    From the 30for30 website:

An unprecedented documentary series featuring thirty films from some of today’s finest storytellers. Each filmmaker will bring their passion and personal point of view to their film detailing the issues, trends, athletes, teams, rivalries, games and events that transformed the sports landscape from 1979 to 2009.
Considering how heavily the 2004 ALCS was covered, I'd say it falls under this description.

It's completely out of line with the other documentaries they've done. Something more appropriate would be something like how the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry changed baseball. Of course then they couldn't focus exclusively on the 2004 ALCS.

the night the Red Sox won the world series was the moment they stopped being forever the Yankees' bitch, and actually grew up as a franchise and into a legitimate Yankee rival. there was a huge part of me that said 'it's about f...ng time' when they won it.

They became a legitimate Major League Baseball team when they won. The Yankees have no worthy rival.

If you've listened to all of the 30 for 30 podcasts, as well as Simmons own podcast leading up to the series, he made it clear that it was about unique issues and different angles. He couldn't have been more demonstrative that this series was not meant to be about the most famous teams and/or athletes in general, and when those subjects were broached they'd be tackled from a creative viewpoint and usually involve those teams/players that were well in the past and kind of forgotten now (like the Gretzky one, but even that was more about the mechanics of a mega deal and the relatively groundbreaking experience of bring hockey to SoCal).

He's mentioned many time that they rejected ideas because they were on subjects that were too popular or that everyone had already wrung dry.

It will be interesting to see how this subject is approached. I hope we see something new here, rather than just a piece that Simmons can pop into the DVD player and pass out to when he comes home drunk from a Hollywood party.

Haha. I could edit but I think I'll just leave as is.

Edit for another reason: Didn't mean to insult - I've played my fair share in the trainwreck.

Weren't the 2004 Red Sox on the covers of Corriere della Sera and the London Daily Mail? It seemed to be a worldwide story at the time, which Red Sox fans can't seem to let go of.
As far as ESPN being pro-Red Sox, that's a tough sell with their being in Connecticutt, (Yankee country), and all.

They made the cover of TIme Magazine as well.

I kind of agree with Snatch here. I own all the DVDs relating to 2004, a few books, magazines from that time, newspapers, etc.....I just don't see what more there is to learn about it that I didn't already know.

I'm also a big Hurricanes fan and although I really enjoyed "The U", it also covered a lot of familiar territory. With that one though, at least it offered some perspective. Schnellenberger, Johnson, players, etc. were talking today about events that happened 20-30 years ago and maybe had gained some insight over time. Plus, it was just fun to relive some of those things that happened all those years ago.

With the 2004 Red Sox, it's still too fresh. I don't see a lot of room for anything we didn't already know.

On a side note, I finally caught the Ted Williams documentary on HBO last night, but only the second half. It was really good. I've got it set to tape next time it's on.

I thought "The U", the Raiders one w/ Ice T and the Colombian soccer one were all really good. I've watched bits and pieces of others but haven't seen enough to comment on them one way or the other.

I guess the Sox are no longer America's team. Interesting, because these polls always seem so skewed towards the Sox.
If that means I don't have to spend 7 innings sitting next to the pink hat and her really cool friends cell phone conversations, interrupted only by their overbearing discussion of how dreamy they think Jacoby is, it's a good thing.

So does that mean Ellsbury is done for the year? Because otherwise the Sox have a situation where they really don't have an obvious spot (other than the pen) for anyone.

They checked in on Jim Edmonds and apparently he said he wasn't sure he wanted to play for a contender. Yikes

Not a bad move, although I don't think he has any future at catcher. Since he can only flip the ball back to the pitcher, maybe he can play 1B so he can utilize that play for when the pitcher is covering first.

I don't think there was much to be done with the Sox today. They just got Buchholz, Beckett and V-Mart back last week. They might get Ellsbury back this week...and Pedroia in maybe two weeks. Being 6.5 back of the wild card, not sure you can give up a really good propsect for 2 months of Downs.

I like the fact they called up Kalish, the kid has had a really good year in the minors and deserved a shot. Hermida was horrific and cost Beckett two runs with his OF defense in Anaheim. Kalish should be here to stay. Funny, I believe he was a NJ kid who grew up a Yankees fan.

WAY off-topic: there is going to be a sequel to "The U" about the teams the Butch Davis built and then going into the subsequent decline. I doubt it will be part of the 30-for-30 series, but that was probably one of the better rated of the series. Personally, I loved it because I became a 'Canes fan when I went to school there and it gave me a new enjoyment of their history and how much the team really changed college football. Now if only they could get back to the former glory .

Leyland put the winning run on base by IBB with Ortiz coming up to the plate? A night after he lets his closer uncork 50 pitches in a 5 run game? What is he smoking - besides a lot of cigarettes?

Leyland missed the memo that Phil Coke will always give up the big hit to a lefty if he's halfway decent.

I don't think it was a bad move..you had a LH pitcher facing Youkilis with men on 2nd and 3rd...a single ties it. Youkilis is a better hitter than Ortiz anyway, not even factoring the lefty/right matchups. Plus it sets up the DP to end the game.

Also, Ortiz entered the at bat 0-for8 against Coke with 3 K's..Just didn't work out.
