for rubbing it in Michaels07! I understand that YES televised that game and on MSG I asked who the announcers were. I was told they were White and Rizutto. However, I seem to recall that this game was on at a time that sportschannel was the network and that Mel Allen was one of the announcers. Do you have any knowledge of this or is it my imagination playing tricks on me. Perhaps there were two sets of announcers one for radio with White and Rizutto and one for tv with Allen.

I heard the voice of Bill White & the late great Frank Messer, White was joking that Phil was on the GWB heading home in the 9th inning. You know that guy Lil Phil, always anxious to leave and a man of many Phobias. Can you name one?
The Captain is right it was Butch Wynegar the old twin.Yanks had another ex-twin playing short, can you name him?

How well I remember Phil's phobias -

Lightening
Bugs
Snakes

One day he was interviewing someone in the dugout and one of the players put a fake snake around his neck. He jumped about 3 ft, and said "I'm on the AIR you huckleberry!"

One time during a thunderstorm, he ran out of the booth because he saw lightening. Then Messer would start saying "Phil come back. The lightening stopped."


Sometimes the cameraman would deliberately show a closeup of a bug, and Phil would say "Oh get the camera OFF that thing!"

I have gone to a local Applebee's to see the Yanks on Yes. By the way, in my opinion the golden years of Yankee announcers has to be the years that the real Voice of the Yankees Mel Allen was broadcasting and when Phil and Bill White were teamed together. Do you remember the time when they went on the air and Phil introduced himself as Bill White and turned to White and said this is Phil Rizutto? I can still visualize White laughing so hard I thought he was going to pass out! Those were the years that announcers like these two didn't see the need to analyze every move and every pitch and instead let the fan enjoy the game!

Yes i heard that gaffe by Little Phil, I really miss Rizzuto, wish he would do a spot appearance on Yes or WCBS for old times sake.

I also fondly remember those days of Phil and Bill White. They were just so entertaining, and I loved their conversations. I recall that time when Phil said "Welcome to Yankee baseball. I'm Bill White" - that was so funny! Thanks for reminding me of that. I can remember Bill White laughing so hard.

Remember when Phil would get so excited he would call the play before it was over?

"That's gonna be in there for a base hit.......no he caught it."

"They'll never get him..... son of a gun, they got him."

"He's out! He's SAFE! ! No, he's out!"

You're making me laugh just thinking of him saying those things. I can remember them as if they were yesterday. I had the pleasure of meeting Phil at a mall a few years ago and he was cordial and didn't get annoyed...later he sent me an autographed picture of him from his playing days. He was definitely one of a kind and a true Yankee!!

Damn, I remember Sparkey's Cy Young as if it were two or three years ago.

Damn, I'm getting old. But I have a hell of a lot of memories.

I was lucky enough to be AT that game.... in great lower-level box seats on the third base side - I could stare right into the Yankee dugout.
I'll never forget the stunned look on Dave's face.

I yelled so loud that day I had no voice for about a week.

I would if i could, but i don`t know if i will be physically able too.Just finishing two months of re hab. I came down with torn meniscus in both knees, Osteo-arthritis as an add on and like Bernie two sore shoulders &possible Rheumatoid Arthiritis and Diabetes all in the space of two weeks.I was unable to walk, without a walker or cane for a month, now thanks to a vigourous pool re-hab, some strong anti-inflammatory medication i can. That`s why i said to you sign up while you can still walk, The Golden Years are not so Golden You did mention you wanted to sign up with your son.A friend of mine did it 5 yrs ago and had the time of his life.I always wanted to do it and pose with Maris & Mantle & Myself in an outfield picture titled the M Boys.Don`t let time get in the way of your deams.

I have been living my life the last seven years or so as if each year would be my last.

Even tough I'm younger than you guys I have had my problems in recent years with a herniated disc in my lower back which sometimes, like today, limits my physical activities. I have a friend, however, who went to a Yankee fantasy camp a few years ago and had a ball. He went when Mickey was there and had lots of stories and pictures to tell. The album he showed me looks like a wedding album! I think it cost around $2,000 and was well worth it in his opinion.
Thanks for the invite, Andy. Who knows, I've been retired since last June and hopefully in the near future I'll be doing some traveling with my wife. We are currently waiting for another Yankee grandchild to arrive...probably in the next three weeks, and I'm hoping my son the expectant father will land a job...he lost his job at the end of January and hasn't had any success! Hope the therapy works out for you Michaels07. The pool sounds like good therapy but doesn't the ocean in the summer also help?

I did not see the replay, but I was watching it on Sportschannel when it was actually happening. YES must have been playing the old radio feed, because Mel Allen was doing the P-B-P on television that afternoon.

Although Mel Allen had been retired from regular Yankee broadcasts for at least 15 years by that time, he had come back to do the game on cable for a little while.

He even included the last out, complete with his call of same ("HE DID IT! A NO-HITTER!!") on that week's T.W.I.B., which, of course, he hosted himself.
