    Dyson Air Multiplier

These are very cool - spotted one in the store yesterday:

    http://www.dyson.com/fans/

Dyson's made a fan that ... doesn't have any blades. Just a big open circle.

Of course I think they miscalculated as to what people would be willing to pay for this - they were on sale for $300. Unless it somehow kills mosquitoes at the same time, that seems way too much.

That does look impressive, but I agree, it needs a mosquito killing function. It doesn't seem like it would be a big deal to add electric field technology in the ring so that mosquitoes would be sucked in and then fall dead into a pile on the leeward side.

It's the Mac of fans, of course Sal would start a thread about this.

What a breakthrough. The worst thing about a standard fan is the unpleasant buffeting.

No Sam, if it were the Mac of fans, it would be worth the money. Jackass.

They sell these at my job. The "annoying buffeting" comment is annoying itself, especially since there's a dvd loop promoting the fan. The display we have looks cool, but it doesn't feel like it emits that much air even at its max setting.

    Lies.

Up to 5.28 gallons of air per second is drawn in by an energy-efficient, brushless motor.
Sounds like there are blades of some sort to me! They're just hidden from view. It's essentially a mini-compressor which creates an airflow that moves nearby air with it.

Yes, there is a motor AJ, thank you. I didn't mean to suggest this device works on magic, but I'm sorry you interpreted it that way.

That comment was more directed at Dyson and their "no blades" line.

    Re: Dyson Air Multiplier

    It "multiplies" and "amplifies" air?

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

It makes new molecules AND makes them bigger!

I think the notion is that there simply aren't blades directly pushing the air.

They're not. But fan blades are a pain to clean.

Dyson's also pointing to the buffeting they create, which doesn't seem like that big a deal to me.

It's kind of a neat little concept, but at the end of the day, it's hard to see the big upside. As for their vacuum cleaners, OTOH...

They should make a vacuum that vacuums by itself. It should be shaped like a flying saucer. We'd make millions.

I assume the hidden blades on this thing would be even harder to clean. Shame on you for starting this thread.

Did you miss the part where I said the price was way too much?

300 dollars for a fan!? No thanks.
