    Droid: Enlighten A Recent Convert

I got a Droid X about two weeks ago and I love it, but I have no clue what I'm doing with it.

I want to do all sorts of neat things, but I have no idea where to start, so any advice, tips, etc would be great to hear from more experienced users.

I'm interested in even the most basic things, as I have no clue what is even considered basic.

Synching, backing up, Apps, etc. I'm a blank canvas.

Two things to show how novice I am:

    1) I went to ESPN's podcast page and hit download on a podcast and it opens up an internet window and plays it directly without saving. If I migrate away from the window, it closes out the podcast. Just to be clear, I didn't hit "Play", I hit "Download". How do I download the file directly to my Droid? My BB Storm used to ask me if I wanted to save it, and then name the file, which doesn't happen with my X.

    2) Are there any must have apps that I'm missing? I downloaded most of the "top" free ones already, but are there any under the radar that I should definitely get?

Also, what does everyone use the 7 homescreens for? I like the options, but I can't figure out much to do with 3-4 of them.

What can I do with this new toy I have that will keep me entertained for the next 18 months?

Get an emulator and play pokemon. Set up a google voice account so you can get your voicemails as text. Use Swype.

What does it mean to "get your voicemails as text?"

Swype was one of the first things I turned on, and holy smokes is it amazing.

    What does it do?

Also, the camera absolutely sucks for taking pictures in anything other than daylight. Is there anything that can be done about that?

Get the apps to make annoying sounds - my friends have an air horn, gunfire and a vuvuzela. I don't have one, but I remember a party awhile back where everyone was making annoying sounds at the same time.

Why when I attempt to download a podcast does it not let me save it? Instead it opens it up in a new window and plays it, but if I migrate away from it the play stops.

It's like it chooses to stream it instead of download it. Why can I not download the file and listen to it on my phone instead of off the website? Am I doing something wrong?

Astro is a file manager tool; it just makes navigating through your various documents, pictures, ringtones, etc... very easy.

Additionally if you ever decide to grab a version release early it's much easier to save the update.zip file to the root directory.

If you set up google voice (voicemail), instead of having to dial a number to listen to your voicemails, or paying verizon to get visual voicemail, you get free visual voicemail. When someone leaves a voicemail on my phone, I get a text from google with the contents of the voicemail transcripted into text form, and If I want I can play the voicemail through audio optionally.

Ok, I just set Google Voice up and love it (I tested by calling and got the text), but for some reason whenever I try to get to the homescreen of the App it tells me that it's detecting my call settings, and won't stop (it never gets a result).

How the heck do I fix that? I tried reinstalling and uninstalling, but no change.

Do you go to the website on your computer as well? I remember when I set it up that you couldn't do it all on your phone.

Use widgets they are your friends. Also if you don't like the look of the droid x UI try downloading launcherpro (which I am currently running) or adw launcher both are highly customizable.

Edit: If you like to download podcast and subscribe to audio feeds you should try listen from google its a really good app.

    Wow, Listen is perfect!

Only problem is that when I try to download a podcast it works, but when I go to play it an error message appears. Basically I can't listen to any podcasts I download.

Ok, Google Listen totally f*cked my phone up. I can't play any media through any apps now, all I get are error messages - Listen, Pandora, and Youtube to name a few.

I tried Uninstalling listen but it didn't work.

What's the next step to try and get my phone working?

probably a factory reset, and stay in the Google market to prevent shoddy software apps from overwriting device drivers etc.
