Don't try to play gotcha, Theo. If you haven't figured out the purpose of this forum by now, it's probably never going to happen. No, we don't need Sox fans playing "But what about the Yankees!" and we certainly don't need them reveling in Thurman Munson's death AND playing "But what about the Yankees!"

Thanks for the helpful advice. Given your continued cynical use of Thurman Munson's death to further your completely obvious agenda, I'll give it the weight it deserves.

And the comment was an aside about "Yankee fan on Yankee fan" sniping, not what any Yankee player was doing or not doing.

In any event, Tim Bogar's abominable coaching is what I think bears discussion. And having read Terry Francona's comments about Bogar in today's Globe, I'm less sanguine that the Sox are going to do the right thing. If they are, it's going to have to happen at a level above Tito.

Back to Bogar, I don't care what Rotoworld said but the fact is that Tim Bogar sent two runners into almost certain outs at the plate, which undoubtedly made winning that game much more difficult. Now it's true that if Wake had pitched better and Manny Delcarman not served up two bombs, the Sox would have had a much better chance to win, especially since they scored 8 runs.

But Bogar is beyond awful. He's costing them outs and arguably games and is a constant risk to the players' health. And even when nothing obviously bad happens, it's hard to believe that runners have any confidence in him when they approach third.

The Sox need to replace him. And while it would be unusual in the extreme to do this mid-season, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they did it.
You're being a bit harsh on the guy. Those plays at the plate could have gone one way or the other.

Which is to remind you that we're aware that you reveled in his death? Yes, I would certainly hope I've made that plenty clear.

Well now, after a horrible start to the season, the Sox are only 3.5 games out of first, and only 1.5 behind the Yankees. There's still a ways to go, but they seem to be heading in the right direction. Of course, Lackey, Matsusaka, and Wakefield are still on the team, so if the sox are going to make up any more ground, they are going to have to score A LOT of runs. Not every team they play is going to be as bad as Baltimore.

No, he's not being too harsh. You NEVER send a runner home (especially a gimpy one) with nobody out unless the only way he's out is if he slips and falls. Period. And to do it twice in one game (with good hitters coming up) is simply inexcusable. Inexcusable like Grady Little in 2003 and like Marlon Brando's chauffeur in the Godfather. Some things just shouldn't be forgiven.

The Red Sox now lead the major leagues in runs scored. They are one run ahead of the Yankees, although the Yankees have played one game less.

It shows baseball is impossible to predict. Everyone was concerned with the Red Sox offense at the beginning of the year, and 1/3 of the way through the season they have scored a lot of runs even with 2 starters out for most of the season and Jeremy Hermida, Bill Hall, and Darnell McDonald getting regular at bats, among others.

After 1/3 of the season, the most pleasant surprise for me is Beltre. Seeing this guy play day in and day out, he really has been solid after some early season fielding problems.

Who knows what is to come. I suspect they can't keep up this pace in runs scored, but the starting pitching should get better, especially if Beckett comes back healthy.

Maybe, but a lot of smart folks have spent a lot of time using facts to determine likely outcomes that help understand what has happened and what most probably might in the future.

A lot of smart folks seem to yearn for a day when the Umpires are computers and the players are cyborgs...that way there are no surprises, everything fits neatly into a little box.

Mostly it was the folks that pull stuff out of their a@@ who figured the '10 Red Sox offense would be that much worse than their '09 offense, though.

well wasn't it the Red Sox GM Theo Epstein who coined the term "run prevention" as the Sox strategy for 2010?

On pace for 883 runs, which is 2nd in all of MLB in runs per game.

    I think so.

But that term never meant that the Sox FO thought or was saying that the Sox didn't need to score runs, too. In a division with the Yankees, Rays and Jays, it was always the case that the Sox had to produce at the plate.

In my view, the whole "run prevention" jargon was a just a geeky way of conveying that the 2010 team had to be constructed in a way that was a lot better defensively than it was in 2009.

That's not exactly revolutionary stuff. The 2009 team wasn't all that good at catching the ball and they needed to upgrade in that area. It was just particularly easy to mock when the Sox defense got off to the craptastic start that it did in April and the team was getting swept by bad teams.

I don't think he anticipated the reaction would be similar to what it would be if he'd gone and traded every decent hitter on the team for Adam Everett, Pedro Feliz, and Doug Mientkiewicz.

"Historic depth" was coined by a poster here (a Yankee fan, if I recall right). "Potentially the greatest starting rotation in history" was Ravech.

Or it was the FO's attempt to spin the fact that they didn't re-sign Jason Bay and that there were no other FA available that were considered offensive forces.

I firmly hold that Theo believed in the "bridge year" statement from the get go. He has stated he builds teams to make the playoffs "7 out of 10 times." / lindo.

It was just so wildly unpopular up here that run prevention became the meme to pacify Teh Nation.
The non-statistical portion (majority) of the fanbase didn't buy into it though.

The jury's still out on this team, IMO. I guessed they would win 89-90 games, am I'm going to stick with that. Yankee fans got lulled into believing they were done when they were back but they're not going to get that story.

The summer months don't seem to be kind to boston and I think that's when the separation willl occur.

Papelbon was placed on the bereavement/family medical emergency list because of an undisclosed family medical issue, the Sox announced. Manager Terry Francona declined to offer additional information and asked for people to respect Papelbon’s privacy.

Clever theory, but I don't buy it. Theo IS one of those stats guys, and Beltre and Cameron are two of the prime characters that such guys drool over.

I think it's just a case of things not working out in real life just like you planned them on paper.

as of today they're a series out of 2nd place, and have the best record in the majors over the last 45 games(which includes a sweep of Tampa...IN TAMPA). Your comment sounds like something stupid that Gary Thorne said about them a couple weeks ago being "almost in last place) when they were 15 games ahead of the O's.

Wouldn't advise holding your breath waiting for their next slump...

Real mature guys. The new guy asks a couple legitimate questions about team structure, raises an issue about concern of bullpen performances from year to year (check out the stats of the Rays' bullpen in '07 and '08 for edification on that concern), and he's branded a troll?

    Real nice.

Fact: The Red Sox are in 3rd place.

If you want to nit pick, they are closer to being in 4th place than they are of being in 2nd.

Re: Red Sox Thread Version 5.0

    From that guy's past posts:

For the record, I've yet to encounter a Sox fan that wasn't realistic about their team.
    Wow. That's special.

And of course a lot of stuff from May/June 2009 about how terrible the Yankees were, how bad the organization was, how dumb they were for having CC "replace" Moose, and how much better the Red Sox were than them. Surprisingly enough, it looks like he didn't show up much for the second half. Oh, except to say that CC sucked in the postseason.

Yea, he left his taint on the Sabathia off-season thread. You'd figure the attempt at disguising himself as a Yankee fan would be an instant RO, but ScubaSteve has avoided that for years.

Another good one if anyone's interested.

    http://forums.nyyfans.com/showpost.p...postcount=4299

With Teixiera...sure, he's a GG firstbaseman, but he hit 36 home runs and drove in 121 runs last year. Giambi hit 32 and drove in 96...pretty much a wash there.
This guy's post history is like a freaking gold mine. Also, I love people who hated on the CC signing because "it's only because of what he did in the NL Central." Yeah, he never won the American League Cy Young award...

Um, anyway. The Red Sox. They suck.

Wouldn't advise holding your breath waiting for their next slump...
Too bad they still wont make the playoffs

I'm sorry, but that's just a dumb question. How do you trash talk when your team sucks? That's not exactly brain surgery.
