I liked the Blackpool poster already ranting about you and it's only the first match of the season.

I have two words for the Blackpool poster: Hull City.

    That's right.

Hull City started guns blazing in their first nine games of the 2008-09 season losing only once including wins over Arsenal in the Emirates and Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane before reality set in and were almost relegated.

To be fair, though, I would take take Schwarzer over Given because I think he is a better all round goalkeeper. This week should see a resolution because after Almunia's "performance" at Anfield this afternoon, Arsenal might as well forget their title ambitions for this year if they decide keep the pillock between the sticks again this season.

Hope you are keeping well, old lad. Weather has turned to sh*t over here, just in time for the height of summer. Well, what can you do, other than keep taking the pills?
Owen Coyle said it all , Nash, when he commented that Schwarzer wasn't missed.

As for Mark , funny , isn't it , not that long ago Fulham appeared to be one of very few teams - maybe the only one - willing to use him as their no. 1 keeper , but now it seems that the club isn't big enough for his ambitions. For what it's worth , I'd love to see him go , take a chance on Stockdale , and then use the ££££ to sign someone to upgrade the awful Dickson Etuhu. No harm dreaming , eh ?

What about Everton ? They started slowly last year but they had all kinds of injuries, which isn't the case now , I believe.

As for me , I'm fine , ta , after one or two problems . Yourself ?

And what about those miling 3-Y-Os ? They seem to keep flooring their elders .

Almunia is so awful, it's really sad. If Fulham don't want Schwarzer, send him to Arsenal, a stack of tires would screw up less than Almunia

It's either Mark Schwarzer or Shay Given according to former Arsenal goalkeeping legend David Seaman

Mark Schwarzer definitely made a move in the right direction when he got out of Middlesbrough a few years ago and it would now appear that, sadly, he has loftier aims. Still, I agree with you that any lucre achieved achieved on selling the Aussie could be profitably spent on a replacement for the like of Etuhu, who was crap at Preston, and has done absolutely nothing since to prove even a poor judge like me wrong!!

Yes, expectations were high before Saturday that following last year's poor start (major injuries had huge effect), it would be better this time about. However, as one fan said after the game at Blackburn: "Different season, same sh*t"!! They do have a bit of quality in the team, having managed to retain their "best" players, and I would hope for a finish somewehere in the region of sixth. Perhaps a tad optimistic at this stage but it's no good getting depressed after a first game defeat at a midden like Ewood Park!!

Fulham expectations this season, having seen your manager sail off into the night during the off season? (Not sure it was a good idea of Mr. Hodgson's, to be honest, because whilst he did a great job at the Cottage, he didn't exactly get it right at Blackburn, did he?) Still, it has to be said that it's good to have a proper sportsman in charge again across Stanley Park because I think most of us (and not all of an Everton persuasion) were glad to see the back of that odius, condescending, Spanish bastard, Rafael Benitez, when he upped sticks from Liverpool and buggered off to Inter Milan.

Yes, it's been a strange kind of season, as highlighted at Deauville yesterday with Goldikova's defeat. York Ebor meeting starts tomorrow so shall get myself upstairs and comfortable in front of the television in readiness for the four day extravaganza. RVW for the International, per chance?

Yeah , a proper person , but I've been wondering for some time now whether Roy is indeed a top boss or just one of those managers who's capable of getting a tune out of not very much . Perhaps he's both . No doubt we'll be a little wiser in a few months.

Glad to learn that you're doing okay . But hospitals , don't mention them. I too have seen too much of them recently - I went arse over bollocks a little while back in a fall , breaking quite a few bones , which resulted in me being hospitalized , hence why I haven't been around.

EPL FT Scores: August 16, 2010

Three points in the bag for Manchester United.

The Red Devils, thanks to goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs, defeated Newcastle United, who return to the top level after winning the Championship, 3-0.

The Magpies just can't get the ball of United led by Paul Scholes who was the maestro at central midfield.

Well, I picked Everton to finish 7th, so a possible chance for European football for the Merseyside Toffees.

I think it will be the same thing again for David Moyes and Everton, start slow and then, get hot once the new year rolls around.

