    2010-11 NHL Season Schedule Released

    Team-by-team
    http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=63085

    Can't miss games
    http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=532279

    Oct. 7, NHL Face-Off
Four games are on tap to open the NHL's 93rd season, highlighted by the Maple Leafs hosting the archrival Canadiens following an opening day hockey and entertainment festival in Toronto.

Also, Pittsburgh hosts Philadelphia and unveils the NHL's newest arena, Consol Energy Center, only their second home rink since entering the NHL in 1967.

In other games, Chicago opens its defense of the Stanley Cup at Colorado, and Calgary is at provincial rival Edmonton. The latter game is likely to be the NHL debut of 2010 No. 1 draft pick Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin, either of whom could be playing for the Oilers. Either player would become the fourth consecutive No. 1 selection to debut in the NHL in the opening-night game of the same season (John Tavares, Steven Stamkos, Patrick Kane).

    Oct. 7-10, NHL Premiere
For the fourth straight season, the NHL regular-season will launch in Europe. This time the contingent is six teams, as Carolina and Minnesota play twice in Helsinki, Finland (Oct. 7 & 8), Columbus and San Jose will face off for two games in Stockholm, Sweden (Oct. 8 & 9), and Boston and Phoenix clash twice in Prague, Czech Republic (Oct. 9 & 10).

    Oct. 9, Detroit at Chicago
The Blackhawks host the Red Wings, their Original Six rival, at United Center – and before the game, they'll raise the fourth Stanley Cup championship banner in franchise history, and first since 1961.

    Oct. 30, 14 games
On the busiest night of the schedule, 28 of the 30 teams will be in action.

    Nov. 6, Buffalo at Toronto
Two days before the official induction of Dino Ciccarelli, Cammi Granato, Angela James, Jimmy Devellano and Daryl Seaman, the Maple Leafs will host the Sabres in the Hockey Hall of Fame Game, an annual rite in which the induction class is honored in a pregame ceremony at Air Canada Centre.

Nov. 20, NY Rangers at Minnesota
Marian Gaborik, the one-time franchise wunderkind of the Wild (2000-2009), returns to Minnesota for the first time as the opposition. The Rangers did visit St. Paul last season, but Gaborik did not play due to a leg injury.

    Nov. 24, Boston at Florida
The Panthers had high hopes for Nathan Horton, the No. 3 pick in the 2003 Entry Draft. Shortly after the 2010-11 schedule was released, he was dealt to the Bruins after six seasons and 142 goals scored for Florida. This is his first trip back to the BankAtlantic Center.

Dec. 2, San Jose at Ottawa
Two-time 50-goal scorer Dany Heatley, traded by Ottawa to San Jose last summer, returns to Scotiabank Place as a visitor for the first time -- and probably won't receive a warm welcome. Last season, the Senators and Sharks only met in San Jose.

    Dec. 16, Toronto at Calgary
Rugged defenseman Dion Phaneuf, the new captain of the Maple Leafs, returns to Calgary for the first time since his surprising trade to Toronto last season. Phaneuf was a fan favorite for five seasons with the Flames, his first NHL team.

    Dec. 23, Pittsburgh at Washington
Round 1 of Alex Ovechkin vs. Sidney Crosby comes one week before their expected epic of an outdoor game.

Jan. 1, 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic
For the fourth consecutive season, the NHL takes it outside on New Year's Day with the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. This edition is a mega-watt star showdown between Alex Ovechkin's Capitals and Sidney Crosby's Penguins at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Forbes magazine labeled the Winter Classic the best new sporting event of the last decade.

    Jan. 20, Anaheim at Toronto
In nine seasons with the Ducks, goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere guided them to the Stanley Cup twice, winning it all in 2007. Tonight, he faces Anaheim for the first time as an opponent.

    Jan. 22, Anaheim at Montreal
It should be an emotional evening when Saku Koivu returns to Montreal for the first time as a visiting player. He captained Montreal for most of his tenure from 1995 through 2009 before leaving as a free agent. Koivu played against the Canadiens once last season, but the game took place in Anaheim.

    Jan. 23, Philadelphia at Chicago
The Stanley Cup finalists meet for the first time since Patrick Kane's overtime goal ousted the Flyers in Game 6.

