....six teams won 100 games and six teams lost 100 games?

As of right now, the Yankees, Red Sox, Mariners, Braves, and Dodgers are on pace for 100+ wins and the Diamond backs could also easily win 100+.

The Devil Rays, Tigers, and Brewers should lose 100+ and the Blue Jays, Royals, and Padres might lose 100 also.

Is this competitive imbalance or WHAT?! Of course in reality, no team will win OR lose 100 because the season will be stopped in early September.

No, when six teams win 100 games and six team lose 100 games, there IS something wrong with baseball. In the 2000 season, ZERO teams won 100 and ZERO teams lost 100.

I THINK what has happened is that, in anticipation of a strike, a lot of the teams at the bottom who went into the season knowing they weren't going to contend anyway are cutting back on payroll even further and they're getting bounced pretty badly. I look at the teams that are on pace to win 100 games and the only ones that actually improved themselves over the offseason are the Yanks and Red Sox. That tells me the teams at bottom are worse than they were last year. Just a theory.
There are also a few teams in the middle who are undergoing some fundamental rebuilding projects (cleveland, toronto, now apparently Florida) There's no question MLB is entering some transititional phase, and it comes just two years after the 2000 season where there was more competitive balance than ever.

The Mets play in the largest city in America, and have won TWO titles in 40 years.
The Angels play in the 2nd largest city and are currently owned by one of the largest corporations in the world. They've never even won a playoff series.
The Cubs and White Sox play in the 3rd largest city in the country - when's the last time either of them won a title? And the Cubs are owned by a large corporation, to boot.

Large market teams can SUCK just as much as small market teams. It comes down to the willingness to spend money, and the intelligence to do it wisely.

Competitive balance is when 30 teams win 82 games and lose 82 games.

I wonder how many fans combined the 6 teams that lose 100 games will draw?

I'lll bet it will be less than 25% of the combined attendance of the 6 teams that win 100 games.

Given this attendance slump for the teams losing 100 games and the obvious lack of fan interest in their team and player memorabila, how can the losers afford to spend for winning players. It will get worse and worse each year until 6-10 teams go bankrupt.

Thanks for the info. I sure thought it would be lower, but this is only midseason. The disparity will get greater as the season gets along. The winners will draw a higher average and the losers a lower average attendance.

My point still stands. The winning teams have the cash from sttendance and merchandice sales to stay winners and the losers do not.

Of course you have to factor in the business acumen of the various owners and their willingness to and astuteness in spending money.
