Modells selling Yankees tix up to 50% off

Read this in the Daily News today - Here is the linkhttp://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/...k_yankee_.html

This is the article, just in case you can't access the link or can't be bothered:

Presenting a TKTS-type stand to see the best show in The Bronx - the New York Yankees.

Modell's Sporting Goods is opening a half-price ticket booth at its flagship Times Square store Monday that will peddle same-day Yankee tickets for up to 50% off.

The "Mo Saver" tickets - a riff on the nickname of ace reliever Mariano Rivera - will go on sale at 8 a.m. for home day games and at noon for night games.

There were be a four tickets per purchaser limit.

"We expect the new service to be an instant hit with local fans and tourists alike," said Mitchell Modell, CEO of Modell's Sporting Goods, who promised "amazing deals on game tickets."

Not that the Yankees need much help selling tickets.

The Bombers have led the American League in home attendance in each of the last seven seasons - and have already sold more than 3.7 million tickets this season.

Well that will help completely kill the resale market (not that there was much left) for all season ticket holders hoping to get some of their money back for games they dont attend

I wonder what locations these tickets will be in? Half price legends, champions, delta, etc? Or just Outfield Grandstand no alcohol sections?

I think it is pretty customer-unfriendly in the Internet age to force people to physically go somewhere to take advantage of a special offer. This is just another ruse to increase foot traffic at Modells. Watch for Steiner to come up with something soon that ties a ticket deal to the purchase of some over-priced piece of junk.

I'm not sure I agree with you. They are having this promotion so than can increase traffic. It's not about customer service.... It's about getting peopel to go to Modell's.

I think we are on the same page, Super.....I was just lamenting the fact that almost everything that has to do with the Yankees lately involves squeezing more money out of our pockets.

Except this isn't tied to the purchase of anything, from what I can see.

It's like the baseball version of TicketsTickets.

I don't think it has anything to do with the Yankees. I think that Modell's wants to drive traffic to the store and this is a good way to do it and the Yankees want to move expensive seats they normally can't get rid of.

REMEMEBER - It's only 1 store in Times Square - not the whole chain.
It is a LARGE store too - PLUS they are a sponsor/advertiser so maybe they see it as a win-win

But it's true, anyone with the time to go over there won't be buying off StubHub the day of the game.

It doesnt leave much time to flip them - about 3 hrs for day and 5 hrs for night games, but some people will try.

Yeah - that's it. I think the Tourism Board was probably involved in this too. My understanding is they're planning to build something like the TicketsTickets booth to sell them from, not selling out of the store, but I might've misheard the radio report.

If I was one of the guys that sells tickest outside, I would go there every AM, get tickets and go to the stadium to make a quick buck.

I'm guessing this is mainly Grandstand/Terrace/limited Field seating so no premium areas like Legends/Delta otherwise it would be a slap to the face of STH's
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

I think it will be quite the opposite. I don't think that Legends will be there, but Delta, Champions and Between the Bases will be. Unless someone posts it here, I'll never know becuase I have no intention of going there.

If the Yankees sold them at half price, it would be a slap to the face. However, Modell's is selling them.

The Yankees have sold tickets at half-price (and more) through the ESaver promotions and $5 ticket promotion.

YES, Modell's is selling the tickets but where do you think they are coming from

You really believe the Yankees are lowering the price of each ticket? I don't think so-I'm sure since Modell's is sponsoring this promotion, they are paying the difference of each ticket for their name being associated with this sale. (hence why you need to go to Modell's to buy them)

Just because the tickets come from the Yankees doesn't mean the Yankees sold the tickets at a lower price.....all the tickets I get are from the Yankees but if I sold the tickets at a much lower price I don't see why the Yankees are to be blamed.

May just try there sometime but usually buy before coming to NYC - still any way to get cheaper tickets helps!

