Does the amount of bigotry and chuck norris-ism in the 9/11 forum bother anyone else?

I understand that the days and weeks after 9/11 was a time of raw emotions and what not but isn't it our ability to keep our emotions in check and being rational in a time when we're being tested what separates us from the terrorists? If not then how can we condemn little Ahmed for strapping a bomb to himself after watching his family being vaporized by a missile while they were attending a wedding.
In that forum I see threads where people are chomping at the bits to see some carnage and death in the middle east, using smilies to describe acts of war as if it's a video game. We've discussed this before as the same thing happens when some lunatic commits a really disgusting and terrible crime and all people can do is pleasure themselves to thoughts of torture and revenge.
So then if we as a society harbor these vengeful monsters inside of us and they come out when we're pushed far enough then the only difference between us and the terrorists is that our situation hasn't gotten desperate enough because of poverty and oppression?

I tend only to look at the earlier threads which are more void of that.

That, and I must say this "Jimbo" fellow was a bit off the deep end.

Yes. It's hard to blame them, but yes.

Take them out!!!!!! If they're wiped off the face of the earth then can't do anything.
It's scary because the sentiment still exists and is being expressed.

I truly appreciate the gesture though, much of it is absolutely touching and chilling.

    awesome post Sam.

I remember having revenge on my mind at first as well. But when I settled down and to this day I am not very proud of having felt that taking life was something that was just so easy.

I've written many times about the weekend after 9/11, when I was working at the Family Center in the Lexington Avenue Armory. One thing that struck me at the time was that no one in there - whether families or volunteers - was talking about revenge or terrorists or America or any of those things. It was just about individuals - the individuals who had been lost and the individuals struggling with how to grieve for them. It was a whole lot more stirring than "God Bless America."

In certain respects it's worse. U.S. policy has several times dwarfed 9/11/01 in terms of human toll (9/11/73 to name a small example).

In theory, in a society that is less desperate, and has more political freedom, the fact that we tolerate it, and some of us applaud it, is quite damning considering the standards we want to apply to others.

We still should get revenge. Remember Japan? They attacked us, and what did we do? Beat the sh*t out of them and said "don't f*ck with us, b*tch!" I can guarantee they won't attack us again... ahh, the good old days when America had balls.

Seriously. We should instill brutal regimes that we can control to keep their societies in check. If that doesn't work, we should invade and occupy two of their countries while having our drones bomb other countries, perhaps kill over 1,000,000 people in the process. Maybe partner up with some regional nuclear power that keeps threatening to destroy things.

Yeah, something like that might work.

That's true, in the same way the world would be a better place if all humans were wiped off the map.

I am old enough to remember Harry Truman's presidency.

I truly admired him and was astonished at how well he handled the rigors of the job before him in finishing WWII after the passing of FDR.
Can you imagine the sheer terror that he must have felt is ascending to the presidency and than hearing that he had an Atomic Bomb at his disposal to end the war and thereby saving many millions of American and Japanese lives by bringing an early end to a war that Japan was simply not going to concede?
He made the tough decision and to my mind he was right.
I will never forget my visit to the Truman library and seeing his presidential desk with the Plaque "The Buck Stops Here" on top of it.

I have read many bios of HST and one of the most impressive things I took out of it was that he was a very volitile, quick to anger person (much like me). He handled it by, when he was angry, putting his feelings all down in writing and putting it away for a few days, rereading it and then usually discarding it. Truly a great way to handle unbridled emotions.

My point is that we wouldn't be normal if we didn't feel a great deal of anger over 9/11 and it wouldn't be normal if we weren't angered by the Muslim community. But if we reflected for a moment we would realize that there were many completely innocent Muslims killed in the World Trade Center blast; in the Pentagon crash and in the planes that were used in the terrorist assaults..
There are radical fringe groups in probably all religions, all races, all countries and all walks of life. That is just the way it is.
Education is the key to solving how we as a world society can live together.
Let's take a lesson from HST, get our anger out where no one can see it, reflect on it and then act in a sane and moral manner.

If your finger was on the button I don't think you'd be taking it so lightly or making such a joke. You can say it wouldn't be, but I don't believe that. Put the blood of those millions of lives, innocent or guilty, on your own hands and I'd like to hear what you have to say then.

This is why removing the PS was a bad idea. This type of discussion is just going to creep into JC no matter how hard you try to prevent it.
