As down as I was on the Yankees bullpen last night, I had a feeling the Yankees would win once Francona took Wakefield out of the game. I thought they'd tie it off Bard, who doesn't scare me at all, but doing it off Papelbon was that much sweeter. (And though he's still an effective closer, he's not even in the top 5 of guys I worry about any more.)

I'm pleasantly surprised that the Yankees won the game last night.

There is nothing more pleasant than getting a win off Papelbon. First to tie it with Alex's home run and then the walk-off from Thames. Sweeeeet. It doesn't get much better than that.

This thread is going to be really boring the rest of the year because the Red Sox are no longer our competition for the Division in any way.

Unless there is some way to have Joe Maddon involved in a play at the plate, I don't see how I'm going to be able to get that excited for the Yankees-Rays "rivalry."

Re: Red Sox Thread Version 5.0

So last night, I was at a fastfood place, and was at the counter ordering my food and quietly watching the end of the sox/yanks game on my iphone with the sound all the way down. I ordered a "3 Cheese Quesadilla" and a burrito, and it came out to $25 because the employee put it down as 3 quesadillas. I point out his mistake, and a second later, see the ball fly into the stands to end the game. I let out a quit "sonofabitch!" I looked up just in time to see the poor employee (who is obviously in his first shift ever) look at me hopelessly, and apologize for the mistake. I thought about telling him it was the game, but thought it was a little too funny to break the news so soon. Poor guy apologized to me about three times before I left, so I finally told him the truth. Good think he didn't actually make my food, or else I would have been afraid to eat it.

The yankees make me a meaner guy.

    From Nathan:

Those are dumb choices. Basically it boils down to Matsuzaka and Papelbon both being awful in the same game. If just one of them had been decent, the game would have turned out differently.
As opposed to Hughes, who the Sox were destined to beat up? Okay then.

I thought they'd get to Bard too, since he has abysmal numbers in the Bronx. But with the heart of the order up against Paps I did not despair.

I don't think it would happen but how great would it be if they finished behind Toronto...especially since they have the Blue Jays number and consistently beat them.

I got nothing, either. The Red Sox pitching staff has just been atrocious. It's hard to believe it's been this bad in every aspect. There have been other disappointments, but where the Red Sox are right now is squarely on the pitchers.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, in Papelbon's last 18 gms vs Yankees, he is 0-5 with a 7.85 ERA.

They can't trade him until the 2010 seasons ends. The pen is weak and the combo of Papelbon and Bard are the only two who can get outs consistently. The Yankees have scored 6 runs against him this year, everyone else has 1. His walks are high, but he has only walked one guy in his last nine appearances.

Wonder if Tito would ever flip the two, making Bard the closer and Papelbon the 8th inning guy. Not sure it makes that much difference compared to the clubhouse drama that could cause, but I would love to see him try.

If the Sox don't improve their level of play in the 1st half, is Francona on the hot seat in the 2nd half? I'm assuming not, but interested in some opinions on it.

Just my two cents, I'd think that Theo would be more on the hot seat than Francona. He can only use the players he's given.
Then there's Farrell. If the pitching continues to stink, he'd better be sitting on a pile of pot holders.

If Matsuzaka and Papelbon had pitched well, the Red Sox most likely would have won. In fact, if Matsuzaka had pitched well, Papelbon probably wouldn't have pitched at all and Ramon Ramirez or whomever would have been in there in the 9th.

This is obviously correct, but because Nathan posted it, it becomes fodder for derision and s.

The next week or so for the Sox: tonight @ NYY, 2 vs MIN, 3 @ PHI, 3 @ TB. They could easily find themselves 10 or 11 games back by next weekend.
