I can't not pick the Pats. The young defense is guided through their learning phase by one of the league's best offenses.

    1) Jets
    2) Patriots
    3) Dolphins
    4) Bills

1 and 2 will be neck and neck but...well...I'm a Jets fan.

I don't think you are allowed to say this considering they got rid of Thomas Jones and Washington who played a big part in that.

Prediction: The Bills will easily have the best ground attack in the AFC East.

This is one of those years where Jets fans think they are easily heading to the SB and something will happen where they end up 8-8 or 9-7.

    1) This happens frequently?

    2) I don't know any Jets fans who think they are easily headed to the Super Bowl. That's only a strawman that opposing fans and media haters concoct when they don't want to have a rational conversation and have to conceded that the Jets are pretty damn good. I've seen that unintelligent defense mechanism used by people more with this Jets team than any other team I can ever remember in any sport.

Hate to defend Jets fans, but the only thing I've heard them say this year is that they are one of a few (Colts, Jets, Pats, Ravens) AFC teams that could contend for the SB, and they'd be right. (Yes, I left out the Chargers and Steelers, very much on purpose). Last year only 5 AFC teams had a point differential of +100. New England, San Diego, Baltimore, New York, and Indianapolis. I immediately remove San Diego from consideration because Norv Turner is their coach.

In terms of the AFC East, I think the Pats and Jets finish with the same record and both make the playoffs. Who goes further probably comes down to who's playing better in January, Sanchez or the Pats secondary (McCourty, Butler, and Chung).

Easily? No way. Tomlinson is rejuvenated, Shonn Greene is a beast, and the o-line is still one of the best despite losing Faneca. Leon Washington was gone midway through the year, and I think a lot of feature backs in this league could have done for the Jets what Thomas Jones did on the field.

I didn't say it happens a lot, but it happens. The last time I've heard such brashness from Jets fans was in 1999. While this was ten years ago, I still remember their ridiculous expectations for Testaverde and company. I guess I just know a lot of Jets fans and their thinking is that a Super Bowl appearance for the Jets this year is a sure thing.

That said I personally think that the Jets are not going to do nearly as well this year as they did last year unless Sanchez steps his game up in a big way. Again, I personally think that Greene, and LT are big a downgrade from Jones, Washington, and Greene.

LT looked nice during the pre-season and I won't discount that, but he isn't the LT of old. Greene has potential to be a solid NFL running back.

I'm a Buffalo fan and call it homerism if you wish, but I'll take Spiller, Jackson, and Lynch over this version of LT and Greene any day of the week.

Seriously, you can't listen to WFAN for 20 minutes without some bozo, either on the phone or in the studio, complain about "all the cocky Jets fans" who think they're a shoo-in for the Super Bowl. Problem is, you almost never actually hear "all those" fans. The team is cocky but I'm not seeing it at all in the fan base. One occasional cocky call to a talk show is not a trend, it's the law of averages catching up.

In fact, especially among the 40-and-over group to which I belong (think Benigno), the decades of frustration have us so cowed that we're afraid to predict anything good, lest we piss off some humorless football god.

I think people are just conflating the team's attitude with the fans'.

I refuse to believe that you know "a lot" of Jets fans who think the team is a shoo-in for the SB. I'm a Jets fan, I know probably close to 50 people personally who are Jets fans, and not a single one is even remotely close to thinking that they're a shoo-in for the SB.

I think as a Bills fan you naturally dislike the Jets and their fans, and it sucks for you that they're a competitive team with an intriguing story and outlook for this season. It sucks that you have to hear a ton about a team that you actively dislike, that's annoying - we all experience the same thing with the Red Sox.

I am surrounded by Jets fans in my life and I literally know NOBODY who I would be willing to recognize as "a Jets fan" that thinks what you're saying you've found tons of. Unless of course you're counting the stripper in the tearaway #6 jersey who was bragging about how good Mike Sanchez was last weekend in between dances.

Most of the Jets fans I know already wrote off the season after cutting ties with Jones, Washington, & Faneca.

I don't naturally dislike the Jets and their fans. They honestly rank last in the AFC East to me in terms of teams I cannot stand. The Patriots and Dolphins rank ahead of them in those terms. I've actually been had a lot of praise for the Jets in my time here, and anytime I've been wrong I've eaten crow and manned up.

It doesn't matter to me if you believe me about knowing a lot of Jets fans. I do and I just shared what they've been saying during the off-season. They truly believe that the L.T., Cromartie, Taylor, and LT signings have put them over the top.

I don't think it's the Jets fans who are convinced they are winning the SB this year, it's the players. I've heard more than a few of them say that it's SB or bust this year.

And then you have Cromartie comparing him and Revis to Jordan and Pippen and saying that they are the Miami Heat of the NFL (which is a better comparison).

I think that is where more of the "hate" is coming from. Not so much the fans cockiness, but the players. But hey, I would assume most fans want their teams to be confident.

On the contrary, most of the Jets fans I know are very wary of the hype. Many of them are all like "Yeah, everyone is saying we're going to contend but it seems just as likely that everything blows up and we go 8-8".

Jets are good team what stops them from being a great team is sanchez, still young and learnig he has the weapons, 2 good WR and s good slot WR, Stacked at RB's, i trully believe LDT will somehow regain some form not like he was in 07 but he will be explosive. the defense everyone knows so dont need to tal about them. if mark makes less msitakes than last year they are a 11-5 team but not a super bowl team

If you were in the NYC area to listen to/watch the local media, you'd see that the fans and team are being widely lumped together and that there is in fact a big backlash going on against "those cocky Jets fans" — despite the fact no one seems to be able to actually locate these swarming hordes of blowhard braggarts.

The epicenter of this campaign appears to be WFAN, which, surprise surprise, carries the Giants and is the rival station to the one that carries the Jets games.

As an aside, people are acting like it's something new and foreign for a player/coach to say that their only goal is to win the Super Bowl this year.

There are a couple of Jets on the defensive side of the ball that talk (I'm looking at you, Bart), but they're not going around saying they're going to win the Super Bowl.

All I've heard is that winning the SB is their one singular goal, and some of them aren't afraid to acknowledge it.

I think people are reacting negatively to it because the Jets have been doormats for years and this group is completely disassociating itself with that, and on purpose. Fans/media aren't ready to "let them" do that - they feel like it's THEIR (the fans/media) decision as to whether or not the team is allowed to be anything other than the Same Old Jets. ("You're not allowed to say your goal is to win the Super Bowl! Does this coach have any idea that he's coaching the Jets?! What a joke, he sure runs his mouth and is cocky.")

Sanchez, Sanchez, Sanchez. Talk about the SB all you want, 'Miami Heat' this, 'soon to be champs' that - this season is in Mark Sanchez's hands. And let's be honest, his season on a whole, was below average. Awful in the regular season and much better in the playoffs. But nowadays, you need a very good QB for your team to be worth a damn. They can be the 2000 Ravens on defense but it won't get them far if Sanchez doesn't improve big time (he needs to improve to get to Trent Dilfer's level). It's a passing/quarterback/offense league now and I don't think you can win if your QB has the 28th best passer rating. If he takes a big step forward they might talk all the way to Dallas.
