    Martinez, Pineiro suspended

    October 3, 2001

NEW YORK (AP) -- Seattle designated hitter Edgar Martinez and pitcher Joel Pineiro were suspended and fined by the commissioner's office Wednesday for their actions at Anaheim a night earlier.

Frank Robinson, baseball's vice president in charge of discipline, suspended Pineiro for three games for throwing at and hitting Anaheim's Troy Glaus in the eighth inning after a warning had been issued.

Martinez was suspended for two games for charging the mound during the sixth inning after being hit by a pitch from Lou Pote.

Both players began serving their suspensions Wednesday night against the Angels. Neither appealed the punishments, which don't affect the postseason.

Seattle manager Lou Piniella, who also was ejected, said Pineiro's three-game suspension doesn't impact his chance of making the playoff roster. He said Pineiro would play Saturday against Texas.

Martinez didn't want to talk about the suspension or his charging the mound, but acknowledged that he had seen replays of himself losing his temper.

``Not many people have seen me like that -- me either,'' Martinez said, smiling.

It was the first career suspension for both players. Martinez has been ejected three times in his career; the others were in 1996 and 1999 for arguing balls and strikes.

Pineiro had never been ejected before.

``When you play sports in a competitive way, you cannot try to take the aggressiveness from the players,'' Seattle left fielder Stan Javier said.

What a crock!!!!!!!! This kid only gets 3 games for hitting somebody in the head for revenge!!!!! Lily got 6 games!!!!!!! Frank Robinson is scum of the earth!!!! This jackass gives Lily 6 games and Pineiro ONLY gets 3. Tell me again that Frank isn't biased against the Yankees!!!!! What a jerkoff head this guy is!!!!!

Sssshhhhhh! This is *exactly* how they want us to react. Anger and vengefulness. We all know that each and every one of the players on the Seattle Mariners roster is a complete scumbag (well *I* know, at least) and we also know that those scumbags are favored by all the writers, umpires, and even some of the other organizations of MLB. Everyone wants to see Seattle dethrone the Yankees and this is only an example of that attitude.

Don't worry, though. Let Pinheado get off easy. When we slap him around for 6 runs in game 4 of the ALCS... you'll forget the suspension... and start looking forward to another trip to the Series.

Wow, when I saw that Pineiro got suspended I didn't know that he hit Glaus in the head. That's ridiculous. Lilly got 6 games for retaliation and just recently Mike Hampton got 5 games for hitting Randy Johnson in the arm.

    This is ridiculous.

Glaus was hit in the shoulder, not the head. Also Pineiro is a reliever so he will potentially miss 2 games during his 3 game suspension. Lilly was a starter so his 6 game suspension only cost him 1 start. So I guess 3 games for a reliever is kinda equal to 6 games for a starter.

FRANK ROBINSON = JEALOUS A$$HOLE!! Damn when your at the top, EVERYBODY wants to knock you down!! I don't think it should matter if you're a starter or reliever, you should get equal punishment!!! Retaliation is Retaliation!! ................, after we win the WS, I hope Joe socks him in the face!!

You sure about that? When I saw the replay, it looked like the ball careened off the helmet.

I thought the same thing...maybe it hit off the shoulder and ricocheted off the helmet?

Either way, Frank Robinson is the one of the biggest a-holes on the planet...I still cannot believe this arrogant SOB held a press conference in the middle of the Yankee clubhouse to announce that he had hung up on Torre, not the other way around regarding the Posada incident...this happened on Tuesday, 9/25 -- the first home game after the tragedy when everyone was getting ready to go on the field for the tribute ceremony...

it got so bad that his boss had to come down from eating dinner upstairs to shut his ass up...this guy has a definite problem with the Yankees, and it's grown very tired already...many people thought he should have been fined for what he did that night and I agree with them...

I'll give you that the Yankees have not been treated as fairly as other teams but I'm not sure it has anything to do with the Mariners being treated better...although I'll agree that charging the mound and only getting two games seems a little lenient compared to what Frank has been doling out...and I'll go along with the consensus that the MLB may want another team to win for the "good of baseball" although I don't think they care that it's Seattle, just anyone other than the Yankees...

But what I don't get is where do you get off saying that every player on the Mariners roster is a complete scumbag? What criteria are you using to make that statement?

The suspensions handed out are extremely inconsistent. One player rushes the mound and gets 2 games and another player could get 10. One pitcher hits someone in the head and gets 6 games and another gets 3. Cook was allowed and rightfully so to be with his wife after a miscarriage, but Bernie wasn't given the same consideration for his dying father.

I also disagree with the warnings. A pitcher can hit your player and than both benches get warned. That means the opposing pitcher can't retaliate and protect his players. That is grossly unfair. Let them retaliate and than warn both sides. I don't want to see anyone hurt, but what's good for the goose should be good for the gander.

They need to establish one set of criteria for everyone so that all players and organizations are treated the same. Right now that couldn't be further from the truth.

glaus was not hit in the shoulder - i've seen the replay several times - and it was his head.

same action should equal same suspension - simple as that.

When I saw the replay, it looked like he was hit in the head but all the reports say he was hit in the shoulder. I agree with your last statement though.

I'm having an argument with a Ms fan over at mlb.com
He/She was saying how Edgar and Joel knew what they did was wrong and took it like men, Unlike Jorge and the Yanks. Into which I responded, that they took the suspension cuz they got 2/3 games respectively. Posada/Lilly got 6 games!! Her argument was that Edgar didn't "assault/throw punches at" anybody!! Bumping an umpire is not exactly an assault or throwing a punch!! I'm so heated!! &po'd& DAMN MARINER FANS!! I hope we seriously kick their ass!!

looked like a head shot to me too, but what do I know? I only saw the replay once ......

as far as Robinson, I think he's awfully inconsistent ..... I can't help but think that the power has gone to his head a little .....

when you suspend Lilly 6 games and the other guy 3 it just seems stupid on the surface .....

I hesitate to say he has 'thing' for the yankees, but it sure seems that way ..

in the long run, it will only matter how we play in the post season and I think we have that covered pretty well ...the Yankees seem to reach down and find a way .... as a squad, these guys are the best ....

I have DirectTv and get the west coast games, was watching the Mariners Angels game and the announcers said during the replay that the ball hit Glaus' shoulder and bounced to his head.