Can Mikael Arteta be effective before his injury layoff? Can Jermaine Beckford, the dynamo striker who helped Leeds United get back to the Championship, take some of the scoring load off Louis Saha, Yakubu and Tim Cahill?

Terribly sorry to hear about that, Humph. I know we would be lost without institutions such as hospitals, but they can be very wearing on one's peace of mind. Anyway, sincerely hope that they managed to put you back together in one piece and that the pain from the injuries has gradually waned. Fortunately, apart from my innumerable "day trips" to the various clinics and procedural tables, I have managed to stay away from incarceration for the past two years by the skin of my teeth.

As I think we all expected, it's going to be a very long season for West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United and Blackpool. The gulf between the Championship and the Premier League widens each year and as none of the three promoted teams has added significantly to their playing staffs over the summer, I suspect that they are the logical choices to fall through the trap door at the end of the current campaign. Newcastle could possibly grind it out at the expense of Wigan or somebody of that ilk and save their skins. Long way to go and this weekend's trip by Blackpool to Arsenal looks an amusing match up to me. Talk about a contrast in styles!

    Truth will out!

I was thoroughly disappointed with Arsenal yesterday and they should have gone home empty-handed.

Again, Newcastle have Championship players and certainly not enough quality to test probably 75% of the Premiership clubs. No significant investment means that they are using the same players as last year. Good enough for the division below, but not the top flight.

Milner is in the same situation as Lescott and the other mercenaries: he's only going for the money. City aren't going to win the league in the foreseeable future because they have not invested in world class players, merely good ones. Building a championship team doesn't happen overnight and they have a long way to go to get into that sort of position.

Unless Manchester City proves that buying quality world class talent alone is not going to give them success, they will continue their trophyless drought.

Look at Florentino Perez and Real Madrid.

Sure they had initial success with his first modern Galacticos era by winning the La Liga titles in 2000–01 and 2002–03 and the UEFA Champions League 2001-02, but long term failures and bonehead mistakes including sacking Vicente del Bosque and letting Claude Makelele go to Chelsea did them in.

    Maybe I am.

Anyways, continuing our conversation about Manchester United, I think Manchester United needs that creative force in midfield.

Paul Scholes did a great job tonight, but he's not going to be there forever.

Michael Carrick can be hot and cold.

Someone like a Mesut Ozil can help.

Also, I think Dimitar Berbatov, if performs like that like what he did against Newcastle United tonight all, he, Javier Hernandez, Federico Macheda and Michael Owen can help out Wayne Rooney in attack. Gotta be more ruthless on goal.

Very glad to hear that your trips to these places are only on a day trip basis. Me , I felt like a bit of a fraud being in there . Just got up at the wire , I see.

Back to the footy even if it is with a sad twist , I notice that Jimmy Conway - my boyhood footballing hero - is being honoured with a testimonial out in Oregon. Apparently Jim has been diagnosed with dementia. A pretty decent winger was Jim. And with Les Barrett on the other flank , Fulham used to have two dangerous wide players . Shame Steve Earle , who played up the middle , was so crap - Jim and Les would set it up and Steve would blast it into the Thames.

Poor bastards is very true. Five years ago, I had to attend a world famous Cardiothoracic Centre and during the course of one of the procedures they nearly succeeded in seeing me off, courtesy of the inadvertent induction of a heart attack! Bugger me (as they say in Wales!) the procedure wasn't being done under anaesthetic so I was aware of the whole episode!!! You've never seen the morphine get thrust into somebody's body so quick in your life! Still here to tell the tale, thankfully, which is more than be can be said for many less fortunate sods I've encountered on my many forays into such places. Never feel a fraud, Humph, because I'm sure your injuries were worth every dollar they soaked from you! At least I've never had to "pay for it", i.e. "treatment", except via taxation!

Very sad to hear about Jimmy Conway, contracting such a crappy illness at such a relatively young age. (He's only a few years older than me.) Hope the testimonial goes well, incidentally.

Any "inside information" on the Schwarzer front (the more I think of it, the more I don't see Manchester City letting Shay Given go to Arsenal) or is Arsene Wenger still procrastinating about whether or not to spend a few bob on a half-decent 'keeper? Huge respect for Wenger but he always gives me the feeling that he spends Arsenal's money (sparingly) like it's his own!

