The pitching matchups are heavily in Boston's favor except for Saturday.
"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston."

Yanks take 3 of 4. Sox are done. Tito has managed this team marvelously given their ridiculous run of injuries, and I give them credit for hanging in there, but I think they are done.

They still have their pitching lined up pretty well for the series, and anything can, and usually does, happen in these games. I mean, we just lost 2 of 3 from Toronto....

Their playoff odds are at 12.9%, I'm not sure if it's taking into account that they won't have their best player for a while, if at all this season.

The revisionist history is still strong in RSN:

And then there was the time last August, when Kevin Youkilis took matters in his own hands after being hit for the second straight game and 10th time this season, charging the mound and heaving his helmet at the Tigers' Rick Porcello, a 20-year-old rookie who wanted no part of the fight.

Tom Caron (NESN reporter, I believe) on Twitter:

Youkilis will get surgery tomorrow, Francona just confirmed.
Francona says there is no chance Youkilis can return this season - regular season or post-season.
Hate to say this, just for the karma, buuut, for the Sox - what postseason?
    Likes the Yankees.

If Francona said for the rest of the season, the obvious follow up would have been, "what if you make the post season". He probably just beat them to the punch.

What Porcello wanted no part of was the helmet that Wussilis was aiming at him. Porcello put the smack down on him.

The Sox are still alive if they can manage to take 3 out of 4 this weekend. Anything less and I think the writing is on the wall...unless TB starts unraveling soon.

I don't care what the pitching matchups might be, with no Pedroia and Youkilis in the lineup, I'm not overly optimistic.

from the other DB Red Sox files:

"It really stinks," Youkilis said. "[This injury] is very rare. Zero athletes have had it, at least as far as the doctors have said. It was a freak accident. I don't know how it happened or the reason behind it. It just happened."
Zero athletes have ever had it? did he see every doctor in the world? what a dumb statement.

"If there is a silver lining, it is that it is pretty routine surgery," Epstein said. "He'll be back to 100 percent, and have a normal offseason."
    but that's only for non-athletes.

Never count the Red Sox out in this early stage. A series can turn a team around. The Yankees sure look much better on paper but they just lost a series to the Jays, which is worse than the Red Sox. If the Rays can score with only two good hitters in the lineup, the Red Sox can do the same. The key is their pitching.

I agree, the Red Sox aren't to be taken lightly despite all their injuries. I'm impressed with how well they've managed to play with a AAAA lineup. Though I think their playoff chances are just about out the window, it's too early to celebrate and too dangerous to assume the weekend will be a cakewalk.

    Still, let's take 3 of 4.

Re: Red Sox Thread Version 5.0

Future Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez, who enjoyed one of the great peaks of any pitcher in baseball history, recently agreed to take a few questions from me. He did so as part of the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Summer Job program.

Dayn Perry: You said at the end of the 2009 World Series that you weren’t retiring. So when are you coming back?

Pedro Martinez: (Laughs) That’s a great question. I thought I was going to be back but it didn’t happen. So I decided to go on vacation with my kids. I’m still open to whatever happens, though.

DP: So you’re willing to play in 2011 under the right circumstances?

PM: I think so, I’m thinking that way. I’d say I’m 50/50 on playing next season.

...DP: Do you miss Dan Shaughnessy?

PM: No, no, no. That’s the only thing I don’t miss about Boston. I’m pretty sure other players feel that way, too.

I wonder if this experience will force Youk to alter his grip and swing a little bit. Although I've seen guys with an overhead approach (I even tried that in college to get rid of a hitch in my swing) he's got one of the most unorthodox grips I have ever seen. Look kinda like a grabbing a garden tool.
