Then don't join the discussion. This thread is about the Cy Young race. The entire point of the thread is to discuss who might win the Cy Young. It's incredibly obvious to everyone that the award is not decided at this point. We don't need you to come in and tell everyone that they shouldn't guess at who might win because they could end up being wrong.Originally Posted by NYYDragoon

I'm going to go with Cliff Lee for my first half AL Cy; that K/BB ratio has me mesmerized. Not to mention all the complete games he's thrown.

On a positive note, I am glad to hear that your cat is well-hydrated. That can be a real concern in this heat.Originally Posted by I'm A Wenner!

for the NL its hands down Jimenez unless he ends up on the DL.
for the AL its between Lee, Lester, Price, Buchholz and Pettitte with a long shot.
I'd love Hughes to get it but realistically with the innings limits he wont have as many starts as the others.
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes
CC is often dominant in the second half -- I wouldn't count him outOriginally Posted by BronxYanks45

I want Lester and Price to tank during the second half (whatever is bad for the Sox and Rays is good for the Yanks) and Lee to get traded to the NL so Andy has a shot.

For the NL Wainwright makes the thing interesting. Right now he has a better ERA, WHIP, more SO and higher IP than Jimenez.Originally Posted by BronxYanks45

Agreed, I wouldn't be too surprised if CC won it. He's got the name recognition, he's on the Yankees - giving him a lot of wins (those guys love wins), and he's known for his second half.Originally Posted by Yankee Fan in Boston

AL
CC: 13-3, 144.1 IP, 3,18 ERA, 119 SO, 1.219 WHIP
Buchholz: 10-5, 96 IP, 2.81 ERA, 66 SO, 1.292 WHIP
Lester: 11-4, 128 IP, 2.81 ERA, 130 SO, 1.117 WHIP
Lee: 9-4, 130 IP, 2.56 ERA, 101 SO, 0.915 WHIP
Price:12-5, 120.1 IP, 2.84 ERA, 103 SO, 1.238 WHIP
Weaver: 9-6, 134 IP, 3.22 ERA, 147 SO, 1.090 WHIP
NL
Halladay: 11-8, 162 IP, 2.28 ERA, 140 SO, 1.043 WHIP
Johnson: 10-3, 134.1 IP, 1.61 ERA, 141 SO, 0.968 WHIP
Wainwright: 14-5, 148.1 IP, 1.94 ERA, 136 SO, 1.004 WHIP
Jimenez: 15-1, 132.1 IP, 2.38 ERA, 118 SO, 1.073 WHIP

At http://espn.go.com/mlb/features/cyyoung the Yankees have Sabathia first and Pettitte second in the AL Cy Young Predictor. The fact that Sabathia (119.3 points, 3.18 ERA) is ahead of Josh Johnson (117.9 points, 1.61 ERA) despite Johnson's ERA being about half of Sabathia's shows the formula is flawed.

Likes the Yankees.

in the AL with Hughes on limits and Pettitte out for a while I think its a race between CC, Price, Lester, and Lee

The Cy Young race has just shown that how long the baseball season is. A month ago people still said that Jimenez is a lock. Now he shouldn't even be in the top 3 voting.
The formula isn't flawed. Candidates get bonus points if their team is in 1st place because traditionally, CY young winners were more likely to come from division leaders, independent of their stats.Originally Posted by EvanJ

That's a bit of an exaggeration. I can't see how he would literally be 4th in balloting right now, not with the 15-1 record and the no hitter.Originally Posted by kan_t

Now he is 15-2 and he keeps falling. Right now his ERA, WHIP, K, IP are ALL worse than Halladay, Johnson and Wainwright. Those 3 beat him in all four important Cy Young stats. And it's not like he is running away in win total. Wainwright is only one win behind.Originally Posted by armstrong

I wish the SP in the AL (except for CC) would regress just enough such that Mo starts getting some consideration.

A closer should never win the Cy Young. If any closer was good enough to be awarded the Cy Young they would not be pitching one inning.
I don't see any argument you can possibly give me for you selecting Halladay over Wainright. You're basically saying that the 9 more innings Roy pitched make up for his deficit in wins, k:9, WHIP and ERA.Originally Posted by awy

I'd be shocked if Lee doesn't win it
If they ask who was our star, give them twenty five names, and if you forget our names, just tell them we were Yankees.
It annoys me beyond belief that Carl Pavano is deservedly on that list.

At the moment I'd say Wainwright has the edge, but it's hard to argue against Halladay or Hudson either. I think Johnson and Jimenez are behind, but just a month ago they looked like the clear cut favorites. So things can change.
A quick glance at the numbers above tell me that Lee is killin' it this year.Originally Posted by blumj
