It seemed like this was the best place to post this link to Mr. Herbert's great column:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/24/op...24herbert.html

I loved how Herbert's father explained that Hank Thompson and Bobby Thomson were not related--a great and wise answer. The comments are full of great baseball memories from readers, too.

If anyone has there own baseball/family memories to share, please do!

Wexy, glad you enjoyed it. I wanted to post this in "Yankees: Out of Play" because I'm not sure this forum gets a lot of traffic, but realized that this forum was where it belonged as it's only indirectly related to the Yankees (WS-different team, same result, lol.)

Great article from the TIMES. I grew up in the 1950's and remembered those years with great feeling. Yes, it's true that summers were spent playing baseball and imitating your favorite players....mine were all on the Yankees. However, when Thomson hit the HOMER we all rejoiced since we hated the Dodgers and wanted to see them beaten. Of course, the Yanks won the WS in six games and therefore, the season ended perfectly for me and my friends.