    Jan. 30, NHL All-Star Game
The League's 58th annual mid-season spectacular visits the Carolina Hurricanes and the city of Raleigh. The NHL SuperSkills takes place on Jan. 29 at the RBC Center.

    Feb. 6, Pittsburgh at Washington
Round 3 of Ovechkin vs. Crosby is a Sunday matinee at Verizon Center.

Feb. 12, Hockey Day In Canada
CBC's 11th annual Hockey Day In Canada offers a "Hockey Night in Canada" triple header -- Ottawa at Edmonton (2 p.m. ET), Toronto at Montreal (7 p.m. ET), and Calgary at Vancouver (10 p.m. ET).

Feb. 17, Detroit at Tampa Bay
Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman faces the Red Wings, the team he starred for as a player for 22 seasons before beginning his executive career, for the only time this season.

    Feb. 20, Montreal at Calgary
The NHL Heritage Classic returns to Canada for the first time since 2003 and pits the Canadiens against the Flames in an outdoor game at McMahon Stadium. Bring your long johns.

Feb. 20, Hockey Day In America
As part of USA Hockey's Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by Reebok, the day-long event will celebrate hockey in the United States with Washington at Buffalo, Philadelphia at the New York Rangers and Detroit at Minnesota. Also, in a meeting of the last two Stanley Cup champions, Pittsburgh visits Chicago.

    Feb. 21, Washington at Pittsburgh
Round 4 of Ovechkin vs. Crosby is a Monday night showdown at Consol Energy Center.

March 10, Montreal at St. Louis
Though he didn't reach the sainted status of Patrick Roy, Jaroslav Halak was certainly the most popular Slovak in Montreal last season, rescuing the team down the stretch and leading the Canadiens to playoff upsets of Washington and Pittsburgh before losing to Philadelphia in the conference final. He was traded to the Blues last week as he approaches restricted free agency on July 1.

    April 10
The final day of the NHL regular season schedule.

    April 13
The start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The last possible date for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final is June 17.

Schedule notes -- John MacLean makes his regular-season debut as the Devils' coach and Jason Arnott marks his return to the club Oct. 8 when New Jersey hosts Dallas. … Scott Arniel makes his regular-season debut as the Blue Jackets' coach against San Jose in Stockholm on Oct. 8 and makes his regular-season North America debut a week later against the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. … Guy Boucher makes his regular-season debut as coach of the Lightning when Tampa Bay hosts Atlanta Saturday, Oct. 9. … Tampa Bay has the season's longest homestand, 12 games from Jan. 23-Feb. 25, while Los Angeles faces the season's longest road trip, 10 games from Feb. 1-23. … The cross-state rivalry between Florida and Tampa Bay gets under way Oct. 16 when the Lightning provide the opposition for the Panthers in their home opener. The teams are led by new general managers -- Yzerman in Tampa and Dale Tallon in Florida. … The Ottawa Senators play their last 26 regular-season games against Eastern Conference opponents. … The Kings play their final 23 games against Western Conference, including the last five against Pacific Division opponents. … The Calgary Flames and Phoenix Coyotes both play their final 20 games against Western Conference opponents. … Carolina makes the latest North American home debut -- October 27 against Washington.

Plekanec inks a 6 years $30 million deal w/ a no trade clause. That's a big $5 million cap hit.

Cooke re-signed with the Pens....3 years for $1.8 million per year......Even though everyone hates him (with good reason) he is a valuable player for the Penguins and I am glad they will keep him around for a few more years.

23.4 mill tied up in Plekanec, Gomez, Gionta and Cammalerri.

Cammy can play for my team any day, but thats a ton of money tied up in 4 players when none of them are top tier guys.

Not to mention 4 picks in the top 60 and a guy with a ton of potential who was just drafted a year ago.

Morin can't skate, but hes a huge body with a filthy release. If he puts it together he can be a 30 goal guy but even if he doesn't, he can be pretty similar to Joffrey Lupul.

Now send Ladd to the Rangers.

Is he the kind of guy they could park in front of the net or does he not weigh enough for that? I know there is talk they may bring Jack Skille up next season who as I understand it is apparently really big and a complete asshole so they may be planning on him being Eager.

