    September Minor League Thread

Minor league playoff month, and the Yankees top three minor league teams are in the hunt.

The Yankees' minor league affiliates in the International League (Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, AAA); the Eastern League (Trenton, AA); and, the Florida State League (Tampa, A+) are all in contention for the league championships in their respective leagues.

I'm personally excited about Trenton because of their elite pitching staff going into the playoffs led by Betances and Banuelos.

Royal Flush: Hughes, Sabathia, Betances, Brackman, Banuelos.

add in Warren, Brack and rumors of Andy making rehab starts in Trenton and it's scary good on the mound.

Yankees are sending Austin Romine, Brandon Laird, Corban Joseph, George Kontos, and Craig Heyer to the Arizona Fall League this fall.

Any timeframe to the Pettitte rumors? Could he be making a rehab start this weekend for Trenton?

Romine and Laird are surprises to me. Those guys seem worn out and would seem to need a break.

I guess Laird makes sense if he's going to get time in the of.

I guess they could just be showcasing them as well.

his overall time frame seems to be about 2 weeks away with him throwing another bullpen and a simulated inning today. if that frant is right this weekend is unlikely, probably middle of next week before he made a start? rather they take it slow and let it heal all the way then try to get him back and have another setback.

Mattingly is the manager. I hope he's managing them when Laird and Joseph get September callups next year too !!

Question: Is it conceivable that Montero, Betances, Banuelos, Brackman, Romine, and Sanchez could all end up in the Top 100 List this year? All minus Romine are enjoying very good (Montero) or breakout seasons (the rest). As a follow up, which if any of these prospects do you believe to have All-Star caliber potential? Thanks for your time!
Jim Callis: Conceivable, yes. This time of year, I get a lot of questions about who will make the Top 100 and where various farm systems rank compared to other systems, and I'll be honest--it's hard to give precise answers without spending hours sorting through every organization. Montero is the easiest guy in that group to label a future all-star. I can say the other guys have that potential, but I want to see Romine perform better in the minors, whether Banuelos can maintain his improved velocity, whether Betances and Brackman can stay healthy and keep throwing strikes, and how Sanchez produces against better pitching. But yes, you can dream on all those guys.

I've heard he is probably the best defensive catcher in the system overall. However, he needs to make some strides offensively next season as he's a fallback option to other higher ranked catching prospects like Murphy and Sanchez.

Thomas Kahnle continues to impress, picking up his first save for SI with 2 scoreless innings last night, including 4 Ks. What about Gabe Encinas? Did he get into any games this summer after signing?

I have Andy throwing a very intense session on 09/05. So it follows that he will make a start for Trenton on 09/09 or 09/10.

Laird to the AFL makes sense, as he probably will play exclusively in a corner OF slot. Hope he gets 20+ games in out there. Romine bothers me, as he is all worn down. Playing in the hot sun after a long season as a #1 Catcher is not the greatest way to take some time off. Hope this changes, with someone like Higgy going instead.

I read on RAB that the Yanks are also probably going to be sending an additional three pitchers that will be announced at a later date.

I'm trying to think of pitchers (starters) who did not pitch many innings that would need to go. ManBan would be a candidate, but I read somewhere the other day that a Mexican team has his rights for a few years, so he can only pitch there in the Winter.

Bleich would be a candidate, but I doubt he will be anywhere near healthy by the AFL season.

JB Cox could probably use the innings, but I wonder if he is really in the plans, or just org. fodder.

if Dan Kapala is healthy he would be a candidate, as his season was cut short at ~60 innings. I believe this was the 1st season he was a starter, after pitching out of the pen since 2007, when he was drafted (late round -like 45 or so).

Sean Black may be a candidate - he was healthy the whole year, but logged about 12 innings, so he might have something in the tank if they want to get him closer to 150.

I wonder if Brett Marshall will go, or will they protect his arm. He only had ~ 80 innings this season.

Manny Barreda? Should be interesting to see who they pick.

As I recall, you are only allowed to send one guy who finishes the season below AA ball, so that probably eliminates most of the guys mentioned.

I suspect they will send non-prospects like Wordekemper, Cox, etc.- why beat up and mentally deflate guys with a real chance at a big league career in that hitting haven.

True but he toe up AA and is likely tiring a bit while facing different style pitching. I'm sure hell get past the small sample.

I find it's funny that Laird this season batting line is very similar to his 2008 season.

    2008: .273/.334/.498 in 454 AB (low-A)
2010: .276/.334/.480 in 510 AB (AA and AAA)
