Casey, I apologize for the board's sarcasm meter being broken. I will PM a mod to get it fixed.

Where does one buy these sarcasm meters or detectors that always seemed to be mentioned on this board?

Not sure where you got those numbers from because you're wrong. HIs April OPS was .916 but his May was .658 and so far in June it is .694. For the season his OPS is .756.

Unhappy to get the L of course, but happy to see Masterson pitch a great game. Pretty much everyone who has come in contact with the guy say what a great guy he is. Hope he continues to do well - but I think he's destined for long relief.

Couldn't find the plate- not even close- and loaded the bases

He says he had to get ready quickly (due to Beltre's HR) and that forced him to rush during the first few AB's...

Out in the bullpen, Bard raced to get ready. He had been told to take what time he needed, the Sox would stall. They would have sent Ramon Ramirez back out to the mound before making the switch. Bard, though, said he felt good to go.

“I got ready a little quick and I think I just carried that into those first couple hitters and was rushing myself a little bit,’’ Bard said. “Got myself into it, and almost got out, but didn’t.

“I was loose. It was just kind of the mind was racing a little bit, which happens from time to time. It took me a couple batters to slow it down, I think.’’

If that's the case, it's on Francona. He's gotta have him up to start the top of the 9th, getting loose.

    Not really.
When you're a closer and your team is behind by one run with one inning to go, you should be preparing to go into the game by anticipating that the lead will change.

He said his mind was racing because he was rushing to get ready. But he also said his arm was loose and ready to go.

Preparing mentally is a huge factor for a closer.

Yeah. It's not like the Red Sox made some miracle comeback. They were only down one run.

However, if Bard is going to be the closer of the future (which I'm not sure if he is or he isn't) then he better get himself mentally together more quickly. These kinds of things happen from time to time with closers.

I agree - it seems like he hasn't gotten himself in a closer mindset at all. Probably because he's just the fill-in closer right now, but still he should have been mentally prepared.

I think the Red Sox get a little too wishy-washy about it, though, with Papelbon, too. Papelbon would have been throwing earlier, except when they're sort of maybe "trying to stay away from him" and he probably has the same problem when they do it to him, too.

Kind of a chicken egg thing i guess. If Francona had him up sooner, he might have been able to calm his mind down and not "rush" to get ready.
I still maintain that he should have been getting loose at the beginning of the inning

    I fully disagree.
I won't want my closer warming when the team is behind.

Allow me to fill you in. They lost when Bard loaded the bases and gave the game away with 2 outs to the Indians in a walk off win.
