scottish football with rangers and celtic equates to the the coca-cola championship in england. without them, it's the division 1.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/...crank2010.html has Greece 12th and Scotland 16th out of 53 countries in UEFA. BB55's Take: Jose Mourinho as the new boss at Real Madrid
It's no surprise that Real Madrid hired a new boss and it's the Special One Jose Mourhino.
There is no question that Mourhino has a great track record.
However, I do have questions about this hiring in particular, Florentino Perez.
Since letting Vicente del Bosque go after Real Madrid won their 29th La Liga title, Perez decided to let the current Spanish national team manager go. From that point, Perez and five other RMCF Presidents including Ramon Calderon tried eight managers, but they won only three trophies combined.
Will Perez give the special one time or if RMCF go into a drought, will Perez give Mourinho his walking papers? Stability is the issue in the Spanish capital.
Another problem is Mourinho himself. Will he get along with Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Sergio Ramos, etc. Mourinho doesn't have his defensive parts. In fact, Real Madrid hasn't had a quality, stable defensive rock at midfield since Claude Makelele left.
So, let's see if this is a match made in heaven between the Special One and Real Madrid.

I'm not sure how many people follow them here (if any), but the Red Bulls had a nice win against Chivas tonight. They now have the third best record in the MLS, and once Henry arrives, I can easily see them contending for the title.
The gap in quality between Henry and his teammates is going to be shocking even at this stage of his career. I've watched a few of there games recently and they truly are crap. Even when they win they look like garbage. Youth academy players finish better than that Juan Pablo Angel guy or whatever his name is. Everyone talks about us needing star players to come over here and grow the game, that's not what we need. We need coaches to come over from Europe and teach American kids to play proper football. Not the awful variation they play in the MLS, actual legitimate intelligent football. We have a long way to go.Originally Posted by YanksFan1992
Yes, the MLS has a long way to go, but it's not like the quality of it is that of non-league play in England. I've been following the league for 3-4 years, and the strides it's made have been fantastic. Hopefully in 25-30 years the quality of play will be up there with some of the better leagues in the world (outside of England, Germany, Spain, Italy, etc. of course).Originally Posted by cyhughes22

Yeah it has certainly improved in the last few years but when I watch it I still feel like they're not playing the game the rest of the world plays. There's not all that much difference between the style of play in MLS and the style of play in the NCAA. You see glimpses in some games, usually by a foreign player but I can't help wondering what good growing the game is if we're not teaching the right game. There's no imagination in the American game. The passing is predictable and sloppy more often than not. I'm telling you, and I swear it isn't just my Arsenal bias, but this game would benefit much more from someone like Arsene Wenger or Pep Guardiola teaching coaches how to teach kids to play fluid football than to watch Thierry Henry shred inferior players in the twilight of his career. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to sound bitter towards U.S. Soccer. I love this country and I want it to do well in everything, but I just can't be happy when we're getting kids into these bad habits and calling it improvement.Originally Posted by YanksFan1992

VfL Bochum and Hertha BSC were directly relegated after finishing in the bottom two places. Bochum tied a current record with their sixth relegation from Germany's highest football league, ending a four-year tenure in the process, while Hertha BSC had to return to the second level after thirteen years.
The relegated teams were replaced by 1. FC Kaiserslautern, champions of the 2009–10 2. Bundesliga, and runners-up FC St. Pauli. Kaiserslautern returned to the Bundesliga after four years, and St. Pauli re-entered the top division after eight years.
A further place in the league was decided through a two-legged play-off. As in the previous year, 1. FC Nuremberg had to compete, although this time they were the Bundesliga team. FC Augsburg was the 2. Bundesliga's representative. As in the year before, Nuremberg won both matches on aggregate, 3–0, and defended their Bundesliga spot.

Seeding
The draws for the qualifying rounds, the play-off round and the group stage are all seeded based on the 2010 UEFA club coefficients. The coefficients are calculated on the basis of a combination of 20% of the value of the respective national association’s coefficient for the period from 2005–06 to 2009–10 inclusive and the clubs’ individual performances in the UEFA club competitions during the same period. Clubs are ordered by their coefficient and then divided into pots as required. For all of the stages before the quarter-finals, teams from the same association cannot be drawn against each other.
In the draws for the qualifying rounds and the play-off round, the teams are divided evenly into one seeded and one unseeded pot. The highest-ranked teams are put into the seeded pot and the lowest-ranked teams are put into the unseeded pot. A seeded team will be drawn against an unseeded team, with the order of legs in each tie also being decided randomly. Due to the limited time between matches, the draws for the second and third qualifying rounds take place before the results of the previous round are known. The seeding in each draw is carried out under the assumption that all of the highest-ranked clubs of the previous round are victorious. If a lower-ranked club is victorious, it simply takes the place of its defeated opponent in the next round. Moreover, in the third qualifying round and play-off round, champion clubs and non-champion clubs are kept separated.
In the draw for the group stage, the 32 teams are split into 4 pots of 8 teams. The title holder and the 7 highest-ranked teams are put in Pot 1, the next 8 highest-ranked teams are put in Pot 2, the next 8 teams are put in Pot 3, and the next 8 in Pot 4. The teams are then drawn into 8 groups (labelled A-H) of 4 teams. The draw is controlled in order to split teams of the same national association evenly between Groups A-D and Groups E-H, which play on different matchdays.
In the draw for the first knockout stage, the 8 group winners are seeded, and the 8 group runners-up are unseeded. A seeded team will be drawn against an unseeded team, with the seeded team hosting the second leg. Teams from the same group or the same association cannot be drawn against each other.
In the draws for the quarter-finals onwards, there are no seedings, and teams from the same group or the same association may be drawn with each other.