Funny you mention that, because thats what he needs to do if he wants to stick in the NHL.

Hes more of a sniper and is willing to drive to the net. Hes got a pretty nice frame to grow into (I believe hes 6'2" now and over 200 pounds.)

He can really shoot the puck though (He played before you started watching, but hes got a Petr Nedved type shot.) I just don't know if hes quick enough or smart enough to open up enough space to use that shot, he really struggled with that at the World Juniors, which gets back to my point that he needs to become adept at scoring garbage goals to reach his highest possible level as a player.

    Nabokov to the Flyers?

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=533023

According to a report by Tim Panaccio on CSNPhilly.com, the Philadelphia Flyers have made the first step toward possibly solving their goaltending issue, as they have acquired Evgeni Nabokov from the San Jose Sharks.

The reported deal would see the Flyers send a 2011 seventh-round pick to the Sharks if they can sign Nabokov before he becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Nabokov has a no-trade clause in his contract, but since the Sharks already have said they will not be offering him a new deal, the report says he is willing to waive it if a deal can be done with the Flyers.

I have doubts about a deal actually getting done with Nabby, but it would be cool to have the goaltending duo of the 2008-09 Sharks.

I'd love to see Chris Mason in Orange and Black if this doesn't work out.

Very excited, even though I think the Devils big moves are most likely to be in trades, just a great day due to all the uncertainty.

I think the Devils have a realistic shot and are serious about retaining Kovalchuk but I'd say its more unlikely than likely. Hear some speculation about LA being a good fit for him. What do you guys think?

Martin is definitely gone, his agent had some pretty telling quotes about how they weren't happy with how the organization handled his injury, and he was never one of the guys to appear to sip the kool-aid. I wonder where he ends up, maybe back home in Minnesota or a team like St. Louis.

Special thanks to Pandolfo, sad way to see his Devil career end but it is time. Best of luck to him! Forever a Devil in my mind.

Perfect fit IMO. Lots of young talent that can get over the top with a talent like him.

lol thats the 2nd time Paradis has been traded in the last 10 months.

Stalberg is the only guy worth anything in this deal. From what I saw the dude has a decent amount of Potential. Almost Johan Franzen like.

Versteeg is a good player though. He'll add some balls to the top 9 for the Leafs.

Because of their salary cap mess, the Chicago Blackhawks will miss the grit and scoring of both Dustin Byfuglien and Kris Versteeg.

I wonder who's next to go out of the Madhouse on Madison? I say Cristobal Huet.

No more gale force winds: Former Philadelphia Flyer and Carolina Hurricane captain Rod Brind'Amour retires
    http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=5343269

Brind'Amour was one of the best defensive forwards in the game and one of the healthiest.

I'm sure Flyer general manager at the time Bobby Clarke regrets trading Rod the Bod to Raleigh in exchange for Keith Primeau. I remember an ESPN the Magazine article when Clarke wanted to trade the Big E, Eric Lindros, to Carolina for Primeau.

Sure, Primeau had a magnificent run in the 2004 NHL playoffs as Flyers captain, but he ended his career due to post-concussion syndrome.

Meanwhile, Brind'Amour established himself as one of the best shutdown centers in the NHL and won a Stanley Cup in 2006 with the Canes. He was healthy throughout his career.

I like Stalberg, and he has potential (he's fast as anything), but Versteeg is younger and better (imho). I like the deal. DiDo could turn into something, but he's coming back from a pretty brutal injury. I don't know much about Sweatt, but I've heard that he's the best prospect in the deal.

Huet is going to be acquired by Rockford for cash because I don't know who in their right mind would take that off the Hakws hands for 5 mil per. The Versteeg trade opens another 3 million. The Hawks may have just cleared enough for Neimi, Ladd and Hjalmarsson.
"They go and target the Kanes and the Toews," Burish said. "That clown Burrows goes after Campbell. Give me a break, guys. If you want to target someone, come find me or come find Benny."

I should clarify, I meant Stalberg was the only thing worth anything going to Chicago from the Leafs. I like Versteeg a lot too. He fits the mold of what Burke looks for in a player and hes one cocky SOB!

The only thing I know about Sweatt is that hes got wheels.