YES, I already gave examples of the Yankees selling tixs at less than face. They have $5 tixs (which include up to the $48 Terrace seats-which I purchased 6 pairs throughout the season). I buy Terrace tixs for $5 at the Yankee Stadium box office-YOU tell me who is paying the price difference? They had an ESaver for the recent KC series (I beleive) where tixs were up to 50% off as well.

The simplest example is for season tixs, we pay less for a full season or partial plan than the advanced or game day price-Isnt this an example of the Yankees selling tixs at a lower price?

The game is going to be played regardless, so ANY money they can get is better than an empty seat-doesn't that make sense? I'm not blaming the Yankees for anything.

You are telling me that if I go to Modell's and buy a $300 Field Seat for $150, Modell's is paying the Yankees the $150 difference? It doesn't make economic sense. If they are going to do that, why not buy a sh*tload of $150 seats and just give them away-same thing isn't it? Stop being such a leeming. Its just like what TKTS does with show tixs

Why isn't there much of a resale market?
This is the Yankees, and New York City, a passionate sports base.

Yes it does-get people in your store, talking about your store. Free tickets would cause chaos and people who don't want to buy anything.

So you think Modell's isn't paying the Yankees anything to sell tickets half off in their store? Thats crazy

Yankees are getting the half-price ticket revenue, then receive additional sponsorship dollars from Modell's for allowing the sporting goods store to use the Yankees brand, in this new program, to increase foot traffic....so Modell's isn't picking up the cost of the discount on the ticket...but they do pay to sponsor the program.

Yankees - take in revenue on tickets that otherwise may not have sold at full-price. Create additional sponsorship revenue by adding another element to Modell's package. Increase attendance at Stadium where attendees will spend more money.

Modell's - generate additional foot-traffic by increasing their Yankees buy.

Its a win-win for both parties.

I have little doubt the discount is coming from the yankees. If Modell's is really buying tickets at face and selling them at half, that's a horrible promotion for them. If it's only upper deck seats, that'd be paying you $12.50 to walk in the door (and really more than that, since how many people buy just 1 ticket), and I assume it's more expensive tickets as well, which would be ludicrously expensive to get some foot traffic. The yankees offer discounted tickets all the time, and I think everyone knows they sell on stubhub below face as well. This is just another example of that, with them presumably getting some consideration from Modell's to sweeten the deal.

Re: Modells selling Yankees tix up to 50% off

this is a good thing by the Yankees/Modells but the sad thing in all of this are the people trying to turn a quick buck which really pisses me off.

    Example:
Unemployed guy wakes up day of game, heads to modells buys field level tix at 50% off so he pays $150 per, heads to the stadium stays outside and sells them for $250 per (which is a discount already to the unsuspecting customer) and makes $100 profit per.

So the lesson in all of this is fans wanting to get a discount on tix will be disappointed cause the tickets will be all bought up by greedy money grubbing ticket scalpers. It always works this way.
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

If the market was commanding that these tickets could sell for $250 day-of-game, don't you think the Yankees would just price it at $250 themselves?

The Yankees seem to always know what they are doing ticket-wise. They led all MLB teams in attendance from 2003 - 2008, came in a close second to the Dodgers in 2009, and are the leading team so far this season. They have a great product and they market it with calculated brilliance. This Modell's thing is just another example, and it is definitely a win-win for both parties. We don't know for sure what kind of inventory they will allocate for this deal, but with all the 'between the bases' hustling they have been doing, it's a good guess that this will be mostly about those expensive seats.

The Yankees brass absolutely knows the impact of all the discounting on FS and PS ticket licensees. I think they will come up with something, either a flashy but not especially valuable kick-in, or something mean and coercive, to support ticket licensee renewals for next season. I'm not sure what it will be, but it would really surprise me if they did nothing. Licensees are the fundamental bedrock of their attendance superiority.

Exactly. The only reason they're being made available at a discount is that they're not selling at face value in the first place. Anyone buying tickets at Modells in the hopes of flipping them is going to find themselves largely disappointed.

