Devils fined 3 mill in non cap dollars, a 2011 3rd round pick and one first round pick over the next four years (as in they only lose one pick and they can chose which draft to forfeit the pick in between 2011-14)

Glad to see the NHL do something about this. If they really wanted to send a message they would have shaved that 3 mill of of their cap for next season but I suppose that would be a little to harsh. This is a fair punishment IMO.

What a joke! So when do Chicago, Boston, Vancouver, and Philadelphia get fined for their contracts that circumvent the cap? I like how the arbitrator explicitly says the Devils acted in good faith yet they still get this bull................ from Bettman. I hope something really, really bad happens to that asshole.

Again, none of those other contracts were as extreme as what the Devils and Kovalchuk initially agreed to.

Man I told you that this was a real possibility when this all first went down. Good faith or not, theres a rule in the CBA that specifically states that any attempt at cap circumvention will result in either a cap penalty and/or loss of draft picks. Lou or who ever drew up that contract was pretty much asking for this to happen the second a 17 year deal went on the table.

I actually think the 15 year deal is an even stronger example of cap circumvention. Its the same ................ as the 17 year deal except they try to hide it by dropping the salary earlier and then escalating it a bit toward the end. Be happy it was accepted and move on.

This whole thing was a farce and I'm glad its completely over. I can't wait for the games to be played on the ice again.

Yeah I am glad the NHL actually did 'something'...Losing a 1st rounder is a big deal IMO, and it serves the Devils right for the contract they tried to pull off.

And yeah I am pumped for games to start up again soon baby!

Losing a first in itself isn't that big a deal, especially since they get to choose which year they lose it (if the NHL had set it so that they lose their first and third this year, that would have been a bigger deal.)

Still, they're going to have lost 2 firsts in a 5 year span when its all said and done on top of everything they initially gave up for Kovalchuk+ a 15 year, 100 million dollar deal.

The cap hit is very friendly for a player of his ability but thats a lot to give up for a guy who has never won anything (not entirely his fault) and the Devils better hope that he doesn't go into a steep decline after 30 that seems to be the norm with Russian Forwards who play their entire career in North America: Mogilny, Federov, Bure, Yashin, even Datsyuk is starting to show signs of slowing down. The only one I can think of who didn't start to fall off after 30 is Kovalev, but he's just a tough player to figure out all together, haha.

Honestly I was a little surprised the NHL did as much as they did to penalize them considering they let a very similar cotnract that only had a raised the cap hit of .666M more. I think they forced themselves to make up for it by doing this after reallizing how similar the voided contract was to the new one. Oh well, the days of absurd contracts should be over hopefully.

Yeah i agree that it lessens the damage since they get to pick what year they lose their first rounder. But the Devils have been able to find some late round gems in the past in Parise and Zajac, and taking a pick (plus the one they traded) certainly will hurt in the future.

And ofcourse you know Malkin will be the Russian who continues to be a superstar well past 30.

Zajac and Parise were both first round picks with Parise being a top 20 pick. If the 2003 draft were to be held today Parise would have easily gone in the top 10, the big concerns with him were size (which was legit in that era) and skating, which he has improved dramatically since he was drafted. Zajac was a good pick, but hes gone from being criminally underrated to a little overrated IMO. For instance, I take Pavelski over Zajac in a heart beat, but if you propose a Pavelski for Zajac trade to a Devil fan (not all of them) you'll get a bunch of snarky responses, haha.

Malkin reminds me a bit of Federov, so you should enjoy the next 6 years while you can
