    Yankees claim Steve Garrison

The Yankees designated Wilkin De La Rosa for assignment today in order to make room for Steve Garrison, who they claimed off waivers from the Padres, according to Mike Ashmore of the Hunterdon County Democrat (via Twitter).

Former Padres GM Kevin Towers had a hand in the Yankees' claim on Garrison, who was designated for assignment by San Diego on Monday. Brian Cashman told Chad Jennings of The Journal News that Towers "obviously was involved in that process," as someone familiar with the Padres' farm system. The left-handed Garrison struggled in his first Triple-A stint this year, but has had some success in the lower minors and will only turn 24 this weekend.

Local kid, makes sense. De la Rosa regressed pretty badly this year anyway.

I would point out that this reduces by one the available 40 man roster spots- DeLaRosa was a clear drop- and now that move has been used. There are only so many underperformers that you can axe.

Its not like Garrison is a top prospect. In fact, I think hes just a place-holder. Why leave DeLaRosas spot open... If there a player better than him that needs that spot, Garrison will get cut.

He definitely is not a top prospect. But I'm not sure he's just a place-holder. Kevin Towers may see something from him.

He is probably slightly better than Chad Huffman who was considered a similar Towers move.

Honestly this seems like a waste. I would've rather added Royce Ring as a second lefty for the ML bullpen. I suppose we can always cut Huffman and make that move.

Pwe Mike Ashmore, Steve Garrison never joined the Thunder…no word on if he’s injured or what it is.

I wonder if he's even eligible to join? Pettitte is on a rehab, so he could be added- but can the Yanks just add another minor leaguer to the roster in the middle of the playoffs?
