If not for his recent slump, I'd vote for Brandon Laird. Gary Sanchez had a great year in the GCL. My vote is for him.

Sanchez has really not played as much as one should to be player of the year. Other, Dellin has a fantastic case himself. And Manbam may also have one, unless he struggles again in AA.
Personally, I am very impressed with what Melky Mesa has done, as well as what Laird, Suttle, and a slew of pitchers. And of course don't forget the season that Montero has put together.
Tough choice. I think the one who stood out though, who had a consistent season all year long, played at a full season team, and also was completely unexpected, was Alba at AAA.
He's my choice.
My vote is for Laird. He is still hitting around .290 with 23 HRs and 90 RBIs. I am very excited about Sanchez and his strong start but he only played from mid June until seasons end. Laird did it all season. I'm also high on Betances and ManBan but couldn't vote for them because they did not play the full season either.
Nice topic choice.

Laird
I second that notion, Laird's been killing it all year, Montero was sucky the 1st half, Romine cooled off, and Betances/Sanchez/ManBan only had half years.Originally Posted by kongull

Player of the Year: Brandon Laird
Comeback Player of the Year: Dellin Betances
Breakout Star: Gary Sanchez
montero
laird hasn't raised stock all that much tbh.
this question is kind of vague though. what standards are we using? a guy having the best statistical year in the minors doesn't actually contribute to the big league club's win total, and the only way guys in the minors do anything productive is through raising their evaluation i.e. value.

I think most people are voting on minor league performance. If we were voting for the most pleasant surprise or the prospect that did the most for himself this year Betances would definitely be the choice.Originally Posted by awy

Top pitcher is a tough call as there are so many good choices including Phelps, Warren, Nova, Stoneburner, ManBan, and Betances. I'd probably go with Nova since he has produced at a similar level of play as the other guys and has done it at AAA all year. Although if not for a smaller sample size Betances or ManBan for that matter would an easy choice.

I disagree slightly.Originally Posted by McMoose

Lots of comeback player of the year award nominees. Don't forget about Brad Suttle if he keeps this up til the end. Betances would get my vote for that and player of the year quite frankly.
Laird probably wins but Phelps should be in the discussion. 145 IN 2.59ERA 1.10 WHIP 8.1K/9. Man Ban and Dellin have been more dominate in their shorter runs.

Top 3 from pitching would be Stoneburner...Betances...Phelps
Top 3 hitting would be Laird...Montero...Adams because he was flying before the injury.
Laird is easy to set apart in the hitting but the pitching I cant manage to pull one aside as a clear fave.

What does Noesi have to do to get some love in this thread?
42 is the answer
AJ Burnett=Jaret Wright 2.0
Adam Dunn has less value than Drew Henson - Nome
CF's better than Granderson: Jacoby Ellsbury (.301, 70 steals), Scott Posednik (.304) - Curmudgeon

I have taken so long deciding, but I will have to say Phelps or Stoneburner. It is so close! I think Phelps, but it is so close.
I understand the Laird and Betances answers. They are not too far behind either.
The NYY ML Player of Year Is...
A guy who may one day become a Yankee Player that 90% of NYYFans.com forumers will bash constantly.
If I had 3 wishes... One of my wishes would be to make a select few of you Pirates Fans.
how is a 20 year old catcher in AAA with an 850 OPS not the ML player of the year

Ummm- because of this:Originally Posted by DRobertsonNYY

Plate discipline has vanished in the second half, not to mention the .549 OPS in the second half of the season.

that would be jesus

My bad.Originally Posted by DRobertsonNYY

Abby gets my vote. Not a prospect but his numbers before the call up were off the charts.
Laird, Warren, Albaladejo. All tied for 1st in my book
I vote laird for Position player of the year
If there were more categories I would go:
Pitcher of the year I vote Noesi or alby
Breakout player sanchez
comeback/surprise player definately Betances

All those picking Laird because he was so solid all season long - please consider the above link. He has struggled big time in AAA. And these stats are after a super 1st 4 games, where he hit something like 8-18, with both his HRs, 2 doubles, and at least 5-6 RBIs. He has really been ice cold his last 18 or so games.
This puts a damper on his season, albeit only a small one. IMO, Laird qualifies more as a player to win the breakout award, but falls short of the MVP award to Alby.
Mesa probably beats Laird in the breakout award category also.
Just my opinion.

I'm not saying Stoneburner was/is my pick but I'm surprised he didn't even get a mention.

Montero.
.288/.357/.504/.860 with 30 2B and 18 HR in 417 AB.
As a 20 year old catcher in AAA, no less. He's also the top prospect in the system, so he'll get it for the PR too.
Pitcher of the Year - Ivan Nova
Comeback Player of the Year - Dellin Betances
Newcomer of the Year - Gary Sanchez
The only pick I disagree is Pitcher of the Year. My pick is Adam Warren.Originally Posted by mvk112

My point is Montero started off poorly and Laird has been useless since his promotion (and was pretty bad in April too if you wanna split hairs). To discount Montero's season because of a month or two, in favor of Laird, who has also had a couple of terrible months, doesn't make sense.Originally Posted by Matsui55
If my stats are correct, Laird had an OPS of 793 in April. That is not terrible.Originally Posted by BennyTheJetRodriguez

nor is it great, but yeah, bad example. The point is if people are going to make a bid deal about Montero's first 140 ABs, they can't just ignore Laird's final 100+ ABs.Originally Posted by b_joseph

.288/.354/.505 from a catcher
.280/.337/.484 from a corner IF
Thats not even mentioning age and level.
If we aren't mentioning age and level, I like these numbers:
.331/.395/.558 from a catcher (Sanchez)
... but yeah, Montero's are more impressive given where he is.
clear, concise, correct
IMO Montero deserves even more credit for not only adjusting to AAA after 2 months, but dominating at that level.
Diplomacy is the ability to tell a man to go to hell so that he looks forward to making the trip
I think the difference is that everyone expected Montero to do what he did ( which is crazy considering his age but thats Jesus for you ). Where as Laird wasnt expected to completely wreck AA ball.Originally Posted by BennyTheJetRodriguez
Montero is the better player/prospect/talent. But for me, I'd give my vote to Laird because of where he was in Sprng and where he will be come Fall.

RAB posted their (or Mike Axisa's) "2010 Minor League Awards" today. PotY went to Laird; hitter went to Jesus and pitcher to Stoneburner.
http://riveraveblues.com/2010/09/201...-awards-34792/

As somebody pointed out earlier in the thread, Liard's season wasn't all that different from what he did at Charleston. Its not the most improved award anyway. Player of the year should go to the guy with the best numbers, and as far as I can see, that's Jesus.Originally Posted by b_joseph
