    2010-11 English Club Football/Soccer Thread

After the successful debut of covering all four top levels of English Club Football/Soccer (yes, the EPL, Championship, League One and League Two) and the FA and Football League Cups, it's time for another season.

From the summer transfer markets during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in June to the final whistles in the Football League Play-Offs in May-June 2011, you can talk shop about it.

I'm just praying that Gerrard and Torres will still be with us in two months.

I don't know about Torres yet. There aren't that many clubs who can afford him. I think that only Chelsea has a realistic chance if they are willing to spend the money. Spain is out of options for him, Barça just bought Villa and he isn't going to Real since he is a Atletico kid.

I think you're forgetting Manchester City! Sure, not a glamour club yet (they need to buy top notch players and get rid of some of the dross they bought last year) but can offer the likes of Torres a shed load of money. Money is no object to the owner and City probably have better chance of success in next year's Europa League, due to the fact that they will be buying players to strengthen their squad during the off-season, than his current, financially-challenged club.

Liverpool have given the clearest indication yet that Rafael Benítez's six-year spell in charge is drawing to a close by offering their manager £3m to leave Anfield. It is believed the Spaniard, entitled to £16m if sacked this summer, has been offered the lesser sum to quit with immediate effect.
Not sure why Benitez would take that deal.

Article also links Gerrard to Real Madrid.

Good. Barcelona's arrogance in this situation is profound. If Arsenal is really going to sell him, sell really, really high.

On another note, I really like the addition of Marouane Chamakh. He's pacy, athletic, strong, good in the air...qualities that Arsenal sorely need up front.

He would be an idiot not to sit tight on this one. Mind you, with the apparent lack of cash available for summer signings, I suppose he might decide to cut his losses and make a run for it. All conjecture at this point, though.

On a more serious note, Spruce, I see that PNE are having little local difficulty with H.M. Revenue and Customs. The following link doesn't provide much information but, make no mistake, the club is in serious financial trouble:

It's really very sad. As an Arsenal fan he'll be one less thing we have to worry about but I can't in all conscience as a fan of the game be happy about the dire straits those idiots have put Liverpool in financially. It's really very tragic and I feel for Liverpool supporters. I just can't see him staying to play in the Europa League. If we were to sell Fabregas he'd be the guy would want us to buy but I can see Liverpool accepting a big bid from City if he's willing to go and play there.

I'm glad we're finally showing some backbone. If the want to pony up crazy money for him like 60-65 million then fine let the lad go and completely revamp the squad but other than that he needs to stay if only to send them a message.

This ain't the first time Preston North End was in financial trouble.

I remember at one point, PNE almost went to the Gola League and out the Football League in 1986 when they were re-elected.

I don't know what to think at the moment, I guess I'll post some thoughts if/when it becomes official.

Sky are reporting it. I think Liverpool would do better by changing the culture of the club entirely. Get a good strong British manager in there and focus on developing young British talent. Benitez was just not a very good evaluator of talent. He spent a lot of money to go nowhere and it has cost him his job. Better off making a really big change now when it's really needed. I would hold off on players from Spain for a while because inevitably they want to go back eventually. They're going to have to try and tread water until their ownership/debt situation is resolved one way or the other so it's going to be tough but I imagine they'll pull through somehow.

The biggest problem you guys had last year is that it was a 2 man team and if 1 or both had a dip in form or an injury you couldn't produce anything. It might be for the best if he goes.

The thing is, our owners might just pocket the money and not buy any decent players in return. If we had to lose Torres in order to buy a number of quality players, it wouldn't be the end of the world, but I'm terribly worried that Gerrard and Torres will be sold and no one will be bought to replace them.

When a club is 470 million in debt and its best players are considering their futures...sacking the manager doesnt seem like the smartest thing in the world to do.

Now as for selling Gerrard. The money will go to paying off debt so the team gets worse and you cant even attempt to cover up the hole he will leave.
And if Gerrard leaves, then Torres will leave soon after...then Mascherano...then whoever else who feels they can get a big money move.

Right now we need a miracle and it starts with getting rid of those 2 bloodsuckers that they call owners.
    After that, who knows.

Like I said before it's a disgraceful situation and even as the fan of obviously a rival club it makes me sick to my stomach to think of what's been done to such a historic club. I really feel for you guys.

Well, looking on the bright side of things, when we're in the championship we can finally win a domestic title again.

The only thing I'm hanging on to is the possibility that this was prerequisite for a sale (the new owners didn't want to pay his fee), or that Gerrard and Torres had turned against him.

But both of those possibilities are rather doubtful, so yeah, this sucks.

It might be good for you guys. You need someone who is going to make the most of transfers given your financial situation. A clone of Arsene Wenger who can keep you respectable on a tight budget is what the club should be looking for. You guys probably won't want to hear this but I think the only shot you guys have in the short term of getting back in the top 4 is if maybe another middle eastern businessman with some oil money comes in and absorbs the debt.

sadly, this can be considered a step in the right direction. as i've said many times, i have never really believed we'd win the title under benitez. he did a lot of good for our club but when it comes down to it, he didn't do well enough. too many average players were bought. i dislike changing managers because it means you have to start again but at least we have some chance of keeping torres and gerrard now. unfortunately, this is a good move for us. the best move of course won't come until hicks and gillette are out. we've always lived on the buble of the champions' league and while spurs and man city have put pressure on it, we burst it ourselves.

I also think Arsenal need to add a player or two in the swap.

Arsenal could've gotten Yaya Toure along with the transfer fee for Cesc Fabregas.

But at the same time, the Gunners lose out on their best player.

as much as i love the king, he isn't the right choice and he knows it. i'd have loved it to be martin o'neill or david moyes five or six years ago but that ain't happen either. at this moment, i't gonna take shankly himself to get us back up there.

Somehow I just don't see them accepting Yaya Toure. Arsene could have signed him years ago when he brought him in for a trial and he didn't rate him. I don't imagine his mind has changed all that much even though he's developed into a good player. I think he still has his eye on Melo.

I don't think Felipe Melo is the right choice for defensive midfield at the Emirates.

Melo had a great start with Juventus, but then tailed off after his elbow on Inter Milan's Mario Balotelli in December 2009 started the tailspin for Juve.

I heard from Tommy Smyth via ESPN Soccernet Press Pass that he wants Steve Nichol from the MLS's New England Revolution as Liverpool's next boss.

The former Liverpool defender has done a nice job with the Revs leading them to a Lamar Hunt US Open Cup win in 2007 and were MLS Runners-Up four times: 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007.

I agree. I just don't see Wenger swallowing his pride and accepting a player he already deemed not good enough. I also don't see Yaya Toure wanting to come here with that in mind. Plus if there's anything Wenger loves more than signing young talent it's reclamation projects at a discount. Melo is right up his alley, a guy he rated who hasn't impressed at his current club who he may be able to get for a lower price. Honestly I don't want him buying anyone until he knows for sure what he's doing with Cesc. If Cesc leaves he needs to buy Gourcuff and a box to box midfielder and if Cesc stays he needs someone defensive minded who's decent technically to sit next to song behind Cesc.

No need to kick them while they're down. I wouldn't wish Tom Hicks on anyone....except the Red Sox and Spuds.

Chris Nolan did it again. Inception is the best movie of the year so far.

If Real Madrid don't want him and he's got a soul he'll be playing for Chelsea next year. Those scumbag owners of theirs will have to accept the bid with the mess they're in. Christ the thought of him and Drogba together is absolutely terrifying.
