Well, he is still living a bit of that awsome start but once hitters saw what he was doing he has struggled a lot. I would say that he is a 4.50 ERA pitcher at this point who doesnt give you lenght.

I remember watching Hughes in Trenton and he had a devastating curve ball, who know what happened.

His stuff looks great, actually. He's just seemingly incapable of mixing pitches effectively. I don't know if it's a strategy to come out throwing all FB's and then changing it up as he moves through the order 2 and 3 times, but you have to be prepared change the game plan within an AB.

Yeah, thats why you dont move starters with 3 + pitches to the pen where they only use 1 or at the most 2.

    Great? High velocity yes.
But he is not getting any swings and misses of the fastball and all of his curves were out of the zone except one to Bautista where he got lucky he didnt crush it.

I hope you are right about the gameplan but he should have made some adjustments after seeing how no one swung and missed off his first 15 fastballs.

Whatever, he used the curveball in the pen. And Hughes maybe helped win the World Series last year in the pen. i think blaming management on Hughes getting worse at throwing his curveball is kind of silly, why would it not be on Phil to execute his own pitch that he came up throwing

Thames is the best signing Cashman has made in years...more so than any star because Thames wasnt expected to be as good as this.

Velocity and break, his FB has been superb. The problem is that he is throwing only that pitch, and they are timing it. He only threw 2 curveballs, and got an out with one of them.

I dont agree with that. Guys have gone to the pen to find themselves at the start of their careers plenty of times....the issue is when you are tossed back and forth.

Yeah, dont mistaken by dissapointment in Hughes that 1st inning as a sign of throwing in the towel, that "2009 Yankees will win this game" comment was one of the dumbest things I have read in a while.

He threw it in the pen but when you are in the pen you might use your curveball 3-4 times per outing and comapared to starting in the long run you are really not using it enough and you could lose the feel for it since its a feel pitch.

Thats ridiculous. I guess David Robertson is eventually going to lose the feel for his curveball in the pen

Come on, Phil just needs to throw it better. The world isn't conspiring against him

I see what you're saying but signings have to be judged in the context in which they were made. Too many people heap praise when a guy turns out better than expected (like Aaron Small) and bash the GM when a signing which was originally a good one turns out to be bad because the guy doesn't perform.

except it wasn't a good pitch last year for him either. or, honestly, the year before.

frankly it hasn't been the plus pitch that helped him attain what his prospect status was since 2006 and, while I don't like all blame shifting that happens whenever a young player underperforms, the team did play with his arm angle/release point and grip after that year for some reason and he's really never gotten the quality back all the way since. it's probably fair to wonder if team actually did botch something here.

Doesnt Robertson throw his curve like 40% of the time? I think Phil threw his cutter and fastball almost 80% of the time from the pen, I dont feel like looking it up now but comparing Hughes and Robertsons use of the curve from the pen is not a good comparsion IMO.

Now, we see this: changeup to Overbay. He's pitching to scouting reports too heavily I think. Overbay is slain by the changeup. Hughes has fed them to him every time they play the Jays. But to no one else. This needs to change, and he needs to broaden his approach to everyone.

The scouting report also says that you have to pitch away to Bautista, and that's what Hughes did and forced a weak flyout. Why wouldn't you listen to a scouting report?

You can't be serious. So the team should protect phil against his own propensity to throw the curveball 2 less times per outing... or something... Im sure Phil could throw it in side sessions or warming up. I have never heard anyone make this kind of a weird argument before. He just has to execute at some point

Moving him to the pen eventually helped them win the world series and has been an important starting point for the careers of mutiple successful starting pitchers in the past. If Phil lost his curveball, its because he's doing something wrong (I guess either himself or some mechanical change made ages ago)

    11 pitches to A. Eff. Hill ???!?
The Yankees are now 206-1 when Mariano has been asked to protect a four-run lead.
