Thread: Weight-Loss Club, Fall 2010

    Re: Weight-Loss Club, Fall 2010

I've had this whole week off from school because of Labor Day/Rosh Hashana, and I've gone out to eat for dinner every day this week sooo that hasn't helped my diet much. And today is my bday so once Monday rolls around I'm gonna start seriously watching what I eat.

I'm taking an aerobics class this semester, and my instructor said we'll be doing a wide array of things like kickboxing and Zumba, so I'm excited

Right now I'm around ~133 and pretty satisfied, but I'm going to see if I can get down to ~125 by the end of the semester.

    Re: Weight-Loss Club, Fall 2010

Kind of a mixed bag for me this weekend. Friday I ran a few miles in the AM, then hit the gym in the evening. Saturday I had a nice 12 mile mountain bike ride, and this morning ran 5.25 miles.

On the other hand, I ate a little bit lousy at times the last few days (parties and such), so I'm not expecting too much progress this week.

This is pretty much where I've been at for the last couple of months...being "good" during the week, and bad on the weekends. I don't terribly mind it, as I'm pretty happy with where I'm at right now, but would like to see some more forward progress eventually.

Week 1 yields 1.5 pounds, down from 188 to 186.5. First week is always easy though....there will be a week or two where eating and exercise goes perfectly and no weight comes off. I hate those weeks.
    Let the kids play.

    Don't, those aren't bad weeks.

It's important to maintain lean muscle mass when losing fat weight. Losing weight isn't enough, have to lose the right weight.

Btw, on the left under my av is a little green thing. When i mouse over it it says "Bozidar is off the scale".

I want to lose at least 45 lbs between the last Yankees home game (which I heard will be September 26 which sucks because I just paid my playoff invoice) and Opening Day.

I lost 45 pounds in seven months about two years ago, but the final 10-15 pounds is where I left off.

    As i updated on facebook:
So, I did a lap around my block with the dog, took about 12.5 minutes. Drove the car around and figured out it was .6 of a mile. Went and did another .6 and finished the whole lap in 24 minutes. the round trip probably inclines/declines about 60 feet.
Going to try to do this at least 3 times a week, more if I can. S...adly, just can't do it with the kids - they make it so much harder to focus.

Also, my belt is feeling a bit loose..

Good work, Boz. It's a daily battle but perseverance and some others doing the same thing helps. I'm walking 2 to 3 miles per day and I'd love to do some light jogging but I know my knees won't let me do that on a regular basis. For now, I'm just sticking to moderate exercise and 1800 to 2000 calories a day, with increasing amounts of fiber. Last night I forced myself to eat a very light dinner, about 400 calories, and after about 20 minutes I wasn't hungry anymore....had a 100-calorie snack at 8PM and that was good for the night.
    Let the kids play.

    Re: Weight-Loss Club, Fall 2010

Awesome job Boz - keep it up! Just curious....why would you want to exercise with your kids? Aren't they pretty young?

I run with my boys and we did start them early - they wanted to do it and it's def fun but I couldn't imagine doing it with really young kids.

Now we run (all 5 of us) some road races together such as the Turkey race in Manchester on Thanksgiving and the Santa's run in Glastonbury in Dec. It's such a blast running with the kids and I def think it's a good example for them to see you exercise, whether it be running, walking, going to the gym, etc.

Are you running or walking the 5k at Travelers tomorrow? I'm pretty sure I'm running it. It starts at 2pm I think. Do you know about it? I wasn't sure how widely publicized it is.

    Merry f'ing Christmas

Yeah, they're pushing the 5k pretty hard here. I'm not quite ready for that yet Hopefully next year i'll be jogging it, where as this year i'd be looking for somewhere to sit for a bit after the first mile.

Yes, the kids are quite young which is the major problem. I may start walking with Son #1 though, he's 10, but his other issues may also make it difficult. We'll see, it's all a work in progress

The Travelers 5k is a walk or run. I'm sure you can walk it.

Since I waited too long to register for the 5k, the fee is now up to $40-

Don't be too sure. Walked 1.2 miles last night and I was pretty close to done for.

Why don't you just take the time for yourself. It seems like you do an awful lot around the house and with the kids, why not just make exercise time something you do for you.

Which will benefit them in the end.

Because the 10 year old is overweight too, and if we dont get him moving in the right direction, wtf is the point of me being healthier?
I get where you're coming from, maybe I'll suggest that Mom takes him on the two laps around the block walk while I watch the little ones. That way she gets to go for her walk, and she does better with Son #1's issues than I do anyway.

At least for starters, until you can build yourself up to have more endurance.

Just remember to carry the walking on throughout the winter...it's tough but many people give up their outdoor exercise in the winter. You just have to bundle up. Obviously if it's icy out etc you can't walk but you know what I mean. It sucks when it gets dark at 4pm though.

I was thinking about exactly this last night. It was around midnight when I was walking, so it was a little chilly out. I was sweating a great deal, so I didn't mind the chill - but I did start to wonder what it would be like in the winter. I imagine i'll still be sweating, but also that walking would be that much harder with all the extra layers on.