The winners of the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League, Atlético Madrid, were guaranteed an entry into the group stage of the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League, as they did not qualify for any stage of the 2010–11 UEFA Champions League. However, they also qualified for the Europa League third qualifying round through domestic performance, as they were the runners-up of the 2009–10 Copa del Rey to Champions League-qualified Sevilla. As a result, this place in the third qualifying round was vacated, which in turn led to the following changes to the default allocation system in order to compensate for this vacant spot:
* The domestic cup winners of association 28 (Finland) have been promoted from the second qualifying round to the third qualifying round.
* The domestic cup winners of associations 52 and 53 (Malta and San Marino) have been promoted from the first qualifying to the second qualifying round.

A Europa League place is vacated when a team qualifies for both the Champions League and the Europa League, or qualifies for the Europa League by more than one method. When a place is vacated, it is redistributed within the national association by the following rules:
* When the domestic cup winners (considered as the "highest-placed" qualifiers within the national association) also qualify for the Champions League, their Europa League place is vacated, and the remaining Europa League qualifiers are moved up one place, with the final place (with the earliest entrance) taken by the domestic cup runners-up, provided they do not already qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League. Otherwise, this place is taken by the highest-placed league finishers that have not yet qualified for the Europa League.
* When the domestic cup winners also qualify for the Europa League through league position, their place through the league position is vacated, and the Europa League qualifiers that finish lower in the league are moved up one place, with the final place taken by the highest-placed league finishers that have not yet qualified for the Europa League.
* A place vacated by the League Cup winners is taken by the highest-placed league finishers that have not yet qualified for the Europa League.
* A Fair Play place is taken by the highest-ranked team in the domestic Fair Play table that has not yet qualified for the Champions League or the Europa League.

Notes
*England (ENG): Portsmouth, the runners-up of the 2009–10 FA Cup to Champions League-qualified Chelsea, did not obtain a UEFA licence, meaning they could not qualify for Europe. Portsmouth had appealed to UEFA, the Premier League and the English FA, but the latter two would not allow late applications for the License. As a result, the seventh-placed team of the 2009–10 Premier League, Liverpool, claimed the Europa League spot in the third qualifying round.
*Republic of Ireland (IRL): Since the third- and fourth-placed teams of the 2009 League of Ireland, Cork City and Derry City, were dissolved and expelled from the league respectively after the season was completed, the fifth-placed team, Dundalk, claimed the Europa League spot in the first qualifying round.
*Lithuania (LTU): Vėtra, the runners-up of the 2009 A Lyga and also the runners-up of the 2009–10 Lithuanian Football Cup to Champions League-qualified Ekranas, were denied the UEFA license for the 2010–11 season and therefore will not represent Lithuania in the UEFA Europa League. As a result, all Europa League spots were awarded to teams based on their league positions. Therefore, the fourth-placed team, Šiauliai, were moved from the first qualifying round to the second qualifying round, while the fifth-placed team, Tauras Tauragė, claimed the Europa League spot in the first qualifying round.

For all of the stages before the round of 16, teams from the same association cannot be drawn against each other.
Prior to these draws, UEFA may form "groups" in accordance with the principles set by the Club Competitions Committee, but they are purely for convenience of the draw and do not resemble any real groupings in the sense of the competition.
In the draw for the group stage, the 48 teams are split into 4 pots of 12 teams. The title holder (if participating) and the 11 (12 if title holder not participating) highest-ranked teams are put in Pot 1, the next 12 highest-ranked teams are put in Pot 2, the next 12 teams are put in Pot 3, and the next 12 in Pot 4. The teams are then drawn into 12 groups of 4 teams.
In the draw for the first knockout stage, the 12 group winners and the 4 better third-placed teams from the Champions League group stage (based on their match record in the group stage) are seeded, and the 12 group runners-up and the other 4 third-placed teams from the Champions League group stage are unseeded. A seeded team will be drawn against an unseeded team, with the seeded team hosting the second leg. Teams from the same group or the same association cannot be drawn against each other.
In the draws for the round of 16 onwards, there are no seedings, and teams from the same group or the same association may be drawn with each other.

Even though I was exhausted, I'm glad I stayed up to watch the game. They're playing the quarterfinal at a smaller stadium a bit south of the city, but if tickets are available, I'll definitely try to go.Originally Posted by BroadwayBomber55
