If I'm the Devils I don't do that deal. They gotta start re-tooling for the future and while the farm system has gotten better, they have few guys who actually have the potential to be a top line scorer. Tedenby is really the only guy who could fit that role one day.

Agreed....though if he is crazy and did that, and is going to keep this saga going I would find it absolutely hilarious!

The Devils are built to win now though.

I think they'd be doing a disservice to themselves if they didn't go for it right now. Rebuilding and retooling is something they're going to have to do eventually anyway.

Unless the Devils brass doesn't think they have a legit shot this year or if they feel Tedenby is the second coming of Mats Naslund, you don't let him get in the way of adding a piece that may push you over the top. Thats JMO.

On the real, I'd like to thank the Devils for ensuring that they won't be winning the cup for how ever long Kovalchuk is signed

Where do you see 17? I see 7yr/$60 million. Fool lost $40 million and 3 guaranteed years to leave Atlanta.

This dude is pretty wired in when it comes to Russian players. He broke the Volchenkov signing (who I believe has the same agent as Kovalchuk)

Kovalchuk leaving Atlanta was the best thing for both sides.

Would this deal cause them to not be able to re-sign Parise? Can the Rangers snag him next offseason?

Nope. Arnott and Lagenbrunner both come off the books next year. That alone will be more than enough to keep Parise around.

I'm a little surprised to see the Devils go the European route (Volchenkov, Tallinder, Kovalchuk, Josefson, etc) when a North American game is what gets it done these days (Sans the Red Wings, who are really the only successful East-West team out there, but they crash the net.)

Can't fault the Devs for shooting their wad and hoping that with Kovalchuk, they can win a cup before Fatso retires. The only thing that I find a little troubling is that they've got more important holes to fill and won't have the space to do it. They've got little to no immediate relief coming off the books the next few years (when you factor in the raise Parise is going to get.) I suppose they can really go for it this year and make a trade at the deadline for a missing piece at a pro rated salary, but they better win if they do it.

    17 years, $102M

    First 8 years @ $10M
    Next 2 years @ $7.5M
    Final 7 years @ $1M

He'll be 44 at the end of this deal.

If that's right...I don't know how the league approves it, but I also don't know if there's anything in the CBA that says the Devils can't do that. By keeping him on at $1M for those final 7 years, that puts their cap hit at $6M. Without those final 7 years, his cap hit would be closer to $9M-$10M.

I don't see the league very happy with that...if that is indeed the deal (it's being reported that way by ESPN).

It can't be structured like that. The most a players salary can drop from year to year is 50%.

This is more ridiculous than the Hossa contract last year. 12 years is a ton but 17 year will almost take us into 2030.

But a 6M per a year hit is a pretty sweet deal for Kovalchuk. Jersey just better hope that he continues to perform well past 30, which is something not many Russian players have done.

Ok obviously I don't know how the salary cap works all that well Or maybe there are performance clauses in that year that will bump it up to 2?

Still, I know there is some percentage of salary drop that is the maximum allowed. I'm pretty sure 7.5 to 1 wouldn't be allowed.

I just really like Modano and really don't like Detroit.

Going back to Kovi - there will still be 6 years (@ $6million cap hit) left on the deal when he's Jagr's age.

Yeah, and you can bet your ass that he's playing at least 10 of those 17 years.

I don't think there is enough evidence to show this, but it seems like Russian forwards just fall off of a cliff either health or production wise once they hit 30. We saw one or the other happen with Federov, Mogilny, Bure and it may be starting to happen to Datsyuk.

This off season has been really, really uncharacteristic for Lou. I guess he knows that the Devils window to win is closing (hell, it may have already closed) so he better spend now and try to win again before going through an inevitable rebuild.

As you said, I think they're just trying to get one more in before Marty retires. Plus rebuilding around Kovi and Parise in their primes is pretty good start.

The NHL has rejected Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils on the grounds that it circumvents the NHL's salary cap.

I don't think there should be a maximum per se. I've got no issues with locking up guys who are just coming off of entry level deals to long term contracts, as long as the terms will only take them within reasonable playing years.

Handing out a 17 year contract to a guy who probably wont play more than 10 years is ridiculous and for once, I commend Bettman for doing the right thing.

I'd have no problem with the rejection...if they did this for past deals (Pronger, Hossa, Zetterberg, Franzen, Luongo). Somehow it is ok for other teams to use this loophole...

Oh well, in the end I'm sure Kovalchuk will end up a Devil and this would all have been a waste of time. If he doesn't though I hope he bolts to the KHL for good and encourages other players to do the same.

This seems more like the first mini battle over the next upcoming CBA fight they are going to have.

Pronger was a 35+ contract, which means the Flyers pay him regardless.

None of those other guys got 17 year contracts. If the Kovalchuk deal was a 12 year thing, the NHL wouldn't have gone ahead and rejected it.

I agree that he'll be a Devil in the end but I don't see this being much of a fight. The NHL wouldn't reject this contract if they weren't sure that they'd win a legal battle (which they would, rather easily.)

Consider this a blessing because while most of us are laughing about this (lets face it, it is kind of funny), you'll probably end up with a more manageable deal in the end.

I don't know, I think Grossman has a legit case against the NHL. Plus if it comes down to it, we have Lou to go up against them.

Still I don't understand this picking and choosing. It certainly will get addressed in the next CBA (which I am really worried about another work stoppage so millionaires can bitch at each other while we lose out).

I don't see how the Devils come out of this with a better deal. I can only see the cap hit going up.

The only one of these monster deals that makes sense is Ovechkin and only because he signed his 13 year deal when he was 22, not 28.

    Richards too.

I don't think anyone is going to argue that the Hossa, Zetterberg and Franzen deals were put together to dance around the cap, but the Kovalchuk deal is much more blatant than any of those three in that regard. 17 years to a guy who most likely won't play more than 10-11 of them with how many of those later years at 500K?

The Devs will probably sign him to a shorter deal with a slightly higher cap hit, but nothing too drastic. I've got no issue with Devils fans being pissed over this because it does come off as kind of unfair (I don't think so, but you could make a case that they're being singled out here) but had this happened to the Rangers, they'd be acting like the rest of us and then some.

Don't be silly. The Rangers aren't smart enough to circumvent the cap. They'd just sign a guy for 9 years at $10 million per year when he's 30.

I'm heading to Toronto for the weekend, and hopefully will be able to go to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Friday.

You'll like the Hockey HOF in Toronto. I went there four years ago including touching the Stanley Cup, other nostaglia items such as jerseys, bios of the HOFers, play goalie and take slap shots.