Who are we dealing with.... a 5 year old? Retailers sell stuff at 50% discount (and more) all the time. Why? It's taking up space and they need the room for new stuff. In marketing its called a loss leader - LOOK IT UP! Any additional butts you can put in the seats is better than an empty one, don't you agree? Why can't you get over the fact that Modell's isn't reimbursing them the FULL AMOUNT for the tixs? Granted there may be some sort of compensation, maybe a discount on the advertising contract, WHATEVER. It's ONE store we're talking about, not the whole chain that's selling the tixs. They are already a sponsor - did you notice there is a 10% discount on the back of every Yankees tix. OH NOW that Modell's is giving a discount, the Yankees are reimbursing Modell's for the difference according to your logic. Why do you think they are doing this at their flagship 42nd Street store? There is a lot of foot traffic, lots of VISITING FROM ANOTHER STATE/COUNTRY maybe once-in-a-lifetime foot traffic. Most locals bought there tixs awhile ago. Let's say I am from a another state/country or just a casual fan. I buy my 50% tixs, but since it may be my only time there - gotta look the part, or should I say Gotta Go To Mo's. Can't be lookin like a bum in these killer seats. It's a sunny day, buy a cap - HUMMM gotta freshen up the threads, I need a Tshirt or better yet, a jersey, YEAH a jersey. I'll just use the money I saved on the tixs. WHAT A DEAL!!! I still spend my $300 but I get a badass tix, a fresh lid and rockin' a Yankees jersey.

I'm at YANKEE STADIUM, I need the ballpark experience - time to eat, YUMMM - nothing like a couple of hotdogs at the game. BOY, it's hot - needs me a adult beverage, maybe 2 or 3 or 7(sorry lost count). Gotta do what the song says, buy me some popcorn and Cracker Jack. When I get home, I tell my homie.....who happens to be going the next week, about this deal and he does the same thing.

CORRECT - They couldn't possibly do it at their regular ticket venues (Clubhouse stores/ticketmaster/stadium ticket window) you would piss off to many people that paid full price. Chose someone who is already a sponsor. The game is gonna be played whether it be with 1 person or 50,003 in the stands.

Tickets are like any other commodity, I don't get why season ticket olders don't get that. Is it a slap in the face to full price ticket holders? Maybe. But thats how business is run

This is similar to the people , who, every year the Yankees win something, run down to Modells the next day to get that $25 championship shirt rather then wait a month when they sell them at half off to clear inventory. The fans who were so loyal they ran out to wear the shirts the next day get no refund.

I am guessing the bulk of these seats will be the outfield boxes, batters eye, non-premium field sections. Anotherwards, the sections fans avoid because they are grossly overpriced.

YES, it is an perishable commodity. If they can't/don't sell the seats, its not like they can save it for another day to sell - the next day brings new inventory to move.

$50 says bobby jr jumps in and says this is a stunt by the Yankees cause seats are empty blah blah blah and watch somehow he'll work a solution that includes a salary cap like the NBA
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

It will be interesting what seats are offered tomorrow especially since the ticket office has been telling those with $5.00 coupons since May that there are no more Terrace, Grandstand or Bleacher tickets left.

Because the remaining supply are the expensive "seats between the bases."

Oh man, I work two blocks away from this Modells- this could be very bad for my finances lol... but the fact that I can get physical tickets, unlike through Stubhub- that's fantastic!

...I just hope they have more than just Legends half off for $500.

Yep- half off $300 puts the seats between the bases right where they should cost to begin with in my opinion.

NICE!!! Hope you (or anyone in the area) could do us some recon and report back as to what was available. I just checked and JB 320B row 1 was pulling up 2 tixs

Well, not necessarily but selling the JB seats at 50% off would make them on par with the Terrace section in general

    Well said.

I think this is a great idea. I wish there was a Modells on LI doing it.
