As down as I was on the Yankees bullpen last night, I had a feeling the Yankees would win once Francona took Wakefield out of the game. I thought they'd tie it off Bard, who doesn't scare me at all, but doing it off Papelbon was that much sweeter. (And though he's still an effective closer, he's not even in the top 5 of guys I worry about any more.)

I'm pleasantly surprised that the Yankees won the game last night.
2009 - World Champion New York Yankees!!

There is nothing more pleasant than getting a win off Papelbon. First to tie it with Alex's home run and then the walk-off from Thames. Sweeeeet. It doesn't get much better than that.![]()
Merry f'ing Christmas

This thread is going to be really boring the rest of the year because the Red Sox are no longer our competition for the Division in any way.
Unless there is some way to have Joe Maddon involved in a play at the plate, I don't see how I'm going to be able to get that excited for the Yankees-Rays "rivalry."Originally Posted by jeterdaman

So last night, I was at a fastfood place, and was at the counter ordering my food and quietly watching the end of the sox/yanks game on my iphone with the sound all the way down. I ordered a "3 Cheese Quesadilla" and a burrito, and it came out to $25 because the employee put it down as 3 quesadillas. I point out his mistake, and a second later, see the ball fly into the stands to end the game. I let out a quit "sonofabitch!" I looked up just in time to see the poor employee (who is obviously in his first shift ever) look at me hopelessly, and apologize for the mistake. I thought about telling him it was the game, but thought it was a little too funny to break the news so soon. Poor guy apologized to me about three times before I left, so I finally told him the truth. Good think he didn't actually make my food, or else I would have been afraid to eat it.
The yankees make me a meaner guy.

From Nathan:
As opposed to Hughes, who the Sox were destined to beat up? Okay then. Those are dumb choices. Basically it boils down to Matsuzaka and Papelbon both being awful in the same game. If just one of them had been decent, the game would have turned out differently.![]()

I thought they'd get to Bard too, since he has abysmal numbers in the Bronx. But with the heart of the order up against Paps I did not despair.Originally Posted by sweet_lou_14

I don't think it would happen but how great would it be if they finished behind Toronto...especially since they have the Blue Jays number and consistently beat them.Originally Posted by ieddyi

Oh wait...
Yeah, I got nothing.
Yeah, and the game we won wouldn't have been as close if Hughes hadn't had a bad performance. See how that works?Originally Posted by Nathan

I wonder where they plan on trading him to. It's fairly obvious Bard is the better pitcher at this point.

They can't, though, unless they are conceding the race. Their pen is pretty bad outside of those twoOriginally Posted by teknetic

They can't trade him until the 2010 seasons ends. The pen is weak and the combo of Papelbon and Bard are the only two who can get outs consistently. The Yankees have scored 6 runs against him this year, everyone else has 1. His walks are high, but he has only walked one guy in his last nine appearances.Originally Posted by teknetic
Wonder if Tito would ever flip the two, making Bard the closer and Papelbon the 8th inning guy. Not sure it makes that much difference compared to the clubhouse drama that could cause, but I would love to see him try.Originally Posted by teknetic
If the Sox don't improve their level of play in the 1st half, is Francona on the hot seat in the 2nd half? I'm assuming not, but interested in some opinions on it.
Just my two cents, I'd think that Theo would be more on the hot seat than Francona. He can only use the players he's given.Originally Posted by False1
Then there's Farrell. If the pitching continues to stink, he'd better be sitting on a pile of pot holders.
There's no way Francona or Theo get fired this season/after this season.
If by the ASB, they're 10+ games out, I'm not sure what they'll gain by keeping him.Originally Posted by Yankee Fan in Boston

I think this too... except, Tito may have had a hand in selecting some of those players that are now underperforming.Originally Posted by Hildy910

Again, another example of me saying something obviously true and in your haste to argue with every point I make you end up disputing an obviously correct point.Originally Posted by President Kennedy

This is obviously correct, but because Nathan posted it, it becomes fodder for derision ands.

The next week or so for the Sox: tonight @ NYY, 2 vs MIN, 3 @ PHI, 3 @ TB. They could easily find themselves 10 or 11 games back by next weekend.
if Hughes had pitched a no-hitter, the sox would have still lost.Originally Posted by Nathan