"I hope he can stay," Mancini said. "But I respect his decision if he wants to leave."

I can't see Arsenal going the whole season with Almunia. He's awful. Arsenal are not serious title contenders without a real keep and another central defender.

You're also missing a pain in the ass ball winning midfielder and a striking partner for Robert van Persie.

Just rumours ,Nash. Sod all worth repeating.

Moving on ,another missing player at the moment , allegedly injured (yeah ,right ), is Paul Konchesky. I don't think it's any secret that he too wants to move on . Just rumours again , but every time Paul's name crops up Roy's appears in the same sentence. I wouldn't know about such things , but would Konch be a fit - wanted, even - at Anfield ?

I have to confess that, apart from hearing a report on "Sky Sports News" a few weeks ago, I haven't seen Konchesky's name in print being linked with Liverpool. I haven't the faintest idea of how the "opposition" is off for full backs (or whatever they're called these days!) so whether the lad is needed there is a moot point. I gave up reading the "soccer gossip" columns, as faithfully reproduced here by Broadway, some years ago as most of the "news" is absolute bollocks and I find I can utilise my time more wisely reading the more august columns of the "Racing Post"!!

The YO looks a very attractive renewal at The Knavesmire tomorrow. Ground still on the quick side for the favourite but it should be a could set-to against the likes of Midday and SQ.

I am not a huge fan of James Milner and couldn't understand all the angst about whether or not he would move from Villa to Manchester City. I do feel for Villa fans, though, because they've now seen two of their best two players, Milner and Barry, shove off to City purely for the money, which is exactly the same scenario that really pissed Evertonians off with Joleon Lescott at this time last year. (Everton got the better of that deal because there is no way in the world Lescott was worth in excess of £20 million.)

Best of luck to Milner, but, personally, I don't see City as a title contender either this season or next.

I also don't see Manchester City winning a trophy for a while when you also have Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and big brother Manchester United duking it out to see who will win the most silverware in this decade.

Perhaps it's all bollocks. All I know is that if he does go ,wherever it may be , Stephen Kelly , the player who played left back at the Reebok , is no replacement for Paul.

Yes, it looks some race , but I'm a little surprised you think that the going could be on the quick side for Sariska - she has decent form on the quick , to my eyes .And I see that she's 3 for 3 against Midday. Perhaps Ed Dunlop's filly is the danger to Sariska. We shall see.

Since reading your response, I've done a bit of research in the local "rags", Humph, and come up with sweet f.a., I regret to say. I think it fairly inevitable when a manager moves that he is linked to players of former club and that's probably what happened in this instance. If I see anything new, I'll pass it on.

Handler has always maintained she is much better with cut in the ground, hence my reservation when I picked her (and lost!) to DRM in our "York 2009 Tipping Competition"!! She is high class on any ground but tomorrow I am more afraid of SQ, who keeps surprising me, more than the Cecil runner. As you infer, time will tell.

I like Chamakh...I think he will end up being exactly what Arsenal needed. Agreed on a ball winning midfielder...Diaby actually does win the ball and it's hard to push him off it but he makes so many poor decisions...holding the ball too long, making poor passes...he gives the ball away in the worst parts of the field

Humph, I really must start getting a life because after my initial post, stating lack of knowledge about Konchesky's possible move from Fulham to Liverpool, I accidentally stumbled over this smidgeon of news from today's online edition of the "Daily Mirror"!

    http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news...cle557159.html

Take it for what it's worth. Enough for tonight! I think I'll now go and rest my weary bones, such are the delights of being 5 hours ahead of you in the States! Take it easy and hope that the bumps and bruises incurred during your recent altercation with gravity are becoming easier to bear with the passage of time!

Some managers seem to like buying players they know - and trust . Plus Paul , like Schwarzer , wasn't considered for the game at the Reebok , so it wouldn't be the biggest shock if there is some truth in this story, imo.

I've just seen the result of the Nunthorpe - wouldn't mind the trifecta on that a few times.
