I believe his name is Jarrod Washtup now.
If I had 3 wishes... One of my wishes would be to make a select few of you Pirates Fans.
I know his FIP was around career average, but imagine you put up a 3.78 ERA entering your FA yr? I bet you'd be thinking good things were coming...
I still can't believe Kenny Lofton couldn't get a job either, after going .296/.367 with 23 SB.
And Dye would be a huge upgrade against lefties over Thames...
"First batter up well here's the pitch: it's a curve. Second batter up because the first got served"
I figure the Mariners will sign him as soon as they realize that Snell/Fister/Rowland-Smith/Vargas isn't the greatest 3-5 of a rotation.
^and still had the best yr of his career.

Being unemployed seems to be of their own making. Crap like refusing offers usually will get you unemployed. Other crap like "not willing to work for x dollars" will also get you unemployed.
This. Somehow it's hard to believe someone when he says "It's not about the money" as he overstates his worth and turns down various offers.Originally Posted by ober0n98

Washburn doesn't have a job because he's black, according to Orlando Hudson:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5084621
Washburn turned down offers from the Royals, Brewers and Mariners
Dye turned down $2-3 million from the Nationals -- alleging that such a small offer wouldn't even pay for his moving expenses
Lofton turned down $3-4 million from the Rays in 2008

Who could blame him, when you have $75 million in lifetime earnings, why take 2-3 and uproot your whole life to play for a team that's going to lose 100 games?
The Nats offered $2-3 for that garbage player who would either be a pinch hitter or do significant damage to his team with is poor defensive play and hitting.Originally Posted by Mark19

i beliece rob neyers blog had some numbers of the average salary per war by ethnicity... Blacks had somethin like 3.2 mm perwar and hispanics had 2.7 per war. But the main thing was that the difference wasnt statistically significant.Originally Posted by NYYDragoon

One last thing: being an employer, i HATE employees that complain about everything. You put up with it to some extent if they produce, but when they are average then you toss their ass to the curb. I dont take crap from my employees.
And I hate employers who complain. You're already in the position of power. People work because they have to, not because they want to. Individuals with authority historically concentrated the means to sustenance and self-sufficiency (land) by violent means, and then "allowed" workers to make money for them. Please save me the Americana anti-unionism nonsense.Originally Posted by ober0n98

One year after a black guy got the biggest ever contract for a pitcher, racism is why no-glove malcontents like Sheffield and Dye can't find a team willing to pay above-market rates for themOriginally Posted by THEBOSS84

I think JP Riccardi brought up a good point last night on Baseball Tonight, and I believe him: the MLB isn't looking at race, they are looking at the talent that's out there right now, regardless if youre black, white, hispanic, asian, etc. It just so happens that there may not be as much black talent in baseball out there as there was in the past. That being said, it's probably up to baseball to do something about this.
Javy Vazquez's 2010 non-Cy Young season: 4-10, 7.15 ERA, 140 Ks, 170 IP.

Personally I could care less, I just want to see the best talent on the field, regardless of what race they are, but if they are gonna bitch about it (which the MLB is) then they should do something about it. If not, shut up about it.Originally Posted by THEBOSS84

Its reverse racism. If we started a rally for more white people in the NBA, we would be called racist. If we started a Caucasian College Fund for white people, we would be called racist. If there is an African-American College Fund, why not Caucasian Fund? There are plenty of poor white people. This is the society we live in with the double standard-white people can't do things to support their race without being racist, while black people are praised to help black people.Originally Posted by THEBOSS84

Isn't Washburn known to be a West Coast kind of guy? Maybe he feels the same way about the Mets that Dye does about the Nationals.

Really? I don't think so. If Andy Pettitte comes out and says whites aren't getting paid enough or the black players are getting paid too much it would lead Sportscenter.Originally Posted by NYYDragoon

The percent of black and white American players in MLB are of similar proportion to the percent of blacks and whites in the USA. In fact the proportion of blacks in MLB is slightly higher than whites (.822 v. .8).
I guess it wouldn't be as powerful a message if people were to say there aren't enough Americans in MLB.
Blacks 10.2% of MLB players; 12.4% of the US population
Whites 60% of MLB players; 75% of the US population
Diplomacy is the ability to tell a man to go to hell so that he looks forward to making the trip
An ump is completely put of line by calling out two of the game's top franchises, and Bud stays silent. But a player makes a controversial comment that has NO impact on the game and Mr. Commish is quick to the phone. Cool priorities, man.Commissioner Bud Selig called Twins second baseman Orlando Hudson on Wednesday, one day after Hudson made national news for his views on the lack of African-Americans playing baseball.
Hudson said they did not discuss the comments he's made this week, but the two are expected to get together in June, during the Twins' trip to Milwaukee, where Selig spends most of his time.
[...]
But Selig's phone call had to be more than a coincidence after Hudson implied that racism has played a role in free agent Jermaine Dye remaining unsigned. Hudson also said Robinson "would turn over in his grave to see the lack of African-Americans playing ball.''

Hudson called into question the integrity of the league that Bud Selig runs. West called out two teams for playing slow - whether or not that means he can call a fair game is questionable. If the MLB thought that meant West couldn't call a fair game, we both know he'd be out of a job by now.Originally Posted by NYYDragoon

Haha, is that all? Funny how when race comes up everything else pales in comparison. You're telling me that renegade umps don't call into question the integrity of the league?Originally Posted by THEBOSS84

I have to go with Dragoon on this one. Hudson's comments were really problematic for MLB, no doubt, but West's comments have the potential to damage the credibility of the game on the field. If West makes some bad calls against the Yankees or Sox in the late innings of a close game, don't you think people might question his bias? Even if it's not conscious, we all know that it is there now. In some ways, it's even worse that he only called out the two franchises.Originally Posted by THEBOSS84
And just because they didn't discipline him doesn't mean he can be trusted. I mean, it's not like Bud can just fire a guy -- MLB doesn't do well with unions. And their record on steroids doesn't give me confidence in Bud as a guy that will take bold, decisive action....

I'm surprised someone offered Dye a guaranteed money contract for $2-3 million. I'm even more shocked he said no.
So I heard Jarrod Washburn still doesn't have a job.
