    per yahoo answers

    As far as the wild card goes, Yankee's on 8/29/98; but as far as division championships go:

    The earliest was September 7th, by the Reds in 1975. It has never been clinched in august. The were up 20.5 games by the end of the day (with a Dodgers loss that day).

    Other early division champs:
    The Indians did it on 9/8 in 1995 and 1999, and the Yankee's and Braves on 9/9 in 1998 and 2002 respectively, and the Angles did it today, 9/10/08.
    Baseball is life;
    the rest is just details.

    Re: Magic Number

    I assume that's the divisional magic number, and not some weak "make it to the playoffs on a wild card" magic number.

    Strangely, but pleasantly, the definition of magic number has been altered recently. All these years, it has been "X yankee wins and/or red sox losses." Oh, how times have changed, let's hope it stays that way!!

    LETS GO YANKEES!

    As it stands now it's not only divisional magic number, but best record/home field advantage until the World Series magic number. The wimpy make the playoff number is something like 44.

    Anyway...

    It is actually less than 41 since the Yankees have games remaining against the Rays. The magic number calculation assumes the other team(s) in the race win all of their remaining games and the magic number is the number of games that the team in question, in this case the Yankees, must win in order to finish ahead of their closest pursuer.

    Since the Yankees have seven games remaining against the Rays, they don't have to win 41 games, but really only 38. By winning 38 of the 41 remaining games, they would necessarily win four of the seven against the Rays and that would ensure that they win the division by no less than two games even if the Rays win all of their remaining games against other opponents.

    Similarly, the Rays although they trail in the division at the moment, also have a magic number. In this case that number is 39. If they win 39 more games, it will mean that they must defeat the Yankees five of the seven times they play which would allow them to gain three games in the standings and overtake New York.
