Did those old geezers actually play baseball? Whenever I see a picture like that I'm struck by how old the players look.

Looks like someone beat Jackie Robinson to the punch integrating the Majors. Who IS that guy in the back second from the left??

They were a tough bunch coming up rung by rung in the minors, which were not then part of the parent team's organization. The Cardinals, with Branch Rickey, were the first to do that.

Great pic Mitch. One question though - When I save your pix they don't save as JPG, but as PHP?
Then they don't display as thumbnails? How can I deal with this? Thanks.

Some players, actually were very dark, thanks to the sun and playing all those day games. Kinda looks like Mike Gazella, a utility IF, but I could be wrong.

(Interesting variation of the interlocking on the jackets, BTW!)

Strange, isn't it? Babe Ruth was only 32 here (younger than Tino), Lou Gehrig was 24 (younger than Derek), and Tony Lazzeri was 23.

I think the camera technology and photography of the era made everyone look darker than they were...

Let's see if we can figure out who he is...

Great picture, Gehrig! I was wondering if this picture was taken at the beginning of the year and whether the original had the names of the players? I only recognize Ruth and Gehrig.
Also, is that Huggins the manager, the little guy in the middle?

Received from a 1927 Yankee expert:

I have been presented with this photo for identification quite a few times before. It is not a photo of the 1927 Yankees, but of the 1926 Yankees. It is easy to identify why...

First, this photo contains numerous players not on the 1927 team. 2B Aaron Ward (front row, far left) was traded on January 13, 1927 to the White Sox for Grabowski and Morehart. P Sad Sam Jones (back row, third from left) was traded on February 8, 1927 to the Browns for Giard and Durst.

Also, it must have been taken early in the year (hence the jackets), and not later. The photo does not contain P Dutch Ruether, whom the Yanks claimed off waivers from the Senators on August 27, 1926. After the season, (October 19th) they sent P Garland Braxton (front row, fourth from left) and OF Nick Callup to Washington to complete the transaction.

Finally, the 1927 Yankees had seven players on their team for the full season that are not in the photo. IF Julie Wera, 2B Ray Morehart, C John Grabowski, OF Cedric Durst, P Joe Giard, P George Pipgras, and P Wilcy Moore.
