yankee hating act? because i didn't like their 2010 first round pick, i suddenly hate the yankees?

using hyperbole to back up an argument is terrible execution... try reading a few more books maybe?

What about Gardner? I'd say he's turned out to be a really solid pick by the Yankees. Not a superstar, but he's certainly turned into a solid starting CF and not a 4th OF'er.

Now you're reaching. The kid is raw. He's athletic. The Yankees saw him a lot and seem to think they found a gem, and to them he seemed like a guy they could sign for around slot that could make an impact. I hope they're right, but let's not pretend he's more than he is at this point.

So are half of the HS players everybody was pining for.

They are HSers for a reason. All these guys that everybody was pining for are still 2-3 years away.

I think he is playing a little above what should be expected from him as of now, but I hope I am wrong.

Seems to be a lot of conflicting scouting reports on this kid. Some are underwhelming. Some are exciting. It's going to take a couple of years to see if they made the right decision. Again, I hope this kid makes it big. He really seems like a great kid...

Onto the rest of the draft. Hopefully, they'll take some good risks with signability guys...

Gardner has pretty much "played above [his] ability" at every single level of baseball, from college to the Yankees. Even his 93 OPS+ from last season, while below average, is fine for a CF'er and he's well above that this year.

As for Culver, I don't know if he's going to be any good, but based on all of the articles that have been posted so far, I hope he turns out to be good. He loves the Yankees and has had a really tough time recently with his family .

what exactly is your point? that the yankees made some bad signings? and i can give you just as many bad signings, and counter them with good signings.

The consensus on these forums and most of the internet baseball community were that Joba and Hughes were "safe picks". I think people wanted some guy named Pedro Beato or something the year we picked Joba. The Orioles picked him that year.

In the year we picked Hughes people wanted Jered Weaver, but I think he was taken before us. There was another guy that was preferred to Hughes who hasnt amounted to anything yet, but I forget his name.

There's been a lot of scouting turnover, as well as the addition of crosscheckers since then. Not exactly the same coin at all.

Our relative knowledge about guys like Winn, and their projectability, are slightly different than a 17 year old who no one on here knew about before today.

Of course, I can remember people loving Drew Henson and Eric Duncan, so maybe you have a point.

BTW this kid has to be psyched. The dude was a projected 3rd-5th round pick, and was taken with the Yankees' first pick.

only hearsay, nothing substantial.. but with the way the IFA market played out last year and even this past ML FA period played out, it's implied that the teixeira contract has somewhat mandated cutbacks

i see this entire signing period as being lackluster

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think they've acknowledged they actually have a budget (vs. the glory days). Of course, by it's nature, any budget is restricted, and folks take the fact that we don't go crazy in outspending every team to mean the Yankees are being cheap.

I hope they are aggressive with overslot guys in the coming rounds.

And most people loved the Brackman pick considering Porcello was taken.

I understand being frustrated that we probably could have got one of the bigger names AND this guy. However this kid could still turn out to be an all star. Or maybe he doesnt even make the majors. Its almost impossible to know. The Yankees seem to like his skill set though and by all accounts he is an athletic dude who loves baseball.

75% of the picks tonight resided in the BA Top 57. That tells me they have a decent handle on where players are ranked.

Everybody wants the Yankees to look at shortstops in ifa, I think the Yankees just made a committment to shortstop in this draft. Maybe the Yankee scouts like Culver as much or more than the name ifa available on July 2nd.

The high late grades that Frankie said this kid had this spring is due to the development of his bat. 561 with nine homers in something like 70 at bats, 28 RBI's etc.

In the glory days, they were often conservative with their drafting. They used to take the easy college signs early and often. David Parrish, David Walling, and John Ford Griffin as examples. Their willingness to spend on the draft is more of a recent development. I certainly don't expect them to draft 10 signability guys, but I would hope that they grab a couple. Some of the best signability guys in recent years were signed for under $1 million. You don't need to kill the bank to get some talent...

I wouldn't make that bet - when the Yankees give the kid the YS tour, I predict he will be photographed, or at least speak to Jeter - and there will be proof of it. Probably this month.

My sources tell me the Yankees are planning to trade Culver to Philly for Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle.

Their willingness to spend on the draft is more of a recent development. I certainly don't expect them to draft 10 signability guys, but I would hope that they grab a couple. Some of the best signability guys in recent years were signed for under $1 million. You don't need to kill the bank to get some talent...
Yeah, I meant more that in the "glory days" they overspent budgets - you are right that they weren't aggressive draft wise. I like some of the guys they took in the later rounds last year and wouldn't mind seeing a repeat.

That could mean the Yankees sign the #1 pick for close to slot $1.mill, and later picks get close to that (2-5 picks they have).

I meant the internet community as a whole. BA and the like considered him a solid high upside pick.
