Jim Kaat All Time Yankee Team.

    1b Gehrig
    2b Lazzeri
    ss Jeter
    3b Nettles
    rf Ruth
    cf DiMaggio
    lf Mantle
    c Berra
    P9lefty) Ford
    P9Righty) Ruffing
    P(Relief) Lyle & Rivera
    Mgr Torre.

Do you agree with Jimbo`s selections. If not why?

I almost agree, I'd go with Gossage in the Pen rather than Lyle (it's close though).

Torre? I might choose Miller Huggins, but you can't go wrong with Joe.

Actually if you had that team Joe Kerrigan could probably find a way to win a few games.

How about Mattingly as the DH?

If there was a DH & Mattingly was added to the team, wouldn't Donnie play 1B relagating the Iron Horse to the DH. It would be a little like this years Yankees, the Nick Johnson/Jason Giambi 1B/DH question. Lou was (by all accounts) a pretty fair defensive 1Bman, but Mattingly was arguably one of the best defensive 1Bmen to ever play the game.

This stuff makes for great discussion, eh?

Donnie Baseball as DH, I would buy that but Kitty Katt is a purist.

    JDPNYNY

I would take the Goose over Sparky, But Jimbo chose one Righty & one Lefty. So i guess i would stick with Sparky& his slider.

Aha, that's why he did it. In that case I agree with the best fielding pitcher in the history of baseball.

    One more thing...

...ask me again in about 10 years & I may replace Lazzeri with the current Yankee second baseman. We'll have to see if he even stays at that position long term. For now it remains Tony over Willie.

    Maybe McCarthy

over Torre as manager, but face it, the above team would need no manager, just the rest of the pitching staff...

He has a great list, but there is no way you really can pick only eight position players and four pitchers. A 25 man squad would make sure most controversies would be solved.

How can you leave Bill Dickey off the lteam? Look at his record.
The Yanks have had numerous great starters and relievers. One could make a great case for each of them.

I am not as fond of Miller Huggins as a manager as I am of Joe McCarthy, Casey and Torre.
It makes for great discussions though.

    Sheesh.
Looking at those names, and thinking of other baseball greats ( Yankees and otherwise), makes me hope that there IS baseball in heaven.

    As Yankee fans

we sometimes forget how lucky we are to be able to pick an all time team composed of Hall of Famers and have to leave off other immortals. How many other teams can do the same? Cards, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Giants? Maybe!! However, even these teams couldn't come close to the pinstripers!

What would the payroll be (in 2002 dollars)

    $250 to $300 million?

Steinbrenner would be a junior partner on that team...the players would be the principal owners!

Mantle was not a left fielder. Sorry, but you must choose between MM and JD.
