The Isles signed D Mark Eaton.
Yay!

The Isles signed D Mark Eaton.
Yay!
Eaton played his Amateur hockey on LI with the NY Apple core back in the day.
God I feel like Pierre Mcgwire after throwing out that random ass fact.

Wang has dived into the deep end of the pool before so there's precedence. The Isles can't sign A-list UFAs without overpaying for them, either in dollars or length of contract due to questions surrounding where they will play in a few years and who will own the team. No agent will reccomend to his client that he sign here now.Originally Posted by CanoForPresident
For the Isles to be successful they have to draft better than any other team in the league and have that translate into success on the ice. I think they are following that plan. When they win in the playoffs (and resolve their off-ice issues) then they will attract top-notch UFAs who can be difference makers.
The Islanders have to do what the MInnesota Twins have done to survive right now. Re-stock their farm system, grow their own talent and hope they can win later on.
Their last 2 entry drafts have gone a long way to restocking the farm. Time will tell if these players can help the team.
Dean Lombardi says the Kings are out of it for Kovalchuk

Oh dude I agree. If Wang wants Kovalchuk, Wang will get him, even if it means having to give him what is pretty much a lifetime contract.Originally Posted by Pinstripedbass
The only 2 things that would really worry be about going forward with this deal are -
1) Have the Isles created enough depth in the system to forgo the rest of the rebuild and try to make it with what they have?
2) Russian forwards, for what ever reason, tend to decline the second they hit 30. Thats not a rule thats set in stone, but its something to consider. Kovalev is one Russian who put up one of his best seasons ever at 34, but nothing hes done over his career has made much sense anyway.
That said, I think this is a deal the Isles should make. They've got the Cap space to get this done and keep the core they've got right now together. They'd be a few defensemen (3, 2 after Hamonic makes it up, that dude is a stud) and a half way decent goalie away from contending for the cup IMO.

Biggest offer from: NYI
Wants to go to: LAK
Fall back plan: NJD/NYI
The 10 for 10 rumor can't be true because Kovalchuk would have to be stupid to turn that down. I don't doubt that the Isles actually have extended the most lucrative, non KHL offer though.

The Islanders did not renew the contract of scouting director Ryan Jankowski.

Curious move considering how it's generally accepted that the Isles have done a good job drafting the last 2 years.
No word from the Isles on why Jankowski was not renewed.

Newsday had reported that the Isles never made any concrete offer to Kovy.Originally Posted by CanoForPresident

Didn't see that Newsday Report. I don't believe in 95% of the stuff out there on Kovalchuk though.

I don't know if anyone's had a chance to catch it, but the NHL Network has been doing a whole week of specials saluting the Isles dynasty years of 1980 - 1983. They've been showing all the Cup clinching games the past few nights (the 1983 one is tonight).
Watching these games has made me really think about what George Steinbrenner has meant to the Yankees franchise. There was a point during the post-game coverage from '82 where the announcers are talking about how the Islanders had become the "premiere franchise in the NHL" and that they could not envision a time in the future when the team would not be "competitive".
As we all know, that was not the case, but it does go to show you how important George was to the Yankees: for the most part he would not allow the team to regress to the point of non-competition. You really don't need to look any further than the Marlins, Orioles, Indians and other once-competitive teams to see what happens when ownership stops giving a damn.
If only George had possessed some stake in the Islanders...maybe we would not have add the words "long-suffering" to the the term "Islanders fan".
Waiting for Sterling to retire so I can start listening to games on the radio again...
The difference between George and the then Islanders owner Pickett was once Pickett signed his multi million dollar contract with Cablevision he was content to just pocket the money and not spend it on keeping the Isles on top.Originally Posted by PeteRFNY

Exactly. He could have easily been the kind of owner than made a ton of money then just sat back counting it, but he cared too much about winning to let that happen. Thank goodness for that!

Isles let color commentator Billy Jaffe go.

I expect that they will name a former Isles player, either Butch Goring or Denis Potvin and make a point of having someone with Islanders connections calling the games. But I think Jaffe and Howie Rose did aan excellent job together for a team that finished 26th and 30th the last 2 years. Jaffe I thought was a bit of a homer at first but he grew on me.
More Mickey Mouse crap from Charles Wang trying to control any sort of criticism aboout his team.
Jaffe did a fine job. Maybe he wanted more money. Cheepskate Wang was not going to pay alot. That's why no more radio announcers.Originally Posted by Pinstripedbass
Chris Botta reported that MSG offered Jaffe a multi-year deal to continue as Isles' color commentator. The Isles had final say and they nixed the deal because Jaffe "wasn't providing enough positive insight". In other words, he wasn't gushing over a team that has only made the playoffs 4 times in the last 16 years and hasn't won a playoff series since 93. I was pretty floored by that...the guy was terrific.
Really? I seem to remember him being a little too complementary of the IslesOriginally Posted by RhodyYanksFan
He'll get a job somewhere else (I'd trade Joe M back to the Islanders for Jaffe.) Jaffe was one of the few people worth listening to on the Vs. broadcasts.

Isles resign Matt Moulson to a one year contract. Might have been a better idea to sign him for three years since Matt can now be an unrestricted FA after next season.

Isles trade for D James Wisniewski from Anaheim for a 3rd round pick.
Great move by Snow. This gives the Isles a little more snarl and grit on the blueline, where they were small and soft.
Hes not durable at all but for a team looking to make the cap floor and needed his type of presence on the blue line, its a no brainer.

Just another way for Wang to insure very low attendance so he can move the team to Brooklyn in three years.
I'm gonna say this once because chances are it won't be true for much longer (well the first half of it at least...)
I love Nino Niederreiter and I hate that you guys have him.

Its really a shame. Still plenty of support for the team but everyone is fed up with Wang and the crap he has put on the ice. A decent team would still sell-out the Coliseum. I'm a 30 minute subway ride away from the Barclay center and I would still perfer them to stay at the Coliseum.
The main thing is that in Brooklyn Wang still can get the money from the Cablevision contract. He would lose that if he moved to another city. Its that contract that has kept the team in business all these years.Originally Posted by mjdlight
