Thread: Chipper Jones Injury: End of the Road?

Re: Chipper Jones Injury: End of the Road?

I'm absolutely astonished that a baseball player wouldn't walk away from $26 million. I think Chipper really believes his talk about retiring but you don't just walk away from money on the table. If he comes back and sucks next year I'd come very close to putting money down that he'll be back in 2012 saying that the injury was still effecting him in 2011 and he wants to see what he can do for Atlanta when he's fully healthy.

"I’m going to go through this rehab process, just like I was trying to get ready for spring training," Jones said. "I don’t know how the knee is going to respond. When I was 23 years old, I lost a step because of this surgery. If I lose another step, I’ll be going backwards. I don’t know how all that is going to turn out. I’m going to try my best to rehab to get it ready for spring training and we’ll see how it feels after that."

Also, if he retires he walks away from 26m.

Re: Chipper Jones Injury: End of the Road?

this really warrants a separate thread about HOF players. Just my separate $0.02 I think these guys are a lock for

    1st ballot:
    Derek Jeter
    Mariano Rivera
    John Smoltz
    Tom Glavine
    Greg Maddox
    Randy Johnson
Ivan Rodriguez (PED suspicion may push him out of 1st ballot but I think he eventually makes it)
    Ken Griffey Jr
Albert Pujols (kinda early but I'll list him)
    Pedro Martinez
    Joe Mauer
    Ichiro Suzuki
    Craig Biggio

    2nd Ballot or later:
    Barry Larkin
    Chipper Jones
Chase Utley (I say no, but a buddy of mine says yes)
    Edgar Martinez
Jorge Posada (I'm on the fence with this one)
    Frank Thomas
    Jim Thome
Johnny Damon (I'm on the fence with this one as well)
    Dustin Pedrioa
Alex Rodriguez (writers will try and punish him for PEDs so no 1st ballot)
Mark McGwire (admission made some headway, probably on 5th or 6th ballot he makes it)

Probably not anytime soon atleast until PED admission:
    Barry Bonds
    Rodger Clemens
    Manny Ramierz
    Pete Rose
    Rafael Palmero
    Sammy Sosa
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

    uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

there are only three players on this list that have less than 15 years playing time.
they're Utley, Mauer, and Pedroia... only one of those three has ONLY THREE AND A HALF YEARS OF PLAYING TIME under his belt, with a lifetime OPS+ of 113.

You're not sure about Utley but the midget is a lock????

"Dustin Pedroia" and "HOF" shouldn't be in the same sentence.

    Unless it's that sentence.

Utley, Mauer, and Pedroia need to maintain for many more years before they can be considered. At this stage in their career, no way they should be even in a conversation. You can't toss around HOF worthy so easily.

It might be a specialty stat, but again, when your only other company is Mickey Mantle and Eddie Murray among switch hitters, I'd say you're certainly in the running for the HoF

And I think that's the big issue: Chipper is a switch hitter. Had he done this as a left handed hitter while playing LF, then he's in the Hall of Very Good, a'la Larry Walker. But Chipper is a switch hitter who has played 3B much of his career, played for a single franchise that wasn't a major hitter's paradise, while being an integral part of the Braves streak, won an MVP, and won a WS ring.

All that is what voters love, and he'll (rightfully) get in

Why is that the big issue? It's never gotten anyone in the HOF before, never even earned anyone extra credit. If the stats aren't good enough for a lefty or a righty, they're not good enough for a switch-hitter, either.

Yeah, I don't understand that either. I think Chipper will get in because his numbers warrant it. It might be a fun fact that he's done all this as a switch hitter, but what matters is what he's done, regardless of what side of the plate he did it from. Bernie Williams is in the hall of very good - no one's giving him brownie points for being a switch hitter.

I always heard that he was a total a-hole. At any rate, fathering an illigitimate son with a Hooters waitress is enough for me to strike him from my "class act" list.

I still think he gets into the Hall. I always considered him underrated by those who didn't follow the Braves.

You and I both know that's not true, unless you're talking about the calendar models.

    The waitresses though?

I am lucky enough to have two of the calendar models working near me. I agree that most are not great but, eye candy is a good thing, at times.
