Tino in the booth. Ugh!

I love Tino, but my God is he BAD in the booth. If he talked any faster, I wouldn't understand a word he said. As it is, it takes me a second or two to process what just sped out of his mouth, Evelyn Wood style. I was going to start a "Tino Said What?" thread, but I can't understand what he's saying enough to comment on it. Maybe it can be a literal "Tino Said What?" thread and we can come here to translate his super-fast speaking style.

I like Paulie, so I'm really torn this series. Turn on John and Suzyn and miss Paulie, or leave on Paulie and put up with Tino.

If this YES gig doesn't work out, Tino could be one of those speed readers for the fine print in commercials.

A few years ago, a retired player became a Yankee announcer. At the start, he was unbearable, slow, agonizing. Pretty soon he got into a rhythm & became one of my favorite announcers of all time: Bill White. So give Bam-tino some space to come into his own.

Sorry but I could not disagree more...
I've worked in network television for 30 years. I pretty much get it when it doesn't work--and I get too that you cannot please everyone all of the time. Fair enough. But right out of the box tonight Pauli and Tino went back and forth as though they were sitting in the dugout looking out at the game and chewing the fat. Nothing canned. Everything genuine. Michael Kay, who is great but hasn't played a pro game in his life which is why he's play-by-play, was almost an afterthought. These guys are good. As for Tino speaking quickly...maybe some older viewers might not be able to keep up, but in time they'll figure it out. I kept thinking the entire game that Kay was smiling and so happy to let a couple of pros give us the inside, relatively uncensored scoop, and all the while thanking God that he no longer has to partner with John Sterling....

Ordinarily we end up with O'Neill and Kay going back and forth, and that's painful. I especially love hearing Paulie complain about things he has to pay for now that he's not a player anymore.

While I have nowhere you're experience in TV, I have been in the industry for a few years, and radio a few years before that. I may not "know what works" but I can tell when something won't work with everyone.

Tino speaks too fast for your average viewer Yankee viewer. I'm 25, I speak fast as hell, and there were times I thought he was going too fast. Your average consistent Yankee viewer is what probably somewhere between 35-45, when your hearing starts to suffer.

I am in that age group and I can tell you, for me, it has nothing to do with my hearing which is just fine, thank you. In fact, it was just tested at work the other day.

It has to do with having to process what he's saying because his speaking style is so fast. One, it comes at you at about 200 words per minute (normal speaking rate is about 120 words per minute). Two, most is it isn't clear because it's all jumbled together.

Yes, if he learns to slow down, he'll be more tolerable. But for now, ugh.

I'm 47 yrs old and deaf in my left ear. I understood Tino just fine and enjoyed the broadcast. I love getting the perspective of former players, particularly from those not too far removed from the game and especially from those that actually played with several guys still on the field. While Tino is obviously inexperienced, I enjoyed him doing the game.

As much as I love Tino, I was a little nervous to hear him doing the ST game. He wasn't as bad as I thought and I thought he was better last night paired with Paulie in addition to Kay.

I'm not a fan of Tino's voice/speaking style - it's way too fast and he usually sounds like he has a cold but the content was pretty good last night.

I still say on YES' worst day, their broadcasts are still head and shoulders above the other broadcasts. Remy and Orsillo are second but after them, the rest are usually too homerish or too sleepy.

As long as they don't try to have him to play-by-play like they did with Flaherty. That was pretty awful. Tino may not have the best voice for the booth, but I'm always up for having one of our guys on as an analyst. As good as Cone was, I didn't love his voice either. Nice to see Paulie work for a change, too. Usually he doesn't show up until May.

Let's face it Yankee fans, as much as we love and admire both Tino and Paul does anyone think that they would be broadcasters with out their previous fame with NY. As I said, they were great yankees, but I wonder how affective they'll be over a long season in the booth. I did like Cone and couldn't understand why he is gone but most former ball players have some difficulty becoming broadcasters. I hope I'm proven wrong and that they improve with time.

Since I am usually stuck with Miller and Morgan or Buck and McCarver doing the games, most anyone would be acceptable to me. When I found out I have a free preview of the YES broadcast on DirecTv, I switched immediately from ESPN broadcast to the YES feed. I enjoyed listening to Tino and Paulie, or O'Neil as Tino calls him, and I wish I could afford MLB Extra Innings so I could watch more of the games. For now I'll enjoy anyone they put in the YES booth!

I was very excited to hear Tino and Paulie Friday night. And not because I am a fan, but I thought Tino was very much improved since his stint at ESPN a few years back. He seemed very awkward and uncomfortable at the time. I thought he did really well and I really enjoyed the back and forth between the Tino and Paulie, former players and friends. You are missing the point if you can't appreciate the stories and point of view of these two together. Tino may talk fast, but he will only get better with more practice.

I like Leiter and can tolerate Flaherty. I liked Cone but YES doesn't like announcers that say anything remotely critical. The rest of the announcers are unmanageable.

He's horrible in the booth. He was horrible on BBTN. He's a mix between nervousness & mechanical. You can tell he's clearly trying to think while he's speaking and it doesn't come across right. Fernando Vina & Eduardo Perez are the same way. Perez has gotten better over the past 2 years, maybe due to getting more experience.

Orestes Destrades was a natural. I don't find him particularly entertaining, but he speaks very well. Nomar sounded good. Winfield did not.

It's a crapshoot with these ex-players. David Cone & Al Leiter have made the transfer fine. I wonder if there is a higher success rate for pitchers compared to others--that's the perception I have anyways.

Tino knows his stuff for sure and the back & forth with Paul is excellent. The problem is his radio voice is terrible, just really really awful. Time will tell if people can get used to it. Everyone loves Steve Sommers so there's hope for Tino

I didn't hear Tino this weekend. I was away... but I heard him in the last Spring Training Game he did and if he showed that he knows his stuff, he's come a long way in a short time. He didn't know what he was talking about in that Spring Game. I recall Singleton correcting him more than several times.
