Cost getting to the Stadium from Central NJ

The cost for 2 one way tickets from MetroPark is now $20 ($10 each eay) and $22 from Metuchen and $26 from New Brunswick.

Add in the cost to park of about $5 to park and another $2.25 on the subway each to the stadium and your are looking at about $50 just to get to the stadium for 2 people and almost $30 if you go solo. If you go from Metuchen on Sunday parking is free for now.

The good news is if you have some time you can save a few bucks $3 to $5 per person or so by ONLY taking the NJtransit train to Newark and get off there then hop on the PATH train to NYC and picking up the subway at WTC or at Herald square..

Man is it getting expensive just to get to a game. It looks like a few less trips to the stadium for me this season. Down down from about 8 or 9 to 5 or 6. The cost of tickets isn't the problem, for just about any game you canget a ticket for less than $40 and $20 if you don't care where to sit. As for the good games against the RED SOX or a pitcher of note if you are willing to spend $50 you get in 9 out of 10 times if your not picky.

Anbody have any tips on how to save a few bucks on getting to the stadium?

I don't need tickets I planed on the cost of those. It's the train fare that is taking its toll on my pocket. Just another reason why there is a glut of tickets on the market this season.

Carpool? Maybe someone is heading there and you can share the expense. Or you could buy good walking shoes... Or work on that hitchhiking technique!

For the last 10 years or so I have been taking the train in from Hamilton on the NE corridor for Saturday games.

Before the fare increase an off-peak round trip was $20.50 - $41 for two of us. But they not only raised the fare but got rid of the off-peak tickets to boot. So now I need to buy 4 one-ways at $15/per - or $60!! The increase alone almost pays for parking by the Stadium . .

. . . so I will be driving to games once again. Sad but true.

There is no good way to get to Yankee Stadium from Central NJ.

Every option is both time consuming and expensive.

My wife and I moved from Brooklyn to Cranford, NJ in September, and using the bus (tried the train twice), I went to about five/six games—and what a pain in the asssss!!! The worst was having to "watch the clock" to make sure I didn't miss the last one home. Horrible! (I'd never consider driving/parking—not my idea of fun. I like my before and during a game.)

My solution for this season: I got tix for 10 day games and three Saturday games. (I can leave work whenever I want.) And my 50" plasma HD in the family room serves as a fine surrogate!

It does cost so much to get there. This year I probably won't go to nearly as many games as I usually go to.

It's very painful to get to the Bronx from Central NJ. Usually my Dad and I drive, but occasionally I take the train if I'm going with someone else etc. The NJ Transit/subway combo is time consuming though, but I really should do it more (since I have access to free tickets). It's just too annoying with all the changing of trains etc. I envy the Metro-North riders for having a stop at YS now....

I was going to ask if you have ever taken the ferry from Weehawken/Hoboken? I like to do that a few times a year....but I don't think it would save you much $.

I drive from Hillsborough, NJ (near Princeton/Bridgewater) for every Saturday game. The fastest we have made it in has been 1 hour and 10 or 15 minutes. Usually, it takes about 1 hr and 30 minutes from the driveway to the River Ave. parking garage if we leave between 10:15 and 10:30. Even with traffic, the train is a pain and time consuming (I took the train for 15 years from Somerville, NJ into Penn Station NY for work)...10-15 minutes to the train station, 1 hr 15 minutes to NY Penn, then the subway up to the Bronx.

What about driving to Jersey City, finding free (or cheap, maybe at the Mall?) parking and taking the Path/Subway?

Obviously you have to pay for tolls on the turnpike but then you're down to $2 for the Path and $2.25 for the Subway = $17 total for two people or $8.50pp.

You do not need to take a subway anymore, at least to the game- the water taxi is free from Wall Street..

This is not a bad option. I haven't done it this way in awhile but I do remember parking at Journal Square in Jersey City being pretty cheap. You can hop on the path there. You can actually take the path to the World Trade Center and walk to Pier 11 and take the Water Taxi for free. If you reserve a spot online it will only cost you a buck. Apparently Delta Airlines is sponsoring this as some sort of promotion.

