    Mad Men season 4

Anyone watching? So far so good. It was very cringeworthy watching Roger get humiliated like he did, as well as the exchange between Don and his secretary the morning after. Still one of the best acted shows on TV. I'm excited as to where it's headed this season so far.

Also, that kid Glenn is a creep.

Roger's already had some phenomenal lines this year.

Draper reminds me of guys like Vick Mackey and Dexter: When you analyze them, they're really bad people, but you root for them nonetheless.

I predict that Glenn kid is going to talk Sally into doing something bad.

    Nobody?

This season has been amazing. They've amped up the comedy and one liners.

The past two weeks have been among the best episodes in a while. I loved seeing the back story of how Don got hired.

Did it turn out that Don got hired while Roger was drunk, and Roger never remembered. Or did Don just show up and imply that?

I think Don made that up and Roger couldn't deny it because he was so drunk. You could see Don smile as the doors close. I love how it came full circle and Don had to hire someone because he got drunk.

Also, how awesome was the episode with Don & Lane going out, getting drunk, getting called gay, then getting hookers?

My dumb ass didn't make that connection. Well done.

The hooker episode was great, but I think last night was the best one so far. I almost believe Draper was really drunk in those scenes. Even when he wasn't speaking he looked completely in the bag.

Jon Hamm is a great actor. He pulls the complex parts of that character off so brilliantly, it's impossible not to like him despite being such an asshole. The smirk on his face while he was listening to Roger's tape was priceless.

He's showing lots of range this year. I wanted to punch him when he was berating Peggy (even though he had some good points) but then I wanted to hug him after he called Cali 15 minutes later.

The Suitcase was the best episode in a long time, maybe ever. And I know its early in the season, but S4 is shaping up to be the best season so far as well.

Peggy is my favorite character, I love her relationship with Don and how they are both so similar. I don't know what Matt Weiner is planning, but I hope they don't make them have a romantic relationship, I much prefer their deeper understanding of each other without Don's messy sex life interfering.

I so agree! I do nor want to see the two of them in bed together.

The reason Don is so hard on Peggy is because he sees himself in her and in her impatience to reach the top. He knows the work it takes to get there and he won't accept sloppy work from her. She does not understand this but will in time. Now, thanks to the great acting of Jon Hamm, she has seen Don's vulnerable side.

Ugh, I don't want them to sleep together either

But if they did, the world might explode from the combination of such sexiness.

I agree with that too. If anything, Roger Sterling would like to revisit some of that action.

    Re: Mad Men season 4

I don't think Don is going to end up with anyone in a permanent way. The spectacular failure of his marriage was due to a lot of reasons, but the biggest was Don's hobo nature -- he can't or won't be tied down by anyone or anything, not even his own kids.

Some people are not a good fit for marriage, and I think Don (Dick) is one of them.

I would be shocked, completely shocked, if Don slept with Peggy or Joan. Would be totally outside the tone of the show.

What I do expect to see now with the death of Anna is more of a merging of the steel-cold Don Draper persona that Dick Whitman invented with the actual Dick Whitman. I think that was the subtle implication of the "Leave the door open" line at the end of "The Suitcase."

And finally, "Sterling's Gold" was INCREDIBLE. Miss Blankenship the sex kitten? Cooper has no balls? (It really does make his character make sense now though, doesn't it??). LOLOLOLOLOL....

I'm an episode or two behind but I watched several in the last week, including the one where Pete find out he's going to be a dad. The last scene with Pete and Peggy each going their separate ways, but catching each other's eye before leaving, was really touching.
Also Pete calling in Cosgrove to the conference room just to knock him down a couple of notches was awesome.
Don't tease me, you know what I do for a living.

Interesting, I just took that as looking back to when Peggy was Don's secretary, and she used that line often.

No, I think it was much deeper than that. Now that Anna is gone, Peggy is the next person that probably knows and understands the most about who Don Draper is. Anna told Don that she knew everything about him, and loved him anyways, and Don said that she was the only one. But she's not. I definitely think Peggy is going to take Anna's place, and I think Don knows this too - he is "opening" himself up to her.

I had recommended the show to a friend back during the second season. He told me he was up all night watching one episode after another after getting them from Netflix. The show is really one of the best shows ever, IMO. I could watch them over and over again.

The Suitcase episode was one of the best hours of television I've ever seen. Jon Hamm and Elizabeth Moss had better win awards or I will stage a protest! That was so touching when he took her hand at the end, and they looked at each other.

I watched the first 2 seasons on DVD with my mom. She is usually not a person to get deeply involved in any TV show. Every time we watched, she would keep saying "Let's watch just one more." Well, one more...one more...one more... we stayed up way past bedtime on many occasions.

I agree it is one of the best shows ever.

As dramatic as the Suitcase episode was, there were also some very funny moments:

Duck trying to leave Don a "present." -- Peggy's comment: "That's disgusting!!...and this is ROGER'S office!"

The look on Pete's face when he saw Trudy and Peggy leaving the ladies room together.

Roger talking to Don on the phone about the recovering alcoholics he was forced to have dinner with - "They are so self righteous. One of 'em killed a guy with a motorboat. Ya know how ya get over that??!!....DRINKING!!"

I have one kid and I still haven't had time to actually watch a baseball game start to finish this season. Possibly because I have too many TV shows I'm addicted to.

It is easy to say that now but even though the show has been a critical success from the beginning I think it took awhile for the ratings to catch up to that. I started a thread on this show for Mad Men Season 1 because I loved it from the start. No one else seemed interested then. I thought I was the only one who liked it.

It still doesn't get very good ratings. I think last years finale lost to E!'s Kardashian show by about 1,000,000 viewers.

    There's no accounting for taste.

The good news is, Mad Men's demographics skew high income, which of course advertisers like, and AMC benefits greatly from having a 3-Time Emmy winner to build its credibility as a creator of high-quality original programming.

And finally, Mad Men is among the most time-shifted and digitally purchased shows out there. (Again, due to the relative affluence of its audience.) Overnight ratings are kind of useless where Mad Men is concerned, as so many people who watch Mad Men see it at times other than Sunday night, 10pm. I personally DVR it, and then wait like a crack junkie until around 10:30 so I can watch it commercial free.

Agreed on all points. AMC has 3 original series and all of them are great.

In spite of all that, I believe that this season's opener got the highest ratings in it's time period. At least, that is what I remember hearing at the time. I suppose there is a way of looking that up to be sure for anyone who is so inclined.

On that note, Breaking Bad should have its own thread. Hell, its own channel.

Can someone just give me an idea of what the show is about? Is it about a family or neighborhood couples? A Comedy? Is it like Desperate Housewives or what show can you compare it to? (not that I will probably know the show....) thx

It's about the 60's, advertising, and it's a bit about a family, but it is mostly about Don Draper, the man the myth they mystery and the legend.

It's not a comedy but has some funny parts. Comparing it Desperate Housewives is basically offensive. It's hard to compare it to another TV show actually. It's more like a piece of artwork.