To be honest, I can't say i'm optimistic that i'll be getting out there in the winter.

You must have a gym where you work - that would be great if you could work out indoors (even though i hate working out inside).

yeah, it's across the street by the old state house. The problem is that working out during work hours doesn't work for me. It's complicated, but I just dont have time during the day for it, and coming back into hartford is pretty unlikely.

There is a new Y near us which might offer some alternatives, but their membership prices are through the roof.

Yeah, Y prices are nuts. I can understand staggering membership prices based on income, but the one in Hartford wanted $60/month. For that kind of money I could join NYSC (my dream gym), and end up with a MUCH better experience. $60/month is ludicrous.

EDIT: You live in New Britain, right? Big Sky has two nice locations in Newington and New Britain. Their prices are also much more reasonable, and they offer plenty of classes.

EDIT 2: Congrats on your weight loss thus far!

There might be something to this beer diet thing. I had 4 Blue Moons at the stadium last night and basically fasted otherwise from 6 last night until 9 this morning, and I was down 7 pounds haha!

*Truth be told, I didn't weigh myself yesterday and all that dropped weight was a result of ending the water retention from eating too much Chinese food over the weekend.

I dont get sick, but boy does my food budget go up.

I'd have to like vegitables a whole hell of a lot more to go low- or no-carb.

Healthy food is expensive, and if you want organic it's even a lot more. We have some small market options here, like Aldi, that provide good produce at low prices with good sales. We also have weekly farmers markets where the food is cheaper and fresher than what you pay in the supermarkets. I buy what's in season but as soon as late fall comes everything is imported, making it more expensive and not as good. Still, it's better to spend the money in the produce isle than on most other things...if you want to feel better and live longer.

Check the Sodium content at Aldi vs other supermarkets. You'll find out why it's "low prices". I probably couldn't even buy fresh produce there.

The upset face was mostly that my name is the one associated with that plan

Today, I'm so depressed, I stayed in bed most of the day and have only eaten some pita chips and some truffles. In the bed. Watching season 2 of thirtysomething.

oh sorry I don't really know what my problem is...just can't seem to get motivated - at leat you have an excuse -I'm not even depressed!

sorry about being down. if it makes you feel any better, you still probably ate less calories than me today. I'm not a big eater (I just eat bad stuff) but it seems like right before I start a diet, I need to be gross and overeat for some idiotic reason.

the worst part is, I was really good for a week including exercising and got really sick and then unmotivated. I really would not rather meet his whole family at my heaviest weight ever but what can you do...he doesn't care, but i do.

I get where you're coming from, maybe I'll suggest that Mom takes him on the two laps around the block walk while I watch the little ones. That way she gets to go for her walk, and she does better with Son #1's issues than I do anyway.
I feel like I'm missing something, but can't you do something active with the 10-year-old that benefits you both? Exercise doesn't have to be as boring as walking the block by yourself. Messing around with a football/basketball/soccer ball/whatever will probably be more enjoyable and beneficial.

Just wanted to mention that there are quite a few healthy foods that are quite cheap. You can knock out breakfast with a bowl of oatmeal for less than what it would cost to get something off a fast-food value menu. Whole wheat pasta isn't too pricey either. Eggs and natural peanut butter are also extremely affordable and satiating to boot. (I know some people still think eggs and PB are unhealthy, but that line of thinking is pretty outdated.) The point is that you can eat healthy without reworking your budget if you do it right.

Also, you can grow your own vegetables if you have the space and time.

    I'd work out with Vicki.

I upped the weight on the "Shoulders And Arms" routine today. Holy crap, I can barely lift them to drink my protein right now.

    You'd probably kick my ass.

I need to get into a routine of crunches and sit ups after I run. I'm so out of the habit of doing that.

Want to lose weight, or just maintain it?

Get a road bike and start turning those cranks. I have been riding about 150 - 200 miles per week (usually ride 4 days a week) and I am in better shape now than I was in college. I am 50 years old.

The other two days, I'll lift weights (don't do legs during cycling season). I'll usually take one day off with no exercise. During the winter, I'll do more lifting and cross-country or alpine skiing.

I also maintain a pretty strict diet. No take out, processed or fast food, whatsoever.

One thing I've learned over the years is that a gym is not vital at all for getting into good shape.

There are many ways to workout, but the easiest and most convenient way I've seen is to use band training. You can buy a 1/2 inch band to start for about $20, and, if used properly, will kick the living crap out of you. All you need is a room and some know-how.

Here's a link to a decent article that describes the benefits, gives instructions and workouts, and provides a link where to buy them. It's ideal if you have kids, because the workouts only take 20-25 minutes. Incorporate this with some cardio and you'll be good to go.

    Good luck.

i asked someone this morning, and it looks like it starts in downtown hartford. Probably up by the phoenix building or something. Goes across the river, down east river drive. Over the bridge, not sure what it's called - rt 15. then up either 91 or some side road there back up to the start area.