As for me I drive in from Ocean County NJ. I provide the ticket and whoever is going with me picks up the tolls, bridge and parking costs. Sometimes we get adventurous and look for a free spot in the street. I've got short cuts through Manhatten for when getting to the Deegan is backed up and an excellent exit strategy that has me going across the 145th Bridge across Manhatten to Riverside Dr and pick up the GW from there for the way home. The key for me is to get in early and either tailgate, go to the Court Deli or Molino Rojo. This defrays the cost of the astronomically priced food and beer. I never leave the game early because my exit strategy gets me home in under an hour and forty-five minutes every time.

We live outside New Brunswick and switched to driving it. The train was nice, but ended up being 2 hours door to door and then the cost for two of us. We now pay for parking and tolls.

Ride there on a motorcycle! Park it for free on the street, and have fun riding there and back, no beers though!

Drive to the Secaucus Junction Park & Ride. $5 after 4pm weekdays to park. $5 on weekends to park. One-Way ticket to NY Penn = $4. Subway to / from the Bronx.

    Total Cost: =
NJTP Toll (can vary if you are clever)
    + $4 to park
+ $8 RT on NJT to NY Penn
+ 3.90 RT on Subway (incl. discount when you spend at least $10 on MetroCard)

Say, maybe $20 RT considering tolls on the NJTP?

Anyone every try catching a bus in Ft Lee to the GWB Bus Station and take the A down to 145 for an uptown Concourse train?

Yes, I have done that. Not bad.

I also just started taking the bus to the GWB Bus Station, then I go outside (Fort Washington & 178th) and take the local bus (BX13) RIGHT to the stadium!

That's a great idea. Not only is it cheaper, but it avoids the worst of the traffic and parking!

A similar option is the Secaucus park and ride off of Route 3; bus into the Port Authority . . .

I've been giving trying this option out. It sounds really good. What is the approxiamate travel time once you get on the train, get to the Subway and ultimately arrive at the Stadium?

Don't envy us Connecticut Metro North riders that much. If I take the train from New Haven (I live near Hartford) I have to pay $10-12 to park at the New Haven station. The round trip fare to Yankee Stadium is $29.50 (and it's going up on June 1st). And the train doesn't always go directly to YS (depends on day and time of game). That means you have to change trains at 125th St to get to the YS station.

I only take the train if I'm going to the game alone. Once two or more people are going, the train becomes far more expensive than driving.

Wouldn't be nice if there was some type "green" discount for taking the train/bus/subway route to cut down on one caarbon footprint.

The Yankees could get some good PR and train would increase there ridership since the recent increase seems to be making easier to use a car in place on mass transit for trip to the stadium.

Secaucus to Penn is at worst 20 minutes - more like 15.

Say 10 minutes to change to Subway at NY Penn.

Add another 10 minutes to possibly wait for a train.

30-40 minutes to the Stadium (either the 2 to the 4 -- not recommended close to first pitch, as you'll never get on the 4 at 149th St), or the A to the B/D (whatever is local at that time).

You can probably do it in about an hour, if things break your way. I'd budget an hour and a half, and that is being conservative. So, you'd want to be on the platform at Secaucus at 5:30 for a 7pm game. On the weekends? Just make sure that you have at least 1.5 hours before first pitch for whatever train you plan to be on. i.e - an 11am train is good. a 12pm train is bad (for a 1pm start). 1130am? Probably ideal.

On an aside, if you are leaving the Stadium heading for Penn Station after a night game, don't bother waiting for an CPW Express train (it only saves five minutes between 125th and 59th St), and NEVER change at 59th St for an A/C UNLESS an A/C rain is waiting across the platform. Stay on the B/D, get off at 34th St, and walk the one block to Penn. It's not worth waiting the 15 minutes for a 8th Avenue train. However, if you are on a downtown B train, and an A train is waiting across the platform at 125th St, YES, change trains if you are going to Penn.

    Cheers!

Wow! I feel very lucky with my options up here in westchester. Drive (doesnt happen anymore), drive to the woodlawn station in the bronx, park for free and take the 4 train, or walk 10 minutes to the metro north station by me and head right on down.

The metro north doesnt always go direct but its as simple as getting off at the 125th st. station and transfering over, it only adds like 3 minutes to the commute. Simple but the price is a bit crazy! Working in the city I have my monthly so it cost me nothing, only have to pay for my wife or whoever goes with me takes care of their fee.

Thanks for the detailed reply! It is certainly appreciated. I'll give it a shot at some point this year.

Metuchen and New Brunswick are NOT Central Jersey.
I consider Central Jersey to start AFTER the GS intersects the NJTP.
