Thread: National Anthem

    National Anthem

I love the American anthem and was inspired by the New York policeman's rendition a couple of days ago. Yesterday I heard Natalie Cole's version and the kindest thing I could say is that I was underwhelmed. Is this trend of singers giving their interpretations of the anthem acceptable. It worries me but maybe I'm in the minority.

I have enjoyed many of Natalie Cole's recordings in the past. However the caterwauling agony I listened to before the game was absolutely unbearable.

Just sing the damn song and don't get cute!

Sometimes, it's not "all about the music."

    Sometimes, it's about the lyrics.

It's a meaningful song, and we sing it because of what it symbolizes.

We don't need pop singers trying to turn it into a chart-topping pop hit. All they do is make a mockery of it. They take focus away from the lyrics and the meaning and instead put it on themselves.

Just sing the song the way it was meant to be sung.

Does anyone remember when Jose Feliciano sang the anthem at the World Series (I forget the specific year - maybe the late 60's or early 70's)? There was tremendous controversy at the time, and many of the fans booed while he sang it. He actually changed the melody in a few sections - it almost sounded "bluesy." Some people liked it. I remember buying the 45 record (yes, it was in the old days of the 45's)

I had heard from a smooth jazz station I listen to here in Florida, LOVE 94, that Natalie Cole was going to sing the National Anthem. Now I like a lot of her songs. But she didn't sing the Anthem. She screached it! She was loud and she absolutely sucked! She should leave the yelling to shouters like Anita Baker whom I can't stomach. All Natalie had to do was "sing" the Anthem, not yell it at the top of her lungs.

The pre-Salvation Army outfit wasn't cool either, much as she might have thought so. I hope she's not on drugs again.

It's OK to interpret it for your own style, it's another thing to murder it.

I like Jimi Hendrix's performance at Woodstock - the way he made the "rocket's red glare" noises - on a GUITAR!

It was bad but I've yet to hear worse than Anastacia's rendition at the All-Star Game (I think it was the All-Star Game). Not only did she screw up the words, but she sounded like...I don't know.

Natalie Cole sucked, okay. But who remembers Carl Lewis singing it at a Nets game about 5-10 years ago. Absolutely hysterical. He couldn't sing it at all. I mean at all! It's as if any of us got picked as a lucky seat or something to go out and sing it cold. Simply horrible. They showed it on Sports Center and Charley Steiner (of all people) was laughing so hard they had to take an unscheduled commercial break so he could get it together. 2 minutes later after the commercial, he was still laughing and still had tears running down his face. Truly priceless.

I love it best when someone from the military sings the National anthem. They get it. The schools or church choirs always do a nice job too. I think it is Wackywood that does not get it.
