    Political Soapbox

Should we keep the Political Soapbox for discussion of current events and issues of the day? I know the decision has been made, but let's let democracy have it's day.

    Have at it.

Although I never much posted there I did read it regularly. I learned a thing or two from it.

I rarely ever went in there but I think it should be allowed to continue. No matter how explosive political conversations can be I see no reason why there shouldn't be a place for it.

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes. No question, in my mind. Beneath some of that sniping, there was actually good discussion.

Some moderation could easily resolve a lot of the issues that were going on in there.

Quoted for emphasis. I really don't understand why this hasn't been done. It could be cleaned up VERY quickly, if just a little research and monitoring was done. It's not hard to see where the trouble comes from.

Keep it so that political commentary & threads would (for the most part) be kept out of the rest of the community forums.

Absolutely. The SubForum could easily be internally moderated. Just pick a couple regular posters who are reasonable toward dissenting viewpoints, and give them the authority to serve as moderator, even if just for the soapbox.

There's a better way. Don't shut us down!!!

Politics arent my thing and its not something I come to this board to discuss. With that said, I have no problems with having a seperate area for those who wish to talk about them.

Also I think by keeping them seperate from the rest of the board, we wont see those types of threads start to intrude other parts of the board (JC) and annoy those of us who have no desire to have to wade thru those threads.

    Agreed.

I'm not much into politics, I mean I'll comment here and there once in a while but thats about it. I don't want to see that stuff leaking into JC or other parts of the board. It was nice to have it in one spot that was out of the way of the main board. I know they said that politics will be banned from conversations/threads here but thats gonna be almost impossible to do. It's also a bigger workload for the mod team to not have the PS where all that stuff can be in one general area instead of scattered around the board (which WILL happen)

I generally tend to agree with and side with the moderators of the site, in this case I have to disagree. I dont think removing it was the right move, and strongly urge them to reconsider the "Maynerd Solution".

I can definately see JC becoming the Politics Light Forum, and that resulting in suspensions and bannings that should have happened in the PS in the first place.

I respect your decision and understand that it was a long road to get here, but strenously object to the closing of the PS with solid options on the table.

Lou, what you're not and can't say is that they won't ever come up for consideration. When folks lose a long running forum like this, especially after it was predicted after the SNY purchase, they get antsy in the pantsy.

They very well CAN close the conversation portions of this site. You know it, we all know it. Just because you haven't discussed it yet, and the current group of mods dont feel it will ever happen, doesn't act as a protection against such an event.

So while we can all take you at your word that it hasn't come up, and you're not thinking about it... they have a right to be at least a little worried.

Boz, as Lou just pointed out, the plan had been to close the PS for awhile. No other options were necessary.

I get that they had decided some time ago, but up until then they've tried a lot of things. Different mods, different rules, one thread -- and none of it worked for them permanently. I tell you right now, the "Maynerd Solution" would have only lasted a while too - ultimately he'd have gotten sick of it too.

You have to react to that change though, you've got to prepare for folks burning out on the most challenging parts of the job, and bring in new blood. After Maynerd maybe it would be someone else's turn, and let them handle it.

I'd rather not speculate or comment on why they didn't go this route, just voice my opinion that i disagree.

Yes, it has been a problem. As in, for some reason its mere existence offended you guys. But never fear, Lou. The big bad NYYFans liberals won't be able to say those nasty things ever again.

For all those who you who suggested me as an alternative to the eventual decision, thanks. The confidence you all seem to have in me to make a difference is kinda humbling.

But, in the long run, Boz is right. I was frequently tired of the unnecessary theatrics in the Soapbox and I was certainly bummed out by the occassional childishness. Had "the Maynerd Solution" been implemented, some of you might have quickly regretted it, as my patience with those who created friction (rather than discussion) would have been very short.

What's done is done. There's another place to discuss politics, and this remains an outstanding site for all its other functions. Time to move along.

This had nothing to do with the politics involved. I rarely go in there, and frankly couldn't give a rat's *** what the liberals say in there.
