Will the Mets go for Gonzalez?

Seems like every Met fan wants this guy. I think Phillips is
waiting him out to see if he can get him at a discount.
This is turning into a game of CanYou Top This with the
    Yankees.

I don't see how it can happen unless Freddy opens the pocket book. Juan might take a back-loaded contract, but I don't think he'd take THAT much of a backloaded deal.

I know Cedeno and Weathers' deals aren't paying much in the first year, but the Mets have got to be pretty close to the restrictions for payroll Wilpon set out at the beginning of the off-season.

Unless they can unload ALL of Zeile's salary, I don't see Juan Gone coming to the Mets.

Juan Gonzalez really wants to play in New York, preferable the New York Mets.

Because the Yanks wouldn't meet his contract demands.

Thats because he wants to play for the Mets, not the Yankees.

Juan nixed the Yankee deal because of the contract extension. Add to this the fact that he was totally screwed up for the 2000 season while in Detroit.

After a full season with the Tribe, his divorce with Boras, and some maturing, I think he could handle NYC and the Mets. He would be a very valuable acquisition. And, with his friend Robbie and his original manager Valentine he would feel comfortable.

It seems as if the Mets would need to relieve themselves of Zeile's salary, but, if they can't, I would still go for him. He will be flexible on his contract demands.

I think everyone is expecting Juan Gone. If he doesn't come, it will be worse than last years A-Rod fiasco in the eyes of every Mets fan.

They definitely need someone to bat behind Piazza. I don't know if Burnitz and his K's will cut it.

Provided Alfonzo fully recovers from his back problem, Cedeno, Alfonzo, Alomar, Piazza, and Juan Gonzalez would be a VERY good 1-5.

That would be the best 1-5 in baseball easily with three hall of famers in a row and then two stars before. If Cedeno can get on base at a .390-.400 clip he'll score a ................load of runs, and if Alfonzo can NOT BE INJURED so will he.

I think the Mets top 5 in 1999 with Henderson, Alfonzo, Olerud, Piazza and Ventura was pretty amazing. That team had 98 wins in the regular season thanks to the top of that lineup, especially with the way Alfonzo produced in the 2 hole, and the way Ventura backed up Piazza with his career season. At one point in the season, almost every regular was batting about .300 . If we add Juan Gone, I think we will have a better starting lineup than the '99 team did.

I hope the mets do get Gonzo. That much sweeter when they lose yet again to the Braves or Yanks. But met fans are second to none in their
    pathetic desperation for a winner.

I think he would love to be on the Mets and I am sure they would love to have him, but it will probably come down to the owners opening their purse. I am doubtful that they will, but they really should. He would be an unbelievable addition to their lineup.

How is their desperation any more pathetic than our desperation for the Yankees to win?

Clacson: our desperation is weird: Yankees fans want to win but only if it's "fair" and "doesn't ruin baseball". Since the Yanks beat the mets convincingly in the subway series and in their house, all mets fans would sell their mothers to beat the Yanks. That's pathetic desperation.

I don't think Gonzalez is mentally ready for NYC. A few weeks of non-production, or extended injury(his back), and Gonzo is a huge story. Seen that one before.

I've been a Mets fan since 1990, when I was 7 years old. I just want to win a World Series. I'll be honest, I didn't even care about there being a Subway Series in 2000, but I knew there would be one. I don't care if we beat the Kansas City Royals in the World Series. I just want a world championship. The Yankees have nothing to do with it with me, except that I know they will be in the World Series because the bottom line is they are the best team in baseball.

Then again, as most of you should know from my posts here, I'm not an average Mets fan. For those of you who have never read any of my posts here, just read my signature.
