I would say he's the funniest actor currently in Hollywood and probably the only reason to continue watching the Office. (After Jim and Pam got married and had a kid, they're really running out of steam.) Also, Dan in Real Life is a really good movie. It's like his Stranger than Fiction if you want to make the comparison to his Anchorman castmate, Will Ferrell.

But based on the posts above, I guess a bunch of you don't like him.

When I look at him I'm reminded of Mad Dog Russo which isn't a good thing.

My wife watches The Office religiously (both the British and US version) but it doesn't do much for me.

Re: JDPNYY's Celebrity of the Day - Thursday 4/29/10

I don't live far from Scranton Pennsylvania (the backdrop for the tv show "The Office") and periodically, members of the cast will do appearances/signings etc. Even though the show is filmed in Los Angeles, for authenticity, they use the names of actual Scranton businesses and attractions, and both the cast and crew like to pay homage to the city itself. All of the cast and crew that is, except for Steve Carell.

Carell's comment the last time the Scranton Chamber of Commerce asked him why he didn't make the annual trip to Pennsylvania, "My going rate is $50,000 per appearance. Any problem with that, call my agent."

Having said that, Carell is a unilateral character- he really only plays the "dopey lovable loser" with any success...but boy does he play it well. The show is hysterical and the movie "The 40 Year Old Virgin" served as a launching point for a couple comedic actors, Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd, both of whom were doing movies prior to "Virgin," but that was truly a launching point for their career, and they in large part have Carell's insistance on their inclusion in the movie to thank for it.

Well, the show has been on for what 7 seasons now? Maybe they should just end it. Though, The Office is actually the perfect type of show where someone new could just slide into the boss role, like real life.

My wife and I were talking about this the other day, it is pretty remarkable how many of The Office castmembers have respectable to big time movie careers:

    Steve Carrell
    Jon Krasinski
    Ed Helms
    Rainn Wilson
    Jenna Fischer
    BJ Novak
    Craig Robinson

I would think they would all want to be moving on to fulltime movie careers.

Yeah, Ed Helms and Carrell are really the only ones you could say have a big time movie careers and they both came from The Daily Show.

This one took a bit of research but I have it down to two steps of separation -

Steve Carell was in Anchoman with Fred Willard. Fred Willard was in National Lampoon's Movie Madness with Elisha Cook, Jr.

No? They have all had starring roles either in smaller films, are smaller roles in big films. Either way, that is a lot of people on one TV show that are getting gigs in feature films at the same time.

I can't think of another TV comedy that can make the same claim.

Not trying to nit-pick...but I think this is season 6... and unfortunately, even though I find him to be the funniest character on the show, Jon Krasinski's movie career thus far has been largely a disappointment... License to Wed was atrocious and Leatherheads was probably the worst movie George Clooney ever made.

All solid contributions, but I still by my original statement.

    Leatherheads was God awful.

Maybe my problem was I had such high expectations for it, but not only was it a poorly done movie, it wasn't funny at all.

Yeah, the most I've seen him stretch was probably in Little Miss Sunshine, where he was less lovable and more of a loser. Still not far from his usual character, though.

Having said that, I don't get the negativity towards him. As you say, he does his one thing very well. I thought the scene where he's spouting gibberish was the funniest thing in Bruce Almighty, and I thoroughly enjoyed The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Every time I see anyone use "having said that" I immediately think of that Larry David rant in Curb Your Enthusiasm about using that phrase. But having said that... carry on.

I am not sure what it is about that show. Other people with whom I share very similar tastes in humor like the show. I have watched, I'd say, eight episodes, clean through, and I just cannot warm up to it, at all. There are funny bits, but not enough to bring me back very often. Carrell is a quirky cat with the right material, and does have an expressive face (be a good mime), but not all THAT funny, at least to me.

Re: JDPNYY's Celebrity of the Day - Thursday 4/29/10

For anyone that's unfamiliar with "The Office," you may be familar with the whole "that's what she said..." game, following anything with even the vaguest of sexual innuendo with the aforementioned phrase.

Obviously, "Michael Scott" from "The Office" wasn't the first one in the history of the world (or tv/movies etc.) to coin the phrase, but they are in large part responsible for people aged 13-25 thinking LONG and HARD about what they say.

Re: JDPNYY's Celebrity of the Day - Thursday 4/29/10

One other side note on "The Office..." if Carell were to leave, I'm not convinved the show would tank. Obviously, he's the focal point of the plot lines, and whenever a show loses its main character, there's a great chance it goes into the can (look at what happened to "The OC" when it lost its "chief actress, Mischa Barton) but Ed Helms is really, really funny. To me, any scene with him and John Krasinski is phenomenal. The various sub-plots that surround his anger issues, awkwardness in relationships, and pretty much anything involving his allegiance towards Brown are HYSTERICAL.

Alex likes both but told me the British was better...I've always been a big fan of the American version, so we bought the British version to watch and I have to say - we had a lot going on at the time, but we didn't even get through one episode - i was having trouble understanding them -- I'm sure if I stayed with it, I'd probably get used to it.

I love Ricky Gervais (sp?) on everything and usually don't have a problem understanding him but a lot of the tones are hushed and there are phrases, etc that you're trying to decipher and it's moved onto another scene...we should probably try it again though.

You know, I've liked it OK when I've watched...but somehow I never got sucked into it? Maybe I will give it another chance.

Same here although I did see Anchorman and he was OK in a bit part.

I do like the UK version better. There are a few jokes I don't get, but even so, it's better.

David Brent is much more cringe inducing than Michael Scott, but I like the supporting cast on the US version much better.
