Said by a player in the final days of his major league playing days, in the first few days of October -- said with about two weeks to go in the regular season.![]()
"Baseball is a summer game. Let's play it in summer. Begin about May 15 and close about Sept 15, and you will have more interest while it lasts and the season will not peter out as it does now. The time for baseball has passed. People are taking interest in football now. Of course, most of the cities are farther south than we are and can stand it better, but I think they, too, would be benefited by a shortening of the playing season. We now play 154 games each, 14 with each club. If we played 13 with each club, that would make a schedule of 132 games, but I should be in favor of reducing still further and playing only 12 with each club, a total of 110 games.
That is as long a season as the public will attend."
