBambino

You guys seriously don't think that this will help the Mets at all?
Their pitching was the problem last year.
With this lineup:
1. Timo Perez, CF
2. Roberto Alomar, 2B
3. Edgardo Alfonzo, 3B (maybe)
4. Mike Piazza, C
5. Mo Vaughn, 1B
6. Jeromy Burnitz, RF
7. Roger Cedeno, CF
8. Rey Ordonez, SS
9. Pitcher's Spot, P
Starting Rotation:
1. Tom Glavine, L
2. Al Leiter, L
3. Pedro Astacio, R
4. Steve Trachsel, R
5. Jeff D'Amico, R
and Bullpen:
1. Armando Benitez, R
2. John Franco, L
3. David Weathers, R
4. Mark Guthrie, L
5. Scott Strickland, R
6. Steve Reed, R
Their lineup still isn't bad. You have to admit that both Alomar and Piazza had off-years last year. Both are better than they showed. Mo Vaughn, while still fat, was coming off an injury year. He had a pretty good second half and ended up with 26 homeruns. Burnitz still may rebound. He's always had a low batting average and he's always struck out a lot, but people quickly forget that he has legitimate 40-homerun power. And there is also talk of the Mets shipping him out if they don't think that he will produce.
The starting rotation, which was such a question mark last year, is suddenly decent. Glavine and Leiter, while both up there in age, are still good pitchers. Astacio was good last year and can be a solid number three starter. Trachsel is up and down and D'Amico was bad last year.
But anyone who counts the Mets out will be quite surprised in September and October.
They had a bad year last year.
But I think it's very very foolish to discount this signing and very very foolish to bury the Mets now.

Well, don't forget they are moving the fences in about 10 feet for next year. They're going to be scoring alot more runs then they have been. As it has been already stated, their stars all had slump seasons last year. I don't see it happening again. If the pitching holds up they are going to win alot of games and at least be in the hunt. But in all seriousness, I agree with Hitman and DJeter--the Mets did underacheive the last few years. What I think their problem was was that after they got to the WS in '00 they hardly changed anything and then after doing poorly in '01, massively overhauled. I think maybe changing a little more after '00 and not so much in '01 would went better. Of course, Bobby V. wasn't exactly helping matters any. But now hes gone and Artie is in, so it'll be an interesting year for the Mets...darn, I'm gonna be too busy with other things to care.![]()

Seriously, I don't know what Glavine was thinking when he signed with the Mets. First of all, they're Atlanta' s rival, second, they suck, third, they REALLY suck, fourth, well, they'll always be in fourth place in their division, and fifth, they suck REAL hard. It's probably the money but I would rather see Glavine in a Red Sox uniform than some dirty Mutt. Sigh, no more one-two punch from Glavine and Maddux. I'll miss that a lot.
I hope the Braves do everything they can to keep Maddux.
"I told them, 'You guys [Prior and Wood] are good,'" Dunston said. "'But this guy [Maddux] is the best.'"
I can't fault Glavine for signing with the team that offered him the most money. Especially since he's a die-hard union guy. The Braves have barely even seemed like a player in this as if they weren't really that interested in re-signing him so I think Glavine felt pretty free to explore all his options.Originally posted by KLJ

I think this signing is a good one for the Mets that will help them a lot at least in the short-term. I never like throwing a lot of money and a long-term contract at a pitcher in his late 30's because you never know what you're going to get at the end of the contract. But if you're going to take a risk on someone, Glavine is worth the risk.

He might've been wiser signing w/the Phillies. At least they weren't cellar dwellers last season.
To the best of my knowledge they are. I read it after the WS ended, it was in the Hartford Courant. One of my best friends is a Mets fan and he confirmed it was true. It was at least 10 feet.Originally posted by Jersey Yankee

This was a no-brainer for the Mets. I'm just surprised that Glavine would want to pitch for them.

This move might come in handy for the Mets when they're battling the Braves in September for the Division Title. For the past few years (last year aside), it's come down to a few key games between the Mets and the Braves and the Braves always pulled it out.
But now the Mets have Glavine. Who better to stop the Braves in a key game than Mr. Brave himself. No one can know the Braves' hitters better than Glavine.
They got a smart, crafty lefty who's got the stuff and the background to help the Mets finally win some of those important September games against the Braves.
I guess it's also fitting that the Braves got ex-Met Mike Hampton, so the Mets stole Glavine from the Braves.
By the way, this seems like the first free agent bidding war that the Mets have actually won.
They lost A-Rod to the Rangers a few years ago and last year lost Juan Gonzalez to the Rangers. But this year they actually beat both the Braves and the Phillies to come out with their guy.
BRAVES: Vinny Castilla and Gary Sheffield will amost certainly hit better next year (hopefully). Mike Hampton is a question mark. The bullpen might be losing the big dogs. What will Smoltz do? Will Maddux stay and be the anchor?
PHILLIES: Jim Thome and a Solid Supporting Cast. A few more pitchers and this team is scary.
METS: A Sleeping Giant--all that offense, now with some halfway decent pitching...
MARLINS: Who knows? All that young offense and pitching, fire could strike.
EXPOS: A hungry team with some of the best talent around (Mr. Vasquez, Mr. Guerrero, Mr. Colon) that did well last year. With the Braves weaker, and the Expos ready to make a deal, who knows?
All I know is that tomorrow on WFAN it is going to be nothing but Fat Mike pontificating on Glavine and the Mets, and Met callers, hour after hour.![]()
Agreed, Deb. The Mets made the right move by improving their offer to sign Glavine. Not only do they bolster their staff but also take away a pitcher from their division nemesis Atlanta (or Philly, as the case might have been) in the process. If he signed elsewhere Mets fans would've felt like bridesmaids again so it helps their organization get over that 'second best' hump. Considering the free agent market and the way the Mets roster has been pieced together it made perfect sense to go the extra mile to sign him. If he was a power pitcher and/or had a history of injuries I would've had serious reservations about giving him a long term deal but Glavine's a pitcher that relies on control and changing speeds instead of power, plus he's a guy that has taken the ball every fifth day throughout his history even as he's aged.Originally posted by silverdsl
