Thread: Ubaldo Jimenez

  1. #1

    Ubaldo Jimenez

Now has a sub 1 ERA in 9 games started. Also has a No No

This guy is absolutely unreal. Upstaging Greinke's early 09. Pitching at Coors field, and he has only given up one homer in 63 innings. He is just that hard to hit home runs off of. Imagine if he didn't walk people?

so my pre-season prediction of him as Cy-young winner in the NL isn't looking so crazy now

    Re: Ubaldo Jimenez

I have this guy on my fantasy team. I've always known him to be a quality pitcher with insane stuff but it's so much fun to see how much of a corner he has turned this year.

I just pray he can stay healthy all year, on a selfish note, I'm super exicted to have drafted him this year...I've found my new keeper to replace Johan on my staff since I will NOT be keeping him again this year. I discovered two new keepers this year in my draft, Heyward and Ubaldo. Lincecum may finally have his first real legitimate challenge for the Cy Young now.

    Re: Ubaldo Jimenez

I took him in the equivalent of the 6th round of my draft (since we have 3 keepers). I was looking at the numbers between Jiminez and Jered Weaver. I took a stab with Jiminez and I'm glad I did. He's also been lucky to get pretty good run support, so he's racking up the W's...but between their similarity in IP and K's...Jiminez has a better WHIP, despite the fact that he walks more people than you'd like.

It's just been a fun year. I hope he can keep it going.

I took him in the ninth round of my draft. I almost passed over him for somebody else too.

    This guy's numbers are seriously unreal for 2 months into a season: 515 ERA+, 0.1 HR/9, 5.3 H/9, 7 ER in 71.1 IP.
    Javy Vazquez's 2010 non-Cy Young season: 4-10, 7.15 ERA, 140 Ks, 170 IP.

    Re: Ubaldo Jimenez

Ugh... if not for Grienke's slow start and his no no, he'd be on my fantasy team. I was working out a deal for him (the guy who owns him had him still stashed in his minors) and was being asked to give up Weiters. I e-mailed back saying I'd part with Weiters. That night Jimenez tossed his no-no and Grienke lost another start so he decided to just activate Ubaldo and keep him for himself

I'd say it's even more than almost impossible. It's happened once in MLB history (with over 150 IP), Dutch Leonard in 1914 had an ERA of 0.96 in 224.2 IP, funny that ERA only equated to an ERA+ of 279, whereas today it would equate to an ERA+ of over 500 or so. My how the times have changed.
    Javy Vazquez's 2010 non-Cy Young season: 4-10, 7.15 ERA, 140 Ks, 170 IP.

very true, as much as i'd like to see it its probably impossible. But at this rate he'd need a bad injury or serious meltdown not to win the NL Cy Young

He's obviously the frontrunner by a lot, but it wouldn't take a major meltdown. If, for example, he, Halladay, Wainwright and Lincecum each performed for the rest of the season as they did in 2009, they'd all finish with very similar numbers to each other. So he could pitch quite well the rest of the way and still find himself with pretty serious competition. (Though I do think he'll win it).

Ubaldo is so uber it's unbelievable. Another Complete Game Shutout of the Giants today. He's 10-1 with a 0.78 ERA. I'm surprised they let him throw 128 pitches, but I guess that fuggin cannon of his laughs at pitch counts. Dude's putting a stranglehold on the NL CYA. Halladay's consistency might be the only real threat at this point.

Todd Helton's .376/.329/.705 is costing them $2MM more than that entire contract (not including the 2014 option).

To be honest, I think you'll have to wait a while for accurate data. With all the hype, i feel like the gun at Nationals Park is gonna be juiced for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if you see him sitting 98-99 deep into starts on his home gun.'

edit: and i fully expect him to hit 100 during the first batter he faces

True, although we'll get the right data on pitchfx which is separate from the home radar gun from what I know.

I think Jimenez will have the higher overall velocity. From his starts I've watched in the minors, seems like Strasburg sits mostly 94/95. Jimenez's FB velocity is averaging 96 this year. That's ridiculous.

NewPedro? I know it's early to declare it, but he reminds me of him in terms of velocity, stuff, and the amazement and joy I get out of watching Jimenez pitch. I'll be catching as many of his starts as they air out here. Ubaldo Jimenez is my new baseball crush.

EDIT: No offense to Clay, who has been almost as fun to watch this year AND plays for my home team. Buchholz, Lester, Jimenez, Price, Hughes, Marcum, Kershaw, Halladay, Weaver, and Lincecum are giving fans of great pitching a lot to enjoy so far this season. It's probably not any better or worse than normal from a statistical standpoint, but it seems like an absolute wealth of incredibly fun pitchers to watch.

    Re: Ubaldo Jimenez

Jiminez had a rough first inning. Thanks to a Tulowitzki error he had to throw 30 pitches to escape the first in a bases loaded jam but did so with a GIDP...to get out without giving up a run...awesome, he's up 3-0 in the middle of the 6th now...he actually rebounded quite nicely with some pretty economical pitching after that to get to the 6th with around 82 pitches.

How unbelievable is this guy? I have come to LOVE him even more because he's on my fantasy team but this guy just doesn't get enough national coverage for what he's really doing right now...imagine if some overhyped stiff like Beckett was doing this? They'd be polishing his HOF plaque right now. Jiminez is not only the best pitcher in the game, he's in the argument for best player in the game and he only plays once every 5 days...it's one of those years he's having, so far.

EDIT: He's through 6 full innings now, no runs allowed...but at 93 pitches. If Tracy has any guts at all and any value for this stud, he should just pull him for the pen. He threw 128 pitches last time out...don't let this guy end up on an operating table so you can stay above .500

EDIT 2: Tracy of COURSE sent him out for the 7th, he got through unscathed, 7IP 0R 4H 2BB 8K's and threw 106 pitches. He's unbelievable but Tracy's going to work this guy into the ground I believe.
